Bluegrass BBQ - Reading
For lunch & dinner we serve our smoked meats, all cooked the true American way which means our BBQ pitmasters work around the clock to ensure the 'cue we serve when our doors open is the best you will find - it takes nearly 48 hours of loving care and attention to perfect each of our smoked meat cuts.
For breakfast every weekend from 9am, we serve up freshly made-to-order American pancakes with delicious toppings, as well as fully loaded smoked breakfast plates.

St. Louis Spare Ribs
Thick square-cut St. Louis spare ribs, mopped w. bbq sauce & finished on the chargrill w. fries & slaw
My husband really enjoyed his pit burger however after being told our food would be a bit longer as my plate had been dropped (we had already waited 40 mins) the bbq chicken I eventually got was extremely dry so I was unable to eat it.
Item on menu not on waitresses tablet, couldn't scan ordering QR, only 1 drink arrived after staff got distracted taking orders from other diners, food only lukewarm, poor portion size for a £17 dish.
Food was very dry and needed more drinks to help it down. Can’t believe I’m saying this but the portions were way to big and could of been smaller. Drinks could of come out a lot earlier than they did as it wasn’t busy but got them about 5 mins before the meal. Chairs are very uncomfortable but put up with them. Can’t say I would rush back or recommend it.
Epic pancakes. Though one scoop of ice cream is a bit stingy. Great atmosphere-love the music. Cool decor. Polite and attentive staff.
Pancakes are really nice! Had to order on the app and some ingredients missing off orders and some syrups missing. Not sure if this is because you had to use the app for covid and the kitchen are not checking the comments section when placing the order. As ordering the app, it was also hard to get staffs attention to inform them of things missing from the meal so had to keep getting up and down to asking for missing things. Will try again when normal service resumes as the children loved the pancakes!
Food was dry and flavourless. For what you get it wasn't worth the money. Staff were kind and friendly on the plus side although we were asked to walk to the front of the venue after entering through the back entrance despite no signage
Used to love bluegrass but it's gone down hill. Food was burnt and things missing, coffee was like water and staff were less than helpful. Very disappointing.
Booked for 8.30 arrives, empty restaurant downstairs. Waited til 9.25 to receive food. Asked the young man when the food would be out and he was pretty rude. Food finally arrived, only good thing about the visit. Turns out they were holding a large party celebration upstairs which is clearly why the service was so bad. 9 pm on a friday a half empty restaurant with staff hanging around turning away walk ins seemed alittle strange. Only reason im giving any stars is the food was great.
They've got loads of great reviews, so must be doing something right, but not on our visit.
Almost an hour and a half between ordering our food and receiving it, despite the restaurant seeming to be less than half full.
When it did arrive it was plates of disappointment. Dry pulled pork, hot links with bits of bone in and a burger that was mostly made out of a giant onion ring. The Southern fried boneless wings were so over seasoned it was a struggle to eat more than two without feeling ill.
Very disappointed. There was a lot of food left on our plates
Fortunately the restaurant thought we'd had a bad experience too and refunded all of our meals.
By far the driest burger we have ever eaten, half the ingredients missing, order was wrong and no attention to detail from the servers. A disappointing experience
Very good value for money and great service food very tasty
Fantastic meal out with friends. Highly recommend
Our food arrived almost 1 hour after it was ordered, and even then we were given the wrong food, and one of our party did not receive his food at all. 1.5hours later he got given a stone cold burger, and some “apology chips”, which sadly were also stone cold. When spoken to, staff could only say “there’s a lot going on”….
We ordered a pint, and it turned up flat, but rather than offer another we were told “we’re just changing the barrel so that’s just how it comes”.
The app to order food is outdated and clunky; it glitches, and in short it just doesn’t work.
Sadly, what should have been a good night out, at a favourite restaurant was really quite spoiled.
Could not fault the service and the staff at all. Food was excellent and really good value. The portion sizes are massive. Will be returning and recommending
This was a mixed experience. The service was sometimes friendly and sometimes seemed like the FoH staff were annoyed at us being there.
We had issues with the QR code and it took about ten minutes and us asking the staff for help multiple times before someone took our order. A table opposite us left as there was too much confusion with getting the QR code / app to work. I had been to the same restaurant the week before for breakfast and when we had issues with the QR code, someone was very friendly and proactively took our order. This time, the person that served us seemed reluctant to help and it put a downer on the experience. It was almost like they were annoyed that we were asking for help.
I appreciate that this really isn’t the server’s fault. I imagine the staff are being told that they’re not meant to take orders due to Covid and everything has to be done by the app. But this puts a negative start on the whole experience and it really shouldn’t take that long to order food. We went to Be at One for drinks afterwards and they took our orders at the table and this made the service and experience much more positive. I feel that Bluegrass could take orders from the tablet instead of using QR codes in the same way that other restaurants and bars are as it really isn’t a Covid risk and it’s just making the experience negative for the customers and putting pressure on the staff to deal with unhappy customers.
Furthermore, one of the tables next to us was left uncleaned when we arrived and wasn’t cleaned until another table was taken over to be seated there. The restaurant wasn’t busy and there were plenty of staff so I really feel that standards and service were lacking.
The redeeming factor was the food. The food was absolutely delicious! I had the Mac-Daddy and really enjoyed it.
In the future, I feel that The Powers that Be need to allow “normal” service and not an app, and the staff need to be more attentive towards service and standards.
Ordered chicken wrap, when it arrived no chip as was stated on the menu, asked waitress and replied it doesn’t come with chips so pointed it out on menu and responded, really sorry you are right she then came out with an extra large size with her apologies😃BUT they were not fit for consumption, dark brown, soggy, cold and unappetising. Other order was pulled pork with chips slaw, and chips, oh my god they were having a bad day pork was dry, served in a very small amount not even half a size of my palm of hand, served with chips, slaw which was slices of the core of cabbage some grated carrot BUT no ONION or dressing or mayo . omg what has happened? Comes to side orders also disgusting for the price we pay for 6 corn chips in a dish in soggy cheese that hasn’t even been grilled although lots of chillies, may be they had a laugh when serving these I will not mention the onion rings and grease.
I was disappointed in my visit. The app they use is achingly and frustratingly slow where you can't search properly. If you type too quickly it'll only take a couple of letters. To use it you have to type a letter every 5 secs or more. It doesn't let you jump to whatever category you just have to scroll on and on.The app then demands your number and if you want the receipt you have to sign up to marketing emails.
Noone is there to explain any questions you have with the food which is annoying when they don't have descriptions of something you don't know and they have a quirky name to it.
Went for the ultimate pitstop bundle between myself and my girlfriend and regretted it. I always loved pulled pork for example and its a go to easy to eat but in this meal I barely touched it as it was just dry. The burnt ends were so solid you might chip a tooth and the "slaw" was just some veg with no mayo or anything in it.
Chicken was a dodgy pink colour but the ribs were the only thing they didn't mess up. Chips tasted more like potatos then chips.
Corn on the cob was nice with a good bbq taste to it.
Perhaps if we had gone for just one of the foods they may have been more care in it but here it felt it was all half assed.
Another great meal enjoyed by all . Always look forward to our visit.
Long wait for food. Got food and some things cold. Mac and cheese tasted like rubber
Service was just a tiny bit slow but the food was so fresh and delicious it really didn’t matter.
Burger that was supplied was not what we ordered, they stated it was correct but we had no pull pork and the burger had bacon and cheese…We did not order this.
The food was okay but nothing too great
Ordering on the app was easier second time round. Food and drinks came in good time Sauvignon wine was lovely as was the food. Service was friendly.
Wood definitely eat here again
Very slow to receive both drinks and food. Had to send first lot of pancakes back as they were cold
The app was difficult to negotiate (and my husband is an IT Director!) and we had to wait over an hour for our food. When it arrived, my daughter and I were happy with our choices and enjoyed the meal, but my husband did not get exactly what he had ordered (incorrect sauce and fries). We were so hungry by that point that we didn’t complain. We just ate and went.
The app was long winded but workable.
Unfortunately wasn’t as nice as usual.
Had the meat platter and the coleslaw was completely dry and chicken undercooked. And presentation wasn’t great, just shoved altogether in a round tray
The app is rubbish and the staff don't wear masks correctly or enforce the wearing of masks.
Been before and last time it was much better. This time food was over cooked and a bit dry, menu choosing link we had to use (no waiter) (covid I guess?) was terrible, couldn't find some of the drinks to be able to order them.
Would think twice before going again!
Poor service and mistakes with food. Manageress did little to help.
I was amazed at the amount of food for the deal we had, 3 sides and a choice of meat
Very tasty and good value for money
Bluegrass provides excellent BBQ. I particularly like the baby back ribs and they were exceptional this time - thick, juicy, meaty and perfectly smoked & grilled.
Whilst I don't like the impersonal ordering system using an app, I appreciate that it is necessary in these times and look forward to going back to a more personal system (hopefully, next month).
Amazing food, amazing staff and a really enjoyable evening. Highly recommended 👌
You certainly get enough to eat, but these guys could do with a lunch section on the menu
It was my daughter’s birthday and everyone was looking forward to finally going out. What a disappointment Bluegrass turned out to be. Food was cold, items missing off the order on both courses. Service very basic and they called last orders for drinks at 9 o’clock.
Unfortunately, we will not be returning to this restaurant.
Food was ok, service was ok but nice atmosphere and music. Food was tasty but I’m big into my bbq and smoked food and I cook better. The menu says smoked in our authentic smokers but doesn't state when or where. So will be offsite and then frozen, food arrived Luke warm, was all cooked but just not hot.
Ok, bit difficultordering via the app as it was temperamental.
Food was good seemed to be bigger portions than delivery.
Considering Covid it was as good as it could be.
Great food at very reasonable prices. Its the best Breakfast in Reading.
Waited over hour for our food for it to come out cold.
Had to ask two times where our orders were.
Table behind waited over an hour too.
Food was cold, meat wasn’t hot at all.
Food was good however service very slow and app not good
