The food was great. Our server was very nice but took a lot of time to come back. We had a larger party and seemed like we were waiting a long time in between drink orders and food orders. It wasn’t busy, so we really didn’t understand what was taking so long.

My mom and I went here before our showing to see SIX at the civic center! We were seated and served right away. To drink I had the coco Hydration mocktail which was delicious. To start we shared a platter of mango crab Rangoon also delicious. Then to eat I had the Avo Kaluna which had a plant-based Tuna which I had never heard of before but it was tasty as was the second roll I had which was the Cowgirl also one of their many vegan rolls. I was very impressed by the sheer amount of vegan/vegetarian options they had which is something you don’t often get at restaurants in Des Moines. Will definitely be coming here again!

We had a great server (there at the right times, nice, and a hard worker). Our food was amazing (fresh, tasty, and high end). The atmosphere was perfect to celebrate a birthday for a 20 year old.

The service is extremely slow even when it is half full, half of the 4 orders came out 30 mins before we mentioned to the server that we were just going to pay the bill and leave (after a 45 min wait). The serve had zero empathy for the situation as we had 4 adults and two children, and commented that it just came “right out” funny how that works after waiting 30 mins and half of the party being done with their meal right. I asked for the bill and was given a handheld card reader that didn’t have the bill itemized and after seeing the 128$ bill for 2 appetizers, 2 meals and 4 drinks I began to question if she actually took the food/ last drink order off our tab. Shocker, she didn’t, after asking to speak with a manager about 10 mins later she came over and asked “what do you need”. At this point I was done with this place and decided it wasn’t worth the discussion if it’s that big of a hassle to have a conversation. If your going to have bad service at least have the courtesy to be able to hold an actual conversation and know what is going on. Like I told her, it’s not even worth a discussion at this point, and I would def avoid this place.

Food was pricey and not that tasty. Almost all the sushi contained crab mix. When I asked if this was real crab or imitation i was told imitation. Flavor was lacking in everything we ordered. There are better places in town for sushi. Save your money!
Blue Sushi Sake Grill - Des MoinesResponded on February 13, 2023Hi Terry, we're sorry that you were disappointed. We do use imitation crab mix in some of our maki, but not all. Unfortunately, we used to get in snow crab and our guests could make a substitution for that if they wanted to, but as of just three weeks ago we had to take snow crab off of our menu. The reason for this is because we've made a pledge to only buy our seafood from vendors that practice strict sustainability, and we'll only buy seafood that isn't threatened by over-fishing.

This was our second time at this restaurant and it was an amazing evening. Our server was one of the best I’ve ever had. She was very knowledgeable, broke down each section of their menu {newish to eating at a sushi restaurant!} and offered amazing recommendations based on our likes and dislikes. Everything we tried was amazing and she nailed it with her suggestions.

Food was absolute mediocre. Ordered a few raw sushi rolls and the cevice appetizer. Not very tasty. Very few cooked options for those at our table who didn't want to eat raw. Service was just meh. The atmosphere was the best part unfortunately. It's a cool vibe in the restaurant.

We are regular customers and enjoy Blue Sushi. This particular evening was a bit disappointing with slow service. It was also not a busy evening so that made it even more confusing. We also were disappointed in some of the other guests. One group of young ladies were particularly boisterous, and another couple wreaking of cannabis. Can't really blame the restaurant for that, but it did effect the overall dining experience.

Service wasn’t great. Wasn’t busy, and yet our plates weren’t cleared til the end of our visit and our waters weren’t refilled for a very long time. Waiter barely came to check on how we were doing. Also, all of our food came at different times (15+ min difference when we all ordered at the same time).

Sushi and Crab Rangoon sounded so good, but actually tasted bland, they all tasted the same and were flavorless. Could be so much better.

We got 6 different rolls, edamame and brussel sprouts. Everything was amazing and got better with each piece. Definitely will return.

Waited over 45 minutes for our food. I realize sushi takes time but I haven’t had to wait this long at other restaurants. And the food was just as good. The waiters seemed very frustrated because they knew people were having to wait so long. I only gave our disgruntled waiter a good tip because I felt sorry for her.

This place is excellent! Large sushi selection and some of the best sushi I’ve had. We had the Tidal Wave and Godzilla Bomb rolls - both excellent. We also tried the lettuce wraps and mango crab rangoon for appetizers - delicious. Our server Katherine was great. Beautiful decor and ambience. We will be back!

The food tastes great and our server was friendly. Unfortunately the kitchen staff can’t get the timing correct of prepping orders for a table. This was our second visit when there was a 20 minute time lapse between the first and last entree was delivered to our table. It makes for a very awkward dining experience.
