Blue Smoke Ratings and Reviews
Came here for dinner after work with my wife. We were picking out restaurants to try out and landed on Blue Smoke. We've been here a few times and it never disappointed us and this time was just as good. I ordered the spicy fried chicken with a few sides and my wife ordered the Alabama wings with fries. We both loved our food and the service was incredible I would recommend this place to everyone who loves BBQ and food in general!
As a frequent visitor to NY, we have dined at Blue Smoke many times over the past 20 years.
Sad to say, last Friday was our last.
Where to start?
First they claim to be open late (closing at 12:00 AM).
When we arrived for our 10:30 PM reservation we were informed that they close at 11:00PM.
The restaurant is quite large. When we asked to sit in the back room, we were told the back room was closing, we would have to sit in the last open booth up front which was extremely small and very uncomfortable for two adults.
We were ignored for quite a while until a busboy finally brought us over 2 half gallon jugs of undrinkable tap water and then proceeded to stare at us.
After a few moments, we said we would like a drink from the bar.
We ordered two Absolut martinis, very dry, straight up with a twist.
He asked us to repeat the order and then disappeared, heading in a totally different direction than the bar.
A waiter arrived and asked if we would like a drink. We told him we had ordered drinks but were doubtful the order ever reached the bartender.
We ordered again. "We don't carry that brand of vodka".
We chose another brand , the order was placed and the waiter returned to answer any questions about the menu.
The once large menu is now a very limited one; perhaps for "Late Night" dining.
(Whatever happened to the city that never sleeps?)
Rib choices were very limited; with unlimited explanations.
Their famous pulled pork bar-b-que sandwich?
Gone, except at lunch but you can get a bar-b-que platter with two slices of bread.
How about the Blue Smoke Burger medium rare?
Sorry, the Blue Smoke burger is now two beef patties, so it's impossible to make it rare.
(Like a Dave's Double?)
Huzzah! The drinks and food arrive together.
Who doesn't drink cocktails with their meal, right???
BS's usual assortment of condiments was nowhere to be seen, not even salt and pepper on the table.
As we ate our dinner the neon "Open Late" sign went out.
Food was nothing like I would have expected. Just very poor brisket and the wings were ridiculous. You don't even get full drumsticks, you get these messy little bone-nuggets that just were an obvious cost cutting measure. The brisket was a la carte, I'm okay with that as long as the brisket can stand on its own and it can't. Three slices of mostly gristle, the fat hadn't rendered down and there was no real smoked flavor to it. Anyone who has ever had a real barbecue brisket would be irritated to see this show up at the table. Save your time, money, and effort, this place needs some serious work.
Bridget was our waitress... the nicest and most helpful when recommending beer with meals and was just so accommodating. We loved the:
Cole slaw was amazing
Chocolate cake was "out of this world"!
Briscut tips were a little too tough and sauce was sweeter than I liked as well as the beans but the briscut salad, chicken apps etc, fantastic! Also I left my jacket near closing time and they had it waiting by the front door🤗. Thanks Bridget!!!
This was probably my 15th time at Blue Smoke. My first time being in 2011. A couple years back they changed chefs and he changed and cut the menu down noticeably. At first I wasn't a fan of the change because there were less options. Long story short, I was worried for no reason. All the main things that I liked from the old menu, minus the chipotle wings were carried over. All I can say is overall Blue Smoke is probably the best bbq spot in nyc. As an appetizer we had the white bbq wings which they said won wings of the year in NY. With or without sauce they were great. We also had the spare ribs with Blue Smokes bbq sauce. The ribs taste great alone but the sauce really completes it. The mac and cheese is super cheesy but good. I won't say it's the best mac and cheese because Dinosaur owns that crown. The cheese fries are probably better than the mac because the fries have seasoning to it. And we finished with the cheesecake. The cheesecake is small but good. The server was knowledgable and courteous. The drinks were strong too. The only slight complaint is that the food took 40 minutes to come out. But it was still worth the wait. Still my pick above dinosaur and way above mighty quinns and hill country.
My second trip to Blue Smoke. 1st time at this location. Food is very good. Haven't had a bad dish yet there. Nothing over the top incredible, but very solid authentic cuisine. . . The wife was very disappointed with how they handled a breastfeeding mother at the bar though. Or should I say didn't handle. Apparently it's fine to drink and breastfeed at Blue Smoke. Talked with the assistant manager and nothing...
Blue Smoke has gotten better!
I hadn't been in a number of months and wasn't particularly positive on the place.
But, this tine the food was fantastic. excellent Pork BBQ and meats.
I had a VanBrunt Bourbon Manhattan that was excellent.
The chocolate layer cake was incredible!!!!!
Good food, a bit pricey for the quality and we were unsure of the format and had it been explained we would have ordered differently. We had been led to believe it was a jazz club and restaurant so were hoping to hear some jazz, to find out the jazz club is downstairs and you have to buy tickets in advance to go and listen. We felt a bit rushed, main course came as we were still eating the starter!
This place is such a fantastic spot for almost anything. Casual barbecue meets fine service. Anyone can be comfortable here and the food is amazing (as long as you're not dieting, haha). Value is outstanding, and yes, you can bring a date here for a romantic evening. Or bring a friend to the bar for a boys or girls night out. Or go downstairs for the live jazz. Whatever you're in the mood for. I'll be back for sure.
Really enjoyed everything. The only caveat is the "family meal" should be approached with caution. We ended up taking a LOT of food home. We were a table of 5, a family meal for three would have filled us up just fine. ALL was delicious, service was stellar. Love the space.
Used to love this place. Food used to be super tasty. I haven't been there in over 7 years. So was exited to return for a good meal and some catch up time with my friend. We weren't in any rush but the meal took forever to come out and when it got to us it was lukewarm, the biscuits didn't seem fresh, the meat flavorless and the side salads seemed comically small. These things don't seem that much to ask, are they? Hot, fresh, flavorful food. Paying the exorbitant prices they charge I want a quality meal. I'll pay for a memorable experience. Sad that it's deteriorated to this level. I won't be returning to see how much worse it gets.
The burger was mediocre on a Martin potato roll!! Side lettuce was romaine, covering half the plate!! Cole slaw came out warm- had to ask for one that wasn't sitting under a heat lamp! Service was goodenough, but food came out too fast!! Makes you wonder!! My wine was 1/3 full!! Really???
Quality of BBQ was mediocre, at best!!
Wing and potato chip appetizer was good!
Wouldn't go back!!
It used to be very good alternative "healthier " BBQ with free range and organic meats with traditional southern/ Texan recipes, pulled pork sandwich, chipotle wings and salad options but it changed in recent years, foods/recipes got fattier, wings made w mayo are way too heavy, BBQ chicken breast left menu, prices went up and pork ribs were dried out...over last few years we've tried to like new menu but overall really bummed out as we used to LOVE going there and went often as a family.
They keep changing the menu!! It's still good but some portions like the mac and cheese got smaller for same price while beef ribs only come in full rack that's $45! And they don't give you sauces to use. Food is still great but every time I go looking forward to one thing - it's totally different!
After craving ribs for about two weeks I decided to bring the family to Blue Smoke for their first time (my second). What started off as a very pleasant conversation between my girlfriend, her mom and I soon became an all out feeding frenzy lol.
Lindsey (I hope I spelled that correctly) came and took our orders after answering a few questions we had in expert fashion, then went to retrieve our beverages and get our order going. It couldn't have even been 15 minutes before our food arrived, which was great because the 3 of us had missed lunch! I had a full rack of spare ribs, they didn't even NEED the homemade BBQ sauce! My lady and her mom got matching fried chicken platters, had the mandatory side of mac and some delicious seasoned fries. We also threw in a few extra biscuits and some deviled eggs because why not?!
I'm going to recommend this place to anyone within earshot for as long as I can, this restaurant is truly amazing from the food to the decor and the staff, what really put our experience over the top was our server Lindsey.
Food was tasty. Brisket portion was very small. Chicken portion was good. Sides portions were disappointingly small. Collard greens were delicious, as were the baked beans. They just didn't give you enough. Don't bother with the side salad, it consisted of 5 small leaves of lettuce. The biscuits are awesome! The shining star was the wings. Absolutely amazing. I'd go back just for them!! Bonus points because they had hard cider on the menu.
I've always enjoyed dining at Blue Smoke. The barbeque is varied and always wonderful. But, my favorite is the Blue Smoke Burger. How can one resist 8-ounces of beef topped with cheese and bacon and all the fixings? And, don't forget those fries! Who can resist them? They're wonderfully crisp on the outside with a soft potato texture seasoned throughout. While the fries are well worth the trip to Blue Smoke, don't forget the beers and ales. The variety of beers/ales are extensive and each is wonderful in its own right. One would not be disappointed by sampling more than one - as long as they've been accompanied by a designated driver.
My friend LOVED her fried chicken, and we both loved the biscuits. But my brisket salad was NOT very good. The meat was very dry, it was too cold, and overall the salad was uninspired. I go here a lot and it's not consistently good, but when it's good, it's great. Also, there were several large groups and the noise level was even higher than usual. I had to say "what" to my friend over and over.
Fantastic service all around. From the moment you walk in, everyone on the floor -- the hosts, the servers, the bar staff, runners, managers -- are helpful, friendly, and happy to see you in the restaurant. The food is fantastic. That the service matches that makes it doubly worth it.
