About Blue Plate
The Blue Plate opened in 1999 as a casual spot where friends and neighbors can enjoy the best ingredients our seasons have to offer. Owners Cory Obenour and Jeff Trenam have created a space that feels like a home, with three distinct dining rooms each appointed with the work of local artists. In the back, a lush, night-fragrant garden offers an exotic retreat from the bustle of the city. The kitchen stays committed to using the highest quality local produce and meats in classic American and rustic Mediterranean dishes. Through a working friendship with Bay Area farmers, the Blue Plate is expanding the notion of "the blue plate special" to include dining that is casual, affordable, delicious and responsible.

Blue Plate Ratings and Reviews
This is a go-to dinner spot for visitors and special occasions. Menu is approachable but the most delicious way of preparing it. Gluten-free options including fried chicken. We went for a family thank-you dinner with 4 people. We split 3 small plates to start (try the seasonal butter lettuce salad!!) and each had a large plate for dinner. So so so delicious.
Ambiance is lively, but ok for conversations. Feels like a real hidden gem for locals only.
Make a reso though, unless you'd like bar seating.
We chose our first meal at Blue Plate on Valentine's Day. Probably not the best day to try a new restaurant. Although we waited one full hour, with reservations, for our table the mood was very positive and we had enjoyable conversations with other waiting patrons and the very friendly, (and apologetic) management and staff while we waited. Hey, it was Valentine's Day, and they handled it very well.
Once we were seated, the food came quickly and, although the kitchen was positively slammed with an overflowing house, the dishes were perfectly executed and absolutely spot on.
We started with the asparagus soup, light and tasty, not too heavily creamed. We shared the Dungeness crab salad on garlic toast which was just the right balance. I ordered the meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and green beans...iconic comfort food and one of the best renditions I've ever had. My wife ordered the short ribs on a bed of polenta which literally melted in one's mouth. Dessert was a decadent molten center chocolate cake for me and the famous Blue Plate key lime pie for my wife. Both were the perfect finish to a great meal.
If the kitchen can be this consistent during a hectic Valentine's Day with the line stretching out the front door for most of the night, then I expect on normal days they must totally rock.
The only drawbacks were the tiny tables. Seating is a bit crowded and the tables are more suited to a cafe than a full service restaurant. Noise level..well, it was a holiday and every table was occupied.
rating would be a little higher but we unfortunately received a table at a large window in back of restaurant and froze due to cold windy night on valentines day. owner should be aware of this and invest in floor heat in that area for winter nights. focaccia bread tasty but salty.
Love this place. Never had anything but a first rate meal here. With a new influx of crab, we went for it, fried with a cornmeal crust. Wasn't sure how that would be, but it was delicious, the crab perfectly cooked and tasty bites of the crust to eat with it.
And, you get none of the pretentiousness often found in the city. Highly recommended.
The smoked-then-fried chicken is my new favorite food on the planet. It’s like bacon and fried chicken made a baby.
The pasta salad side has a lot of rich creaminess and a lot of olive, so it’s a bit heavy as a compliment to smoky fried chicken. An option for some acid and/or veg to cut the richness would be appreciated.
We have been dining at Blue Plate for as long as it has been open. It continues to be a favorite place for us. The odd thing is we have only ordered appetizers! We make a meal with 3-4 apps! You taste the talents of the kitchen. The wine list has improved and it was easy to order wines by the glass. Make a res and enjoy!
The host did not greet us when we arrived, she was pretty rude to start off with. We were here for restaurant week so it was great to get a tasting of their menu. They seat you extremely close to other tables, we sat next to an obnoxiously loud man unfortunately. Fried chicken was cooked perfectly I recommend that!
We came here for restaurant week. The options offered were very good. Portions were really large. One of us ordered the 3 course restaurant offering, one just ordered an entree. We shared the faro- egg appetizer, a really large portion and very tasty. We both had the short ribs, again large portions and really tasty. We could not finish them and we are not smaller eaters. We shared the chocolate dessert, very good. We were both very full, with leftovers for lunch. We will return.
We were promised a glass of champagne when making the reservation. Nobody ever offered it or mentioned it. We were there for Restaurant Week and their special menu was very poor, and food quality below mediocre and soooo not worth the price! I don’t understand why this place is rated so high; very disappointing.
First time at this restaurant. Even though it was a casual atmosphere the food was anything but that. Comfort food taken to the next level with great tastes and good sized portions. The food did take a little while to come out of the kitchen but we were in no hurry and had a relaxing dinner. Would highly recommend this place.
Everything is always great here! Been coming here here ever since it opened and I have not had anything that I didn't like! Cory is a great Chef and Shannon is the best Host! We started out with the best deviled eggs ever, had a nice salad and I had the New York Strip and she had the Meatloaf which is a staple and is exceptional. For sure a New Years to remember!
I love Blue Plate and keep coming back!
Staff is always insanely friendly and personable, and the chef works constantly to play creatively with his dishes and ingredients. The staples are phenomenal, and the changing menu items are always entertaining and delicious.
Blue Plate should be a model for all restaurants. Our waiter was attentive and the food was delicious. Our party was the first in the restaurant. We were greeted warmly by the hostess. That is one way to get off to a great start. Plus, the restaurant was so quiet we conversed at a normal voice level. Of course the restaurant was packed when we left and the volume went up but the first hour was lovely. Blue Plate offered us a memorable dining experience.
The Blue Plate has a great vibrant atmosphere. A small and cozy restaurant in the mission which is appealing to young people. The noise level is very high. The food was a big disappointment and It’s a pricy place. The butternut squash soup was loaded with cream and cheese and was inedible by my friend who also ordered the quail. Only one tiny quail on her plate. My other dining partner ordered the pasta which was also loaded with cream and he gave it a thumbs down. I ordered the calamari appetizer and found it delicious. I also ordered the cod and clams which was dry and over cooked. So, in my opinion, the restaurant did not live up to it’s reputation. But my last word is that people were enjoying themselves, it was packed with diners, and maybe we just ordered the wrong thing.
The hostess was not very friendly. The server was friendly enough until she discovered we had diet restrictions at which point she made us feel like we were such a bother.
We ordered meatloaf, mac n cheese, rock cod & clams, fried chicken, cavatelli, brussel sprouts. Every dish was overly salty except for the rock cod & clams which was excellent.
Ambience was nice though a little on the noisy side.
Came here with my wife for a 8pm reservation. We ended up waiting 25 minutes for a table. After ordering, we received our 2 appetizers about 30 minutes after placing our order. An hour later we, along with many other tables, were still waiting on entrees.
We canceled the rest of our meal which was disappointing because the two appetizers were really good. The waitress was nice and management were apologetic about the long wait.
