About Blue Plate
The Blue Plate opened in 1999 as a casual spot where friends and neighbors can enjoy the best ingredients our seasons have to offer. Owners Cory Obenour and Jeff Trenam have created a space that feels like a home, with three distinct dining rooms each appointed with the work of local artists. In the back, a lush, night-fragrant garden offers an exotic retreat from the bustle of the city. The kitchen stays committed to using the highest quality local produce and meats in classic American and rustic Mediterranean dishes. Through a working friendship with Bay Area farmers, the Blue Plate is expanding the notion of "the blue plate special" to include dining that is casual, affordable, delicious and responsible.

Blue Plate Ratings and Reviews
The Blue Plate has a great vibrant atmosphere. A small and cozy restaurant in the mission which is appealing to young people. The noise level is very high. The food was a big disappointment and It’s a pricy place. The butternut squash soup was loaded with cream and cheese and was inedible by my friend who also ordered the quail. Only one tiny quail on her plate. My other dining partner ordered the pasta which was also loaded with cream and he gave it a thumbs down. I ordered the calamari appetizer and found it delicious. I also ordered the cod and clams which was dry and over cooked. So, in my opinion, the restaurant did not live up to it’s reputation. But my last word is that people were enjoying themselves, it was packed with diners, and maybe we just ordered the wrong thing.
The hostess was not very friendly. The server was friendly enough until she discovered we had diet restrictions at which point she made us feel like we were such a bother.
We ordered meatloaf, mac n cheese, rock cod & clams, fried chicken, cavatelli, brussel sprouts. Every dish was overly salty except for the rock cod & clams which was excellent.
Ambience was nice though a little on the noisy side.
Came here with my wife for a 8pm reservation. We ended up waiting 25 minutes for a table. After ordering, we received our 2 appetizers about 30 minutes after placing our order. An hour later we, along with many other tables, were still waiting on entrees.
We canceled the rest of our meal which was disappointing because the two appetizers were really good. The waitress was nice and management were apologetic about the long wait.
I took one star away because of the not impressive vegetarian option. The food is absolutely delicious. The service started with the mistep but they fixed it professionally and the service is very friendly. The rose wine is perfectly chilled.
We started with grilled calamari and salad. Then, we had ling cod and soup for the entree. My vegetarian could not find any entree so he picked the soup as the entree. All of them are spot on delicious.
There is one weird service approach of the restaurant. On Monday, we arrived the restaurant, the restaurant was totally empty. Since we had the reservation, they took us to the back. Throughout the whole night, they did not seat any customers in the front house, which is a weird arrangement. If I did not know this restaurant and just walked pass it, I would not pick this restaurant because of the emptiness.
I love the homey atmosphere, friendly staff and atmosphere, and always impeccably delicious food! Not a fancy venue, but my husband I love it for date nights, special occasions, or any time we just have to have Blue Plate's fried chicken. We come here just the two of us, bring our parents, and always bring friends when they visit from out of town.
The food came out without too much waiting, food quality fit the prices, was absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked as well as gorgeous presentations, service was spectacular and the ambience was very cozy and romantic. It was a fabulous place to take my girlfriend out, on a date and she was very impressed with everything. We loved our experience and would definitely consider revisiting on another occasion.
I don't know if it was just a rough night or it is the usual experience, but dinner was long and service was non-existent. We arrived at 6pm and left at 815 and were waiting for our food at every course. My $28 pork loin was over cooked and the server never checked on me so that I let her know. Too pricey to be that wrong.
I love Blue Plate and have been coming since they opened early 20 years ago. On this occasion I sent three friends there for dinner. I called ahead and gave them my credit card number and it was absolutely no problem. Although they have been seriously successful, they are still neighborhoods-ly friendly.
Blue Plate is on our list of wonderful SF restaurants where we have no hesitation to take friends for a great dinner ... if you enjoy Flour & Water, Nopa, Rich Table, Seven Hills, Stones Throw, Thanh Long, Trestle, Cotagna, SPQR, Hillside Supper Club, In Situ, Ju Ni, La Ciccia, Mourad, Octavia, Quince, etc., add Blue Plate to your dining destinations!
One of my fav dishes is the fried chicken. The skin is to die for! The meat is so moist and tender. If you love fried chicken the last time you were in New Orleans, you'll be delighted with Blue Plate's!
Cooking fish right so it's flavorful and moist can be challenging for restaurants but no so for Blue Plate. We had ling cod and it was right on the mark (you'll love the accompanying fried chick peas)!
Peach and heirloom tomato salad. Order it. Nuf said.
And for the vegetarians in the crowd, the risotto with sweet corn and hen of the woods mushroom is absolutely delicious. Can you say ohhhhhh, the oakiness is crazy good?
The fried chicken met my expectations after reading several great reviews. It was a great combination of crispy and tender, and went well with the buttermilk ranch dipping sauce that they provide. The macaroni salad also went well with the meal. We also tried the deviled eggs, which were wonderfully creamy with a little bit of crunch, and the macaroni and drunken goat cheese, which was a tasty variation. My friend, who is a wine connoisseur, was very happy with the wine list and picked out couple of nice pours (a gris, then a barboa). Last, but not least, was the butterscotch pudding, which was a delicious way to end the meal. Our only complaint was that the service was a little slow, seeming like we were waiting a bit too long at times. But our waitress was welcoming and helpful, so this was a very minor nit. The place itself is very charming and intimate, with a nice open kitchen arrangement.
We had a delightful start to the meal, 2 starters, several glasses of wine, 3 fried chicken dinners and dessert. We asked for our food to be boxed to take home and had a little over 1/2 of each meal left. When we got the check we asked for our boxes and the server said they were gone. The gentleman who took our plates to be boxed said they were not and went to get them and the server stopped him and told him they were gone. This left the entire table and the man who took our food very confused. He seemed to know where it was and wanted to get it but the server grabbed his arm and said it's gone. The server said he'd give us a gift card and basically pushed us out the door. We spent $200 dollars and walked out with a $25 gift card that won't even cover 1 plate. I've been to blue plate over a dozen times and have recommended it twice as many times. The end to our meal this time has made me feel like they just wanted us to get out and didn't care that they lost all of our food and wouldn't even offer to remake what they lost.
Disappointed and I won't be back so their gift card is worthless to me.
Would have preferred the waitress to be a bit more energetic about the menu and her personal favorites. She was not excited to give suggestions and just kept saying everything was delicious when we asked her for her opinion between to dishes. I like it when servers sell me on certain dishes since I obviously know everything is good on the menu.
