A great dining experience for a GNO (Girl’s Night Out). The “Shannager” was welcoming and witty, that’s the manager Shannon 😇.
Easy and welcoming atmosphere, lovely staff and well looked after. The food was very well pitched, seasonal and healthy and just the right sized portions. I came alone whilst travelling for work, didn't feel lonely and came away having marked the trip with a new favourite place
We love Blue Plate! It's an absolute treasure. We like to sit in the back room or middle room, so we can see the greenery from the garden out back. The wine list is exceptional, and the food is always amazing. California comfort food. We had the grilled asparagus and grilled carrots appetizers, the meatloaf (their specialty), fried chicken and steak entrees, and some fantastic wines by the glass. The servers are always really attentive, chatty and cool. We wound up sitting and talking for a really long time on a Saturday night, and never felt rushed. The Key Lime Pie is hands-down the most incredible dessert any of us had ever tasted. Favorite restaurant to go for slightly more special than a usual dinner, as it's not cheap. But worth every penny. They are awesome!
Really creative and delicious dishes this time. Always one of my favorites - menu changes often so be sure to look at the online menu regularly.
This is truly an neighborhood gem. I live in the Mission and this is my favorite Mission restaurant. The food is superb and every time I go in I get welcomed like family. Hospitable, warm. delicious. There's old standards on the menu to rely on and always something new and seasonal. It's the restaurant I take friends visiting to and go back to time and time again with friends and family.
Consistently great food in a cozy neighborhood environment.
Arrived early. Nice table good service
I was dissapointed this time as service was extremely slow although the server was extremely kind. They comp our desserts. My steak was tough and very salty. I basically paid a lot for a few pieces of grilled esparagus. Couldn’t eat the steak.
Food is delicious, service was good but the noise level inside the restaurant made it difficult to hear other dinner guests, even those sitting next to you.
I’d come back but ask to be seated somewhere quieter.
I always love eating here...the staff are amazing.
Four of us ate at Blue Plate on 4/8/18 and overall it was a very good meal. The pea salad, the macaroni and cheese, the duck, the hangar steak, and the fried chicken were all excellent, and we all loved the bread served to the table -- delicious. The service was great...very attentive. And the restaurant has a very fun, casual atmosphere. This was our second time back after many years, so I was excited.
My two complaints were the creamed kale which was WAY over-salted...I could not take more than two bites. I brought it home, however, to hopefully doctor it up and lessen the sodium pain. The biggest complaint is the noise level. I wear hearing aids. With them, the din of the restaurant is unbearable as it is so loud. But even having taken them out, I found it to be uncomfortably noisy. The four of us had to speak quite loudly and crane our necks to hear one another, and the tables are not that big. I don't know how the staff work there all evening; I'm sure their hearing is being impaired. I was so glad to get outside after our meal was over. I love the place, but the noise will keep me away. I really wish the owners could find some way to soften the blow.
Great food, small but comfortable ambience, cool area of city
Celebrating bday event. But didn’t know that our reservation had time constraints. We were told that there was a reservation at 8 after us and we have 40 minutes to get done. Ruined the mood so we were rushing through dessert. Otherwise food was great.
Comfort food on steroids. Great attention to presentation and portions. Enjoyed everything we ordered but favs are the ricotta wood hen mushroom ravioli and the ahi tuna.
And the focaccia was just Everything! This was the perfect food for a cold and windy evening. Will be back next time I'm in town.
Love this place! It always hits the spot.
One of the best restaurants in San Francisco. Period.
Birthday dinner at an old favorite, enjoyed it very much.
Friendly service and delicious food! Portions were spot on! Highly recommend the mashed potatoes no matter what you order it with!
Good food, pleasant surroundings, altogether a warm and comfortable evening at a reasonable price.
We were in SF to visit our daughters. We are always hunting for great places to eat. We ate at Blue Plate 2 years ago but had not been back until our most recent trip. There are so many places to eat in SF that we tend to spread ourselves around during our frequent visits. We need to move Blue Plate up to our "must repeat" short list. We had an outstanding dining experience this time. Great atmosphere, great staff and fabulous food. Everything we ordered was outstanding. Starters: Deviled eggs, grilled squid and pork belly.....yum! Mains: Fried chicken-2 orders, Meat loaf and Braised short ribs.....super good!
We will be back!
They have the best fried chicken. Also make sure you have the deserts.
I go to Blue Plate pretty frequently and the food is always great, as is the service. It's such a consistently good dining experience that I find it a great place to take friends or visitors to the city.
I love Blue Plate, it is a consistent gem. I live walking distance from the restaurant and can most nights get a table. The drunken goat macaroni and cheese is my favorite! My one tip is ask for the back rooms, quieter and I love either a view of the garden or the paintings in the middle room.
We are visiting from out of town and had the most relaxed and delicious meal at Blue Plate. The staff was so chill and also kind to our kids. The wine list was fantastic and paired great with the delectable meal. The restaurant was really cozy and casual. An absolutely great find that we would recommend hands down.
The food was spectacular, as always. The ambiance is perfect for a casual first date or a friends get together. The food typically has a great balance/combination of texture and flavor. I haven’t disliked anything on the menu. Although, we were a bit rushed the last time we were there because there were other people waiting for our table. The restaurant comped our drinks while we relocated to the outdoor terrace. It was not necessary but was much appreciated. Blue Plate is always worth a revisit!
We come here frequently with folks from out of town, and for birthdays etc, and Blue Plate never fails to impress. They are so consistent, have great wine choices, and the staff is super personable and helpful. Their menu changes with the seasons, but the fried chicken and key lime pie are amazing and available all year.
Cold SF nite. Nice that they let us in a minute before 5.30! Fried Chicken should state dark meat only on menu! Two pieces, one of them should have been white meat (esp for those who are not as keen on dark meat like me!) Paul Martin has a wonderful fried chicken dinner white & dark, mashed potatoes, salad & ice cream $27! The two "boys" had meatloaf. One was ok with his the other said too loose not tight (gravy too runny.) The winner was asparagus with pine nuts for the table. Two glasses of Ottimino zin and Walch schiava were fine. Key lime pie was good esp the dollop of fresh whipping cream with lime zest! The bottom crust was a bit soggy, thankfully the crust around the rim was still crisp (that's the best part!)
The food was good, they didn't bring our Mac n cheese on time and then took it to the wrong table. By the time it got to us we were full and wanted to take it, they insisted on boxing our items and then did not include our mac n cheese in our bag, we had a full box of Mac n cheese.
Blue Plate specializes in comfort food and they pull it off exquisitely. You can spend a night out at Blue Plate and go home satisfied.
This place is GREAT! It's far from where I live, but I went there once and loved it so much I went back. Service is great and friendly and the menu is fabulous. They did not have Brussel sprouts on the menu this time, which my boyfriend loved. I asked the waitress and she checked with the kitchen and they had some left over from the night before, so they made him his Brussel sprouts. This place is a hidden gem.
This is a go-to dinner spot for visitors and special occasions. Menu is approachable but the most delicious way of preparing it. Gluten-free options including fried chicken. We went for a family thank-you dinner with 4 people. We split 3 small plates to start (try the seasonal butter lettuce salad!!) and each had a large plate for dinner. So so so delicious.
Ambiance is lively, but ok for conversations. Feels like a real hidden gem for locals only.
Make a reso though, unless you'd like bar seating.
We chose our first meal at Blue Plate on Valentine's Day. Probably not the best day to try a new restaurant. Although we waited one full hour, with reservations, for our table the mood was very positive and we had enjoyable conversations with other waiting patrons and the very friendly, (and apologetic) management and staff while we waited. Hey, it was Valentine's Day, and they handled it very well.
Once we were seated, the food came quickly and, although the kitchen was positively slammed with an overflowing house, the dishes were perfectly executed and absolutely spot on.
We started with the asparagus soup, light and tasty, not too heavily creamed. We shared the Dungeness crab salad on garlic toast which was just the right balance. I ordered the meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and green beans...iconic comfort food and one of the best renditions I've ever had. My wife ordered the short ribs on a bed of polenta which literally melted in one's mouth. Dessert was a decadent molten center chocolate cake for me and the famous Blue Plate key lime pie for my wife. Both were the perfect finish to a great meal.
If the kitchen can be this consistent during a hectic Valentine's Day with the line stretching out the front door for most of the night, then I expect on normal days they must totally rock.
The only drawbacks were the tiny tables. Seating is a bit crowded and the tables are more suited to a cafe than a full service restaurant. Noise level..well, it was a holiday and every table was occupied.
We had amazing service and the food was delicious. I had the fried chicken which was crunchy and full of flavor and my husband had the scallops which he loved. The key lime pie for dessert should not be overlooked. Definitely coming back to try more food.
rating would be a little higher but we unfortunately received a table at a large window in back of restaurant and froze due to cold windy night on valentines day. owner should be aware of this and invest in floor heat in that area for winter nights. focaccia bread tasty but salty.
Love this place. Never had anything but a first rate meal here. With a new influx of crab, we went for it, fried with a cornmeal crust. Wasn't sure how that would be, but it was delicious, the crab perfectly cooked and tasty bites of the crust to eat with it.
And, you get none of the pretentiousness often found in the city. Highly recommended.
Funky and casual atmosphere yet romantic! We visited from Boston and we were very impressed. Delicious and innovative food selections. Only downside is they are super small and it makes it hard to wait for a table. Make a reservation!!
The smoked-then-fried chicken is my new favorite food on the planet. It’s like bacon and fried chicken made a baby.
The pasta salad side has a lot of rich creaminess and a lot of olive, so it’s a bit heavy as a compliment to smoky fried chicken. An option for some acid and/or veg to cut the richness would be appreciated.
We have been dining at Blue Plate for as long as it has been open. It continues to be a favorite place for us. The odd thing is we have only ordered appetizers! We make a meal with 3-4 apps! You taste the talents of the kitchen. The wine list has improved and it was easy to order wines by the glass. Make a res and enjoy!
The host did not greet us when we arrived, she was pretty rude to start off with. We were here for restaurant week so it was great to get a tasting of their menu. They seat you extremely close to other tables, we sat next to an obnoxiously loud man unfortunately. Fried chicken was cooked perfectly I recommend that!
We came here for restaurant week. The options offered were very good. Portions were really large. One of us ordered the 3 course restaurant offering, one just ordered an entree. We shared the faro- egg appetizer, a really large portion and very tasty. We both had the short ribs, again large portions and really tasty. We could not finish them and we are not smaller eaters. We shared the chocolate dessert, very good. We were both very full, with leftovers for lunch. We will return.
