Had 5 different waiters and two bills for some reason by the end of the night. I don’t write reviews but I’m going out my way to write this one. Food was subpar at best.
Food, drinks, and service was AMAZING! We’ll definitely be back!
Excellent service, the owner came over to recommend his favorite and the staff was very pleasant! Food and ambiance up to par.
Hostess didn’t smile, didn’t feel welcome. Water was brought to me with a product sticker very visible on the lemon wedge. I pointed it out to the waiter saying “ I think you missed something here” he promptly remedied. They only had 2 saki selections. The restaurant had 4 tables of patrons it wasn’t busy so noise was quite. It was early, plenty of parking. The drink special was pineapple, pretty but very sweet. There are no drink prices so I had to ask about saki and drink specials.
I ended up to leave without ordering lunch. which I’ve never done before. I didn’t see any dishes come out to decide to stay. They did have an extensive sushi menu and lunch specials. This review is not based on food as I didn’t give them an opportunity to taste. Please keep that in mind when deciding if this is the place for you.
I wasn’t feeling the restaurant. It seemed very unorganized and dirty. I was told they have been open one year. The outside sign is really good looking. Huge TVs to watch sports at a small bar.
Great food and place
Very pleasant dining experience. Being Sunday lunch, I think it was quieter than it would be for peak hours. Glad for the quiet
Fresh! Delicious! Unique! Very good attentive service. Decor is simple, clean. Memorable food, because it was so good!
We had a fabulous dinner, great wait staff! One of us is gf and the waiter checked with the kitchen to make sure which items on the menu were gf. Can't wait to go back!
The food and service at Blue Onyx are always top notch. It's also nice to be able to easily carry on a conversation and be able to hear each other.
I can not believe that I have been passing this restaurant for a while. The food and service was excellent! The staff and owner were so attentive and extremely professional! I will definitely be a returning customer!!
Awful service. Went to the bar to get our own drinks after waiting 20 minutes. Manager brought 1 ravioli for the 4 of us to share as an apology. 1 ravioli. Sushi was good. Service made it so bad that we won’t go back.
Enjoyed a Father's Day dinner at Blue Onyx Bistro. The staff is always friendly and the food delicious. I enjoyed the crab cakes entree and my father ordered the spicy chicken pasta. That dish is relatively mild, which is good - because my son ordered it too! The manager even comp'd our desserts for Father's Day, which was a nice touch. Recommended / thumbs up!
This place was absolutely fantastic. The service was excellent the entire staff was friendly and helpful and the Chef came by to make sure everything was up to standard. Everything was done exceptionally well. Unlike many of the new "upscale" restaurants in town where every sauce is similar to the next and nothing is truly unique Blue Onyx stands out with fresh new twist on quality main ingredients where every sauce is not only different but creative and perfect for the desired effect. This is definitely on my new list of favorites and go to establishments.
It was a pleasure to dine at this local spot!b Well done Chef!
EXCELLENT SERVICE, FOOD, SETTING, LOCATION. Waiter was VERY attentive. #bougiepalate approved
Interesting menu with emphasis on seafood. Food was excellent and prices reasonable. Will return.
The food was excellent. The waiter was a little slow even though the restaurant was not overly busy. However, it was not bad enough to prevent me from going back as the quality of the food more than made up for the slow service.
david, the owner visited our table three times to ensure we were happy!! he was terrific!!
Most unique take on Thai and American fusion seafood. Try their ravioli. It’s very different in a delicious way.
Dinner was good, service was a little slow. Overall a good experience. Will dine there again.
Nada espectacular comida buena pero el lugar no es muy bonito
It was good. Not good enough to make a permanent change from other sushi restaurants, but I will go again to try other dishes.
This is an amazing restaurant. There is something for everyone, steaks, fish, fowl, pasta and sushi. The dishes are creative and fresh. The owner, David, doesn't hesitate to stop by and check on your opinion of his fabulous creations. If the Chef has a special, order it, don't even question it ~ totally amazing. On top of the wonderful food, the prices are unbelievable. The same 8 oz steak at Pappas (with sides) is approximately $40, here $28. Try it ~ you will like it. And you can park you own car.
Absolutely outstanding! Thanks to my friend’s recommendation I feel so happy to find this gem in an otherwise neglected corner of the city. In fact the location isn’t ideal for a fine cuisine restaurant but the place has proved to be worthwhile visiting.
The service is very good, the chef is so nice we got a few extra plate to taste and I feel so proud that the dishes are successful fusion of Asian and western cuisine. The price is surprisingly reasonable for lunches with beautiful plates. Definitely recommend!
The Blue Onyx was suggested to us by 2 couples. Our experience was mixed. While the food was very good, the service was a bit slow. The atmosphere is glaring with blue neon the predominant motif. The room was loud, although there was a large party near us. I am not sure that I would return.
Food and ambiance were very good.
The waiter was very friendly and knowledgeable. His recommendations were superb. Everyone in our party thought the food was excellent especially the redfish, flounder, crabcake, fried jalepenos for appetizer!
We loved it! My only thought is that the entrees were $5.00 - $7.00 higher price point than needed.
Love this restaurant! Food is amazing and staff is fabulous. It has become our new favorite restaurant and we plan to come back a lot!
Great experience! Great food.. for a great price. Best customer service we have experienced out of all the restaurants we went to from our weekend getaway in Houston. We ordered sushi and it was the best raw fish we’ve ever ate! So buttery and melt in your mouth! I definitely recommend this place, such a beautiful ambience and vibe in there
It is very my mom birthday and my parents’ 29 years anniversary . They treated us so well and we felt so welcome . Everyone is so nice and sweet . The place is beautiful and clean . And the lighting is beautiful . The food is great . Good portion and delicious .
Very friendly staff
David , owner , so nice !
An excellent example of Asian-fusion cuisine in Houston; wonderful food and a very nice ambiance. Don't let its location in a strip center fool you.
Awesome!!! Get the Sea Bass
Bartender was inexperienced and wait staff was overwhelmed with dealing with a full house for Mother’s Day dinner. Apart from that, menu offerings were many and those at our table enjoyed their selection. Look forward to returning soon.
The Blue Onyx has some of the best (size & quality) sushi that we have tried within the city. This visit, we tried their handmade pasta and grilled mahi-mahi fish. Both were so delicious that we'll definitely be back for more on the menu.
This was our first visit to Blue Onyx Bistro. Overall, the experience was amazing. The set up, the vibe, the design of the establishment was very nice. Low-lighting (blue) makes it great for dates. We made a reservation, but it was pretty easy to get in. Starting with the drinks, they were pretty strong. We had the jalapeño poppers stuffed with crab meat — Excellent! It took a minute for them to come out, the chef personally came to our table and told us the original batch wasn’t up to his standards to be had them remade and he let us try the blue onyx ravioli. The combination of flavors was very appeasing! Our sushi (surf and turf, fish lover, masago, tako) while very good, it wasn’t great. That is the only reason they don’t get a full five stars. We also had the bread pudding topped with ice cream. OMG. It was so warm and moist, but the ice cream helped bring it together. It was yummy! I would definitely visit again and I would recommend everyone checking it out!
The oddest dining experience I’ve had over my 20yrs in Houston. I made an OpenTable reservation, was greeted and led to my table in the bar. Before I could sit down one of the three servers talking in the bar looked up and said “give us a moment”. His tone was firm and odd but I figured “whatever, I’ll take a moment to quickly walk around and check out the venue”. It’s a nice building with decent decor including a private dining room. As I started circling back to the bar the same guy approached and asked if I’m looking for anything, which makes two odd comments from one person before I even sit down. I told him I had a reservation and he seemed surprised. I went back to my table and sat there with five employees loitering in the bar so after 4 mins I had to ask if I can have a menu. They seemed startled like they didn’t notice I had nothing to look at. I tried ordering a cocktail from their cocktail menu but the same guy thought I was ordering an appetizer so I had to show him their menu and the name of the cocktail I wanted - that makes 3 odd interactions from one person. Then the manager came by but all she did was smile the whole time as I told her about my experience. I tried putting the rough start behind us and asked the manager for specials or a recommendation but she couldn’t offer even one. I told her it was my first time there and tried three different ways to get a recommendation. Finally I asked what she would recommend to her mom if this were her mom's first time in Blue Onyx and she didn’t understand what I was asking. I tried two more times to ask the same question and finally gave up and left. If there’s one thing I’m glad for is that I didn’t have anyone with me or I’d lose a lot of foodie credibility.
We went to celebrate my wife’s promotion. I was expecting it to be crowded on a Friday night but the crowd was light. The service was amazing and you could tell they took pride in hosting us.
The Blue Onyx is truly a gem - beautiful atmosphere, fresh & fabulous food and excellent service. Owner David Chang is always visible - tending to customer’s needs and providing helpful tips and insight to his enticing menu. Always a delight - go and enjoy!
Good food and great service!
