Great: vibe, service, ambiance, food flavor, live music.
Poor: very expensive tapas plates, recorded music too loud for conversation between live sets,
Disappointing: "No Cover" advertised, yet "Entertainment Fee" sought on check at end of night.

Blue LLama
Responded 4 days ago

Thank you for joining us and providing feedback. We apologize if our music was too loud for you to enjoy our full dining experience. Our mission is to connect the Love of Food and the Love of Music, but we never want one to be prioritized over the other. We are already working on how we communicate our Suggested Entertainment Fee, since people seem confused and don't realize it is appreciated so we can keep booking high caliber acts, but optional and never mandatory like a cover charge.

We had a great experience at the Blue LLama. It was fun to listen to live music while dining. The food and service were also outstanding. Our waiter was knowledgeable about the dishes and served us at a nice pace so we could enjoy the music and the food. The raddish salad, gnocchi, cheese plate and whitefish were amongst our favorite dishes.

The Yucca Gnocchi is a personal favorite of mine. I'd also recommend trying our Dry Aged Snake River Wagyu Sirloin during your next dinner visit. Did you know we're also open for Sunday brunch? From our brunch menu I'd recommend the French Toast and Southern Eggs Benedict. They're divine! We hope to see you soon!

Tried to find out how they operated before showing up for my reservation but that proved impossible. Upon arriving for our 5:45 reservation we were curly informed we had the table until 7:45 and would have to leave after that. So the band didn't start until 7. So having spent over $100 on 3 drinks and 2 shared plates we only got to listen to one set of music. Too pricey, too contrived, very unfriendly vibe. I'll spend my entertainment dollars elsewhere.

Blue LLama
Responded on July 1, 2019

Thank you for giving us feedback, Theodore. Generally we try to allow our guests enough time to enjoy the live music and full dinner service before preparing tables for the next reservation. We apologize if this was communicated in an unpleasant manner. We pride ourselves on having excellent customer service, but we apologize that you experienced something different. We will share your review with our team and make sure we take the proper measures to resolve this situation going forward.

Truly elevated food in a town where there is plenty of “premium mediocre” food. Ambiance was gorgeous and beautifully lit. Service was impeccable and sincerely enthusiastic. Music was top notch. I prefer my drinks stronger and less sweet, but that’s just me nitpicking to find a slight flaw. Along with Spencer, Taste Kitchen, and Pacific Rim, Blue Llama is among the best in town, and the best outside of Detroit.

Our visit was to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Our first encounter with, I think her name was Ashley, was very welcoming. She sat us at our table, went over each choice of sparkling water and the menu selection. She made recommendations on what to choose. We chose the lobster roll, strawberry pancakes, and Avocado, eggs and chorizo. The lobster roll was made with homemade bread which they toasted. It melted in my mouth. The bread was delicious and the filling was full of great taste. The strawberry pancakes with the berry foam was simply mouth watering. The avocado dish was delicious. We loved the band and the ambience. We have out of town guests coming and Blue Llama is on our list of places to visit.

We loved it. We like most of the dishes on the chef's choice but felt that it was a little too pricey. Next time, we will probably just order ala carte. Our bill was $240 for dinner for two with one bottle of wine ($54), including tip.

Loved that you guys do reservations!

What a great venue! Inviting, inclusive, friendly, ... My teenage son and I came for the music. He’s a prospective music student at U-M and this was our first visit. The whole experience was outstanding! The music was amazing! And the food equally so! It was the most delectable and original infusion of flavors we’ve had the pleasure of tasting! We've been here three times now, twice for dinner, and can emphatically report that Ann Arbor has finally acquired its long-wished-for upscale jazz supper club. Maybe better than most of its big-city counterparts, because the Blue LLama actually cares about the "supper" part of things.

The decor lies halfway between supper club-retro and spacely-futuristic. Service is impeccable: orders arrive promptly, empty water glasses get refilled and plates are whisked away. But the real star is the smal-plate menu. Too many standouts to mention them all, but my must-repeat list already includes the beet carpaccio, octopus-and-chorizo, and crawfish croquettes.

Ummm, did I mention the music? As a rule, they seem to program not-inexpensive ticketed shows with national and high-profile regional acts on the weekends, and local groups during the week that have a "suggested" music fee, instead of a cover charge, listed on your tab. (Ours was a reasonable $10 per person on one recent evening). Acoustics and sight-lines are impeccable, although we recommend that those coming for the music request a table on the lower floor instead of the upper tier, where servers and other guests create a constant stream of pedestrians between your table and the stage.

If I have one complaint, it's that on two of our three visits we sat adjacent to other guests who felt the need to raise their voices so that their dining companions (and everyone else seated nearby) could hear them over the live music. A jazz club isn't a concert hall, so it's reasonable to expect the low buzz of conversation during the sets, but this went well beyond that. Given that a lot of folks clearly come to Blue LLama primarily to eat and socialize, not listen to the music, this may be something that management feels it can't (or shouldn't) address. But it may also drive you batty if you're a jazz fan seated next to one of these loud monologuists at the next table.

Responded on June 18, 2019

I am very excited about this new venue in Ann Arbor. We visit a lot of places downtown on our date nights, and this is the closest "big city" venue we've experienced. I just hope it's sustainable (more on that later).
It is a stunningly beautiful space ... a "starry night" celing painted midnight blue with twinkling lights, and gorgeous wood accents throughout. The jazz was good on the two weeknights we've made it in; have not yet had a chance to see weekend headliners, when it's harder to get a reservation and the bar is always full.
Most of the food we had was outstanding: high quality cheese plate with frozen house-smoked grapes (unique and mind-blowingly good), beet (not beef!) carpaccio, poached egg and chorizo on smoked potatoes were all delicious. Presentations were exquisite. (Chicken roulade was just okay and small, and the most expensive at $24.)
So that brings us to price. It's all small plates; we probably spent about $70 on those four (alcohol extra of course) and were hungry within an hour of getting home. The wine options are wonderful, but trend toward higher prices for Ann Arbor. Looking around, we noticed a lot of people who were watching the jazz were just drinking beers.
There is clearly a very talented chef here; high-end, modern food above the quality of most "destination" Ann Arbor restaurants. But given our humble city, my guess is that adustments will need to be made for long-term sustainability, as this ain't Chicago's Gold Coast or the Upper West Side of Manhattan. A great place to start might be by increasing the portion sizes on some of the more expensive plates.

Blue Llama is the first place I've been in 3 years that has reasonably-priced AMAZING food. We got the tasting menu and were in awe at every single dish.
