Blue Cat Steak & Wine Bar Ratings and Reviews
I like dining here, this is my 3rd visit.
The food is good, with creative choices and the service is friendly. You feel yourself relaxing as you sit down and peruse the menu.
We ordered the cheese plate appetizer with interesting tastes of chili cheddar, blue, ‘plain’ cheddar, and a soft Brie type. Hummus and pita bread are complimentary.
I ordered an Old Fashion with a touch of maple - it’s very good.
We 3 had Caesar salads, which my daughter remembered from our visit last year.
Our reservations were for 6:30 but the 2 orders of filet mignon were the last 2 filets. I ordered the chicken which I have had before.
These orders took 25-30 minutes to arrive and the taste of filet that I had was only ‘warm’. My chicken on the other hand was piping hot. I asked my companions if they wanted their steaks heated up but they both declined. Not sure why they weren’t served hot (I’m familiar with ‘resting’ and don’t believe that was the reason). The filets did taste delicious.
I was comfortabley full and was planning on passing up desert - until I heard ‘cherry pie with a scoop of ice cream’. I made room and it was delicious.
I will be back.
Only 2 people working who had to do hostess, waiter, bartender, water roles. Did not show us the bottle of $75 wine before uncorking or let us taste it before decantering it. Food was good but arrived tepid (& that is being generous with estimating temperatures). Steaks OK but nothing great. Overall, save your $ for someplace else, go here for glass of wine & app.
The restaurant is a bit hidden in a building that looks like an office building. The dining room is small, but cozy and it has potential. Unfortunately, the staff- which consisted of two people- the waitress and the bartender, were unhospitable, verging on rude at times. When we first walked in we were not greeted with a hello or a welcome, but with "do you have a reservation?!!". We did arrive about twenty minutes before our reservation time, figuring we would have a drink at the bar, since they bill themselves as a wine bar. We were rudely told that "our table wasn't ready and we would just have to wait". We sat down at the bar and again the first thing we were greeted with was "do you have a reservation?!". We confirmed, only to have the bartender walk away and not return for ten minutes to ask if we would like anything. We were finally sat at our table ten minutes after our reservation time, which is fine, except the table had been empty for twenty minutes, but the waitress, who was clearly stressed, couldn't get to it to reset it.
She took our order, then we waited. And waited. The dinners took much longer than they should have. The food was ok, nothing special, but not terrible. There are so many other choices in Burlington with great food and service. We will not be returning to this one.
If they want to compete in this city, they need to up the level of service and food quality. And maybe a lesson in courtesy!
Steak was fine. My wife's dish was fine. But at $32 for a petite slice of beef plus $6 for a sauce, we were both expecting better than "fine". There was no love or originality in their dishes. The next night, we ate at a different place in Burlington --- creative sauces, great flavors, lovely service, special care, at 40% less and better ambience.
Blue Cat is a gem hiding in Burlington. The food is creative and eclectic. We ordered the cheese plate and ribs for apps. The ribs had a delicious smokey flavor, nothing like typical BBQ ribs. The rack of lamb was perfectly cooked. The ravioli special in a balsamic glaze was a perfect blend of flavors. I will definitely go back.
October 25, 2017 - So sad to hear comments from all of my (12) guests (as the restaurant has so much character); the food was good, but the service was terrible and slow. Guests had to go to the bar to get their owns drinks. There were (12) in our party and a party of (10) beside us. Our reservation was for 5:30, but didn't leave until after 10:00. The reservation was done far enough in advance where they could of hired more help for the evening, knowing that they were going to be busy. Comments on the food were: the steak was very good, one dinner was cold and another stated his Salmon was overcooked. With disappointment, I will not reserve or suggest this restaurant to anyone. :(
Made a reservation a week in advance to Blue Cat because it was leaf peeping season in VT and I wanted to secure a spot for us to have dinner. When we got there, it was apparent they were short staffed because the hostess was also 1 of 2 waitresses/waitors and the bartender. We were finally seated and they took our drink orders almost immediately, which I was thankful for. The couple to our left started chatting with us about how they love this restaurant and come back for big occasions (like their wedding anniversary and birthdays) even though they live in NJ, so I figured it had to be promising. But then they mentioned they had been waiting for their meal for an hour and a half -- and when the meal finally came it was cold. They were displeased and made it well-known. Our food came within 45 mins, so no complaints there, but the plating was messy and just unoriginal. I didn't feel like it was worth the $$ or the yelp reviews, but it was a fine meal - just nothing that I would rave home about. Service needs a serious upgrade and the lighting could be a bit brighter, especially since the restaurant is situated in a building with no windows to the outdoor light. They were also out of 3 entrees on the menu, which is odd especially since the restaurant was packed.
Second time here and very disappointed. In 90 minutes we got one drink and our salads. Service was extremely slow and the place was very busy. When we finally got our food it was cold. Unfortunately we were celebrating a birthday and our Anniversary and the experience wasn't good. This place needs more staff and needs to manage their food orders better. The specials were listed but they ran out of 3 of them by 6pm. Sadly we will not be returning, just a disappointment.
Lovely little restaurant in a nice setting in downtown Burlington. The restaurant is a small and intimate setting. There was only one waitress and this was some of the most efficient service I have experienced - attentive without being overbearing. The food was perfectly cooked as per our respective orders, seasoned perfectly and delicious. I had the rack of lamb with garlic mashed potatoes. My husband has the NY strip with mashed potatoes, herbed butter and brandied mushroom sauce. Both superb! A starter, the two main meals, one glass of prosecco, a soda and a bottle of water was $123 (excl tip). The restaurant has a parking space available next to the building - you need to get a parking permit from the restaurant to display in your car. The food was well worth the price and we will go back when we are in VT again.
Small and outdated in decor. We were seated almost immediately to a small corner table. Server took a moment to greet us, he seemed to be a bit disorganized and kept flipping his hair while at our table. Took quite some time to receive our drinks. Ordered a salad and along came the fruit flies with it. Totally disgusting. Moved a piece of lettuce and a small little fly flew out at me. Needless to say we did not finish the salad. Main entrees came out and one steak was ordered medium, one medium rare. Steaks were cooked opposite to what they were ordered. Not impressed by this place one bit and will not be interested in going back.
We had a show to see at 7:30 thought a 5:30 reservists would have been plenty of time, It wasn’t . We got our food at 7:20. My soup was like warm at best so I gave it back. When we got the bill they charged me for the soup I didn’t eat. I had a coupon for $40 which she didn’t take off our bill and because there was 6 of us we all got charged the 30% gratuity. Service was fair to poor. VERY DISAPPOINTED.
One of our all-time favorite spots for dinner. We had tickets at the Flynn, and service was very prompt, allowing us to get there on time. The menu has several outstanding choices, and the food is delicious. My wife and I often order different entrees and share.
Our waitress was very attentive, but not overly. The staff is friendly, and they know what they're talking about. The prices are very reasonable when you factor in the entire experience.
When we are looking for a really nice evening out, we come here.
They were clearly understaffed and let us know that right up front. We were not in a hurry, so we were OK with that. The food was excellent. It's small and we were a little cramped, but I would go back. We had a Jump-on-it discount coupon which knocked $15 off the bill which added to the "value" rating. They also gave us a $10 coupon for a future visit to thank us for our patience. Overall it was a nice experience.
What a fantastic find. Arrived in Burlington on a delayed flight and checked into our hotel and I asked Seri to find me a great restaurant. .2 miles from the hotel and we loved it. I will be back from Charleston SC where we have fabulous food but the Blue Cat is one of the best we have ever been to.
thank you for an unforgettable meal.
It was a busy Sunday night at the Blue Cat. None the less, the service was excellent as always. Everyone in our party enjoyed the meal. Steaks were prepared just as ordered. I had the NY strip which was a bone-in cut. One of the best I've ever had. The Rutherford Cabernet was a perfect compliment to the meal.
In town for my anniversary. Did a little research before heading up to Vermont and landed on Blue Cat. I wanted a place we could get a good bottle of wine and a decent steak in a comfortable yet romantic setting for our anniversary dinner and Blue Cat did not disappoint! The ambiance was cozy, dim and romantic with rustic decor. I ordered the bone-in NY Strip, which came with a side of cooked greens and garlic potatoes. The greens alone were incredible, my steak was fantastic. I would equate this location to Gibbet Hill back home in Massachusetts. Best to limit yourself to a small party - it's a small restaurant but worth it. It can be tough to find, we circled the block before finding the entrance. Grant yourself enough time to locate it!
Our entrees took way too long. Didn't know why because the place didn't seem that full. I don't fault our waitress because you can't bring the food out until the kitchen produces it. Other than that, nice atmosphere, delicious food and wine. I'm hoping the long wait was an exception, I'm not giving up on The Blue Cat.
Unfortunately there was one waitress for all the tables and bar on a Friday night. She completely ignored our table and went to the table next to us (who sat after we did) twice before coming to us. They ate and had desert 30 minutes before we even got our dinner. It took over 2 hours to get our meal. 7:15 reservation, we ate after 9:00 Cute place and good food, a bit overpriced. It's unfortunate the running of the place clearly needs some work.
We found out about this restaurant from the bartender at our hotel. Blue Cat is tucked away inside an otherwise nondescript building so you have to know where you are going but once you find it, you will be greeted by friendly staff and quickly lead to your table. The location only holds about 15 tables so it is cozy. The decor is nice and the music is well selected and played at a suitable level so you can have a conversation with your table mates. Our waitress knew the wine list well and allowed me to taste a few options before I made my selection. This was a nice touch !
My wife ordered the filet mignon and found it tender but lacking flavor. Perhaps horseradish sauce would have been a help. I ordered the ribeye and found it rather tough. Instead of a nice marbling of fat, my steak contained a lot of tendon that was not edible. My son's ribeye was the same as mine. We ordered a side of cream sauce to share that contained locally sourced chanterelle mushrooms for $10 but received a $3 serving size. While flavorful, the portion size did not fit the price tag. The garlic mashed potatoes were good and grilled asparagus was prepared well but a couple more stalks (we each got three) would have been nice.
If you are looking for a cozy place with a nice wine list and friendly & helpful staff, this is a good choice - just be prepared to pay handsomely. If you are looking for Chicago quality steak, you'll have to get on an airplane.
First of all, there were normal tables free, even we left, but they put us in a minuscule table with very uncomfortable chairs. The environment tried to be European but missed the point.... said by one European....just poor illumination and red curtains doesn't make a local "European"
Waitress was robotic, saying 'learnt' sentences without really listening or establishing a conversation. She mistook the wine and every time she left there were at least 5 minutes before she was back....and there were a total of 5 tables with people
We await 55 minutes for our food, basically steaks, and the people on the table close to us awaited almost one hour and half.
Food was good, not wow, but for then our experience was ruined. Just wanted to eat, pay and go.
There are much nicer places in the area.
