We love Blue Cat. New Year's Eve dinner. First time in since Covid shut down. Love the decor and the atmosphere. Always so warm and cozy with the dark wood and the elegant table settings. Food was very good. Appetizers were delicious. Everyone's steak was cooked as ordered. The salmon was delicious; beautiful lemon sauce. Minimal staffing as would be expected. Very friendly and knowledgeable. They did a great job during these very stressful times.
Phenomenal experience! The food was superb with a cozy, eclectic and artistic atmosphere. It reminded my husband and I of the prohibition speakeasy you see in the movies.
The staff was very attentive and described offerings in detail and answered any questions we had. I hate to mention it, but my only critique would be that 2 of the staff were having a disagreement about where to seat a party which I didn't feel should be on the floor; however, we thought it was sweet that the staff are so concerned with even something as simple as seating arrangements that they needed a discussion.
The beef Wellington special was spot on - my applause to the chef! Please try the Blue Cat if you haven't but give yourself some time. Everything is done to perfection and that takes precision so we started with cocktails and an appetizer to occupy ourselves before the meals.
We are definitely going back to try something else since our drinks, palate teaser, appetizer, sides and desserts were all top notch as well. The flourless cake was "DE-LUCIOUS" (had to invent a word to explain HOW good it was) and just the right portion. BRAVO!
Great staff and very good food. Cooked perfectly.
We were so happy that they were open for Christmas. We really enjoyed ourselves
We enjoyed the beef Wellington, planned for Christmas Eve. It was a 3 course dinner with wine pairing. Fantastic.
Loved the ambiance, service and especially the food! We had the filet mignon and salmon and shared the cheese plate to start. Wonderful
time! Especially appreciated the attentive and friendly service and the charming music (Sinatra and his best contemporaries!). Highly recommend!
Service was not up to par unfortunately. Small staff seemed uninformed and in informative, menu was not accurate, offered house app was served 25 minutes into sitting down, food took well over an hour to be served staff checked in with us about 3 bites from finishing and were only attentive when it was time to pay. Wanted to like it , food was decent, undercooked vegetables, under seasoned sides, entree was cooked nicely, but overall was not impressed. Value compared to experience just weren’t equal
The waitresses were extremely rude. First they avoided coming to the table when our party was trying to order more drinks. There was a total of 5 tables seated, one table just finishing their meal. When asking one of the waitresses how long it was going to be for the food, as it was taking over 45 minutes, she started yelling and talked loudly with another waitress about how rude it was of us to even ask. When the food arrived to the table, the lamb was completely raw and it took another 10 minutes to get it back to the table. Overall, awful experience between the wait staff and the food. Will not be returning.
I usually do not write reviews but this experience was rough. I understand that wait staff is limited, supply chain is challenging, etc. but at some somepoint a business needs to take some responsibility for their presumed "higher end" dining experience. Setting: My wife and I and one other couple, on a early Friday night. Service: Soooo slow, we were there for over 2 hours, waitress was a nice person but undertrained for a place that tries to position itself as a medium to higher level place to dine. Food: Meh, I've had worse, I've had much better given the pricing of things, again I understand everything costs more these days but give me a break. Will we go again? Noooooo....
Maria was great given they were short on staff
Wow....Most of us going out these days have compassion for the folks managing the complexities of maintaining an establishment during COVID times. That said, there comes a time when you have to pack it in. Aside from the beautiful ambience, Blue Cat is a shell of an establishment...with servers walking razor thin lines between politeness and resentment, wait times that defy the definition of "casual dining", and food quality that leaves you wondering why you were suckered into waiting in the first place. Sorry guys.....grim.
i hardly ever write reviews. this was appalling on every level. short-staffed to the point where they couldn't serve, for hours. no professional waitstaff, no warning, no advisory, nothing offered after unable to bring cheese plate app for 2 hours. after drink took almost an hour. seriously. asked for no cream on salmon, diff prep pls; was brought tiny piece with dipping cup of vinegar. mmm.
refuse to serve at bar; cram diners into small tables on top of each other. insane. pandemic anyone? time to turn the place over to successful professional restaurateurs... became obvious quickly why this was the only local spot with an open table on open table.
update: booked en route from boston, b4 reading other reviews. offensive service is their hallmark, nice! [not]
rude and self absorbed young standout who should under no circumstances be involved with the public. unless as a shaming shock jock comic at a howard stern club.
Fabulous food and terrific service!!
Never ate. Waited 25 for water and then left
Long wait despite that the place was practically empty... when asking about our order after an hours wait we were cut off by waitress: " this is a fine dining restaurant not a fast food place."
The food was mediocre.
Had a rather unfortunate overall experience at Blue Cat, and I would not return. The problem was with the service and the management of the restaurant.
When we arrived for our reservation (early evening), we were only the second table in the place. The first table had ordered but was awaiting food. We ordered our entrees (two steaks medium rare, no appetizers). We sat for nearly 45 minutes, waiting for food. The first table received their food after a similarly long wait. I asked the server whether our food was coming soon, since it had been close to 45 minutes and it simply doesn't take that long to cook a medium rare steak. I was then "schooled" by the server on the fact that they had to cook other food for other tables in the appropriate order (again, there was only one other two-top - they were not at all busy, though some tables were starting to arrive) and that it had in fact "only been 36 minutes" (because she marks down the time of each order) and that if we wanted fast food, there were plenty of other places in town that would accommodate us, etc. I was appalled. I made my living as a waiter for many years and would never have treated a customer in such a manner. They clearly have no idea about customer service, nor pacing of a meal when it is clear that the customer will not be indulging in multiple courses.
We went here for our anniversary and we were impressed. The prices are on the more expensive side, but we were very impressed with the staff, service, and quality of the food we were served.
It was an anniversary dinner. I understand with Covid staffing is a challenge, but service was not great. The customer greeting was subpar. The food was not great and I even had a insect in my salad! The quality of the food versus the value was definitely off! We ended up leaving Blue Cat and going to Vermont Brewery to get better food and beer. Very disappointed with our experience.
Excellent service and food!
We ate here on a busy Friday night in Sept. Despite the crowds in town, this place was quiet. Service was prompt and the food was good. We had salmon and lamb for main course and they were nicely prepared. The lamb could have done with more seasoning and flavor but the accompanying vegetables were perfect. One minor gripe is the with only 4 people in the place, the background piped jazz was a big overwhelming and could have been lowered a bit. All in all, satisfactory but a little pricey for what you get.
The steak was delicious & there is a nice wine selection. Pleasant, competent staff.
food, atmosphere and service were fantastic! Would highly recommend for a nice dinner out in burlington.
Overall average experience. There was only one waitress working and she did a good job. Definitely a step down from an upscale steakhouse. The menu was tiny and the only three or four wines were available by the glass unless you wanted to pay $40 or more for a bottle. Seats were ok, not very comfortable. 7/10 stars. Small portions and overpriced. Would probably not go back
We have been away from Burlington for a decade, and now we are back. So happy this tucked away restaurant is still here! Food and ambiance were outstanding. The only tiny problem is it appears there is only a 2 person team, one person to cook and one person to do face-to-face with diners. So if you are in a time crunch, pick another night where you can stretch the experience out as long as you like. Still, this is one of Burlington's best, in a city that has lots of wonderful choices. Ssssh, only share with your favorite foodies! :)
While the ambiance and service were okay this was one of the worst dinners I have paid for in a long time. I can make better food at home. The veggies were frozen and steamed, my steak was cooked incorrectly, and there was nothing garlic about the bland stuff mashed potatoes.
Friendly but thinly staffed service. Liked outside space but as warned by waiter. Next door band was Very loud. Food tasty.
We should have had a clue when over an hour in we had only complimentary burnt (I'm talking CHARCOAL) pita, hummus and garlic pickle chunks. Brianne, our server delivered the plate immediately after eating a meal with her fingers and licking each one following a few vape puffs.
Salads came about 1/2 an hour later. According to the menu, the blue cheese salad was to come with walnuts. Instead, cashews were scattered on top, which I am allergic to. Brianne assured me that cashews were supposed to be included and took it away. (Not according to the menu!) By the time my new salad arrived and plunked down in front of me with a resounding "A salad with NO nuts at all!" from Brianne, my husband had finished his drowned-in-dressing Caesar.
A good 40 minutes later, our entrees arrived. My salmon was moist and flavorful, my vegetables ("sauteed" broccoli and carrots) were part cooked, part crunchy (microwaved?) while garlic mashed potatoes were oversalted, but good enough. My husband's entire meal of strip steak with blue cheese, the same veggies and garlic mashed was cold. A trip to the microwave warmed it, but for ~$37, the thin, grisly steak was pathetic.
The restaurant is cozy, bordering on cramped, but has SO much potential. The lamb rack and cheese plate looked so inviting! To be fair, our two drinks were comped and Brianne had to take care of tables both inside and out, which seemed overwhelming.
In the days winding down from a pandemic, it was rich to hear Brianne tell parties to separate with a table in between and watch her use her arms to shoo a party of two out of the restaurant after watching her "finger licking good" routine. A little education or visit from the Health Department would likely go a long way. I don't know if a large nose ring is allowed while serving food, but maybe playing with it can wait until the end of the shift.
Server spent much of the evening complaining of being overstretched but when told that we were dissatisfied with the speed of service tried to make out it was “deliberately unrushed”. Personally my preference in being unrushed is to have the food and eat it at my leisure, not wait over an hour for my main. Sadly the quality of the food didn’t merit the delay; a strange anomaly in such a gastronomically excellent city.
We are traveling the New England states and while in Burlington VT we selected the Blue Cat based on its ratings. It was fabulous and Maria did a fabulous job keeping everyone happy! Outstanding job! Highly recommend!
Small restaurant with a small overworked staff. My guess is there was one person working in the kitchen and just one waitress. It took a long time to get our food. The Caesar salad and curried mussels were quite good. However the strip steak was thin and gristly. The potatoes were cold. We waited so long to get our meal that we just ate it without sending it back. With so many options in Burlington I can’t recommend this restaurant.
Food was well prepared and very flavorful!
Chris was awesome! Very helpful and informative and explained the menu.
Everyone that works here was super friendly and terrific. Food was average, expected better.
Food was bland and unimaginative -everything could have easily been made at home. The $38 sirloin came with three spears of grilled asparagus and a puddle of what was billed as garlic mashed potatoes that looked and tested like they came out of a box with garlic powder thrown in. There was just one server who was also the hostess and bartender, which slowed things down a lot, despite there being only 2-3 occupied tables at a time. Worst part was it seemed like she really didn’t want to be there, nor much interest in providing good customer service. Maybe just an off night, but there are plenty of other restaurants in town that are far from a waste of money.
Disappointed in the food quality—potatoes tasted like instant and were cold, a d the shrimp in the salad was still frozen. There was only one other couple in the restaurant and it took 50 minutes to get the food. The steak was good, though.
Good food and atmosphere! Service was excellent! It is a unique little steak and wine bar tucked into Burlington.
I went here with my family and the ambiance was great. Small and quaint. Very good red wine selection. The food was good, perhaps overpriced, but we had a great time overall.
Very pleasant atmosphere, we were outside and there was live music. If you’re very hungry, have a light snack before, because the wait was on the longer side.
We always choose Blue Cat for a special occasion. Love the food, wine, service, decor, etc. This time was excellent!
