The pyramid of tartar is the best thing ever! A really cute spot for ladies night!
Food was decent, but the service was so bad I will not be returning any time soon.
Blowfish never disappoints. We've worked our way through a lot of the menu. Everything has been wonderful!
Sushi was fresh and good. We want for restaurant week and a fixed price menu. A good way to try the sushi.
What happened to Blowfish? The waiter said the tables were sticky and everything was beat up because it is a 29 yr old restaurant & they are getting ready to renovate. That does not account for being served on dirty dishes, the bathroom. Ring disgusting and dirty, the poor service, and the mediocre food. I've been coming there for almost 20 yrs. I even had a special discount card because I was such a regular at one point. So sad to see the mighty fall.
We were seated late for out reservation by a half an hour. Appetizers arrived after the first course. Music was a nice touch but too loud. The food was OK compared to the last time we ate there. Service was painfully slow for 8 o'clock on a Wednesday.
The food is awesome every time we go to Blowfish and it's so fresh!
If you want to see your waitress once in a hour come here! I ordered a drink with my appetizer and was halfway through my entree when it arrived. Don't waste your time if you're thirsty.
My friends and I all did the SF Restaurant week deal. The food was amazing! The fish was very fresh and melted in our mouths. We had a great time and the live music definitely fit the restaurant's classy, but lightly casual ambiance.
Unfortunately, it was very busy in the restaurant and there were only a few servers. We waited at least 20 minutes per dish, so our four course dinner took about 2 hours to come out. They also ran out of both dessert options (cheesecake and mochi) and were served icecream instead. The icecream was very good though; the perfect blend of matcha and creaminess.
It was a really nice experience and the food was delicious! We went for the SF restaurant week so we had a three course lunch. They had such an amazing presentation for each of the courses and the food themselves were super tasty and fresh.
Went there for restaurant week expecting a great experience. The hostess was dismissive when we arrived. It took the waiter ~15 minutes to get to us after we were seated & another 10 before he took our order. We ordered tea which took an additional 20 minutes to arrive (first cup was good but the rest was extremely bitter). The first course didn't arrive until we had been sitting for over an hour. The 3rd and 4th course were good but the first 2 weren't very impressive at all. We were there for 2.5 hours (7:30PM-10PM) - I expect better service for restaurant week. Very disappointing. I don't think I'll be back anytime soon.
I went there because of the SF restaurant week. they have a special meun for that. Food quality is not bad, but I think is a rip off. I don't recommend the special menu.
Good pacing to checking in on us throughout the meal, cordial waitstaff demeanor, always fun to watch chefs prep sushi, good music selection, great lighting/ambience.
The Crunchy Pork is to die for!! Amazing flavor, and it was a huge portion. We also had The punch that I wasn't very impressed with the flavor, but the portion size was great and my companions liked it. The Skirt Steak was very tender full of flavor and the potatoes were a bit sinful. I over heard some guest next to our table raving about the edamame, but my partner doesn't eat soy so we skipped it that time. The service staff was very friendly and left us alone just enough so that we felt taken care of and not over bearing. I will definitely be heading back again and again if this visit is what i can expect every time.
I've never had a bad meal here. Everything is so fresh and looks and good as it tastes.
Sushi average for the price. Fish decent quality but too much seasoning in the rice. Service terrible!
Blowfish is an oldie but goodie in the increasingly budding Japanese/sushi dining scene. Very unique fusion style dishes, some of the highlights from our dining experience were: the Volcano Shrimp Toast, Pyramid of Tartar, and the Toshi Koshi. Oyster shooters were also quite nice! Service left a little to be desired, not the most attentive, but still a good dining experience overall. Would definitely come back if in the area.
A little out of the way by 15 minute if you're in downtown San Fran, but well worth it. The place is fun and full of energy. The service was really good and attentive. The sushi offered a wide variety of your typical offerings mixed with some fantastic unique/creative dishes. We absolutely loved it!
The fish is just not very good. While some dishes are good but most always disappoint. We live across the street so we've probably given it more tries than deserved. It used to be so much better back when I first started going to it in early 2000's but the last few years have been very disappointing. The tables feel sticky and dirty. The rice in the nigri is not seasoned and cooked the way good sushi restaurants make it (basically, the rice falls apart when you try to pick it up). It doesn't have the subtle sweet vinegar flavor and overcooked. For what they charge, feel overpriced every time we go. My husband hates going there but I keep pushing for it because its so easy to cross the street. But after the last visit, two days ago, I've finally said enough.
I was looking for a restaurant to grab a quick lunch on my way to the airport. I'm glad I selected Blowfish Sushi - SF. The restaurant has the correct balance of contemporary and comfort making for a great place for small groups or individual dining. The sushi was very fresh and the selection of appetizers and the menu itself was creative and explored new areas of fusion and traditional Japanese. The wait staff person was friendly, efficient, and the service was excellent. I felt welcomed even though on this occasion I was a solo diner. It is a busy place but I had no wait for my mid-afternoon lunch. First rate overall.
The large sashimi assortment, which is served over dry ice, is one best I've had!
Let's just say do not order raw meals here
I recommend Blowfish have service with quicker attention to customers. I understand it must be a neiborhood restaurant, but for new customers and out-of-towners, this place should be a better experience. It is too far out of the center, for how pricy it is. Make it worth for people to go all the way there. Food is great, but we sat there for 2.5 hours.
First time here. The food was excellent. I personally am not a raw fish eater but occasionally will try
Amazing nigiri. The fusion rolls did not exactly fit my taste but were well made.
This was our 3rd time here, and it never fails the impress. The sushi was fresh and the sake was nice and warm. We enjoyed the specials as well as old faves like the To Die For Roll.
This was my second visit to the restaurant and it was just as good as the first time. Delicious rolls, sashimi and more. Would definitely recommend
I can't recommend this restaurant because when we came there the hostess offered us to take a sit in the bar area while we reserved table in sushi area. It not convenient to have a dinner in the bar.
Everything thing was delicious, and Robbie is a fantastic waiter!!!
Will definitely be back 😍
The noise level was a bit high that night. I barely could hear my date! Food was mediocre at best. The popcorn shrimp salad was ok this time. Shrimp were a little over cooked and a bit small. The salmon nigiri didn't taste fresh as well. It was just ok. Expected better especially for a first date.
Blow Fish provides excellent fresh ingredients in a creative manner that tintillates the palate. It makes you crave for more. The ritsi roll is a keeper.
Always a great eating experience
The service was terrible for a slow Saturday night. You shouldn't have to constantly flag your server down to order another drink or request more dipping sauce. The most disappointing part of the experience was when we were charged $1.00 for the extra dipping sauce (aka soy sauce) and were given the excuse that the only way for the server to get the extra sauce was to enter it , into the computer and therefore charge us for it. After waiting 15 min for it to arrive, it cost us $1.00. Really? I'll pay the $1.00, I'll pay whatever for something special, but bad service on top of average sushi on top of charging extra for soy sauce? Blow me, I mean Blowfish!
Nice ambiance. Cool vibe. But this place is a complete rip off. Rolls are expensive but portions are small. They charge >$15 for "Enchanted Sashimi", when all it is is sashimi put in a sauce with a jalapeno on top. Absurd.
I wouldn't recommend this place unless you want to lose your wallet and leave with an appetite.
The sushi was good, but service was horrible...no excuse to be hot staffed on a Saturday night!!!
Had reservations but still had to wait about 20 mins for a table which defeats the point of reserving ahead. Also, one of the servers spilled a drink on our table and never came back to clean it up.
The food was excellent. Great menu with plenty of choices. Staff was able to give excellent recommendations of items to try.
Was good back in the 1990s when it was somewhat of a scene and symbolic of the transformation of the Mission into a destination for dining. Today it's strictly a faded has-been. Extremely expensive and a poor value due to the overall low quality and small portions. Plan on spending $60-$80 per person without drinks or dessert.
We have enjoyed the food and restaurant ambiance very much. Absolutely amazing sushi, it had all our favorites with a twist of enhanced flavor and food design. Sushi at its best, would dine here anytime again.
Great food. The energy was much much better when there were TV Screens with anime
