Blowfish Sushi - SF Ratings and Reviews
Blowfish confirmed the reservation and even accepted a change to increase the number of diners. Food was excellently presented, tasted great, and the desserts were ery creative. A trendy, friendly restaurant where the staff assisted in selections and recommendations.
Trying to hard to be trendy and unique, and you can't help but wonder that it might be distracting from the food. Drink menu reads like it's fantastic, but the 2 I tried were overly sweet and one-dimensional. Definitely doesn't touch Umami in terms of quality of the rolls.
Even though we made a reservation and arrived on time, we still had to wait 20 minutes while we saw two tables were open. We sat below a speaker and it was so loud that we had to shout at each other. Food is outstanding, but super pricey. One of us ordered a sushi dish for $16 and it came in a huge plate with a martine glass holding some sauce in the middle and literally had 5 very small piece sushi on the realm of one side of plate and it was filled the space with more sauce on the other side. But for dinner set, which there are only two choices (sea bass or beef), the portion is decent. The sea bass was fantastic, but the beef (steak skirt) was dry and rubbery. We also order a sushi roll to share and taht was really good.
We've been dinning here many times. The food and choices doesn't seem to get old. We enjoyed the settings and ambiance of the restaurant. It's very fusion. We recommend starting with the Ritsu Roll and R2 Roll. Very delicious and delightful. A little on the pricey side, but well worth the money, IMO. Enjoy.
We came here because we heard that the decor was nice and they would play techno, but instead of techno they played some slow depressing music. I prefer the Santana Row location much better. The SF venue is just okay - nothing special. Overall, this was somewhat of a disappointment, especially considering my high expectations.
Food was great, but overpriced. I recommend ordering at least 2 items per person plus dessert. I really enjoyed the beignets. They had some pervy animation on the whole time, part of which isnt so appetizing, like watching a fat male cartoon character prance around in a bra and thong.
This place has gone down in quality and service over the years. It used to be a major hot spot, but not longer carries that cache. The sushi was decent, but nowhere near what I would consider excellent. The service was not very good - very slow. This is probably the most overrated sushi place in the city. Save your money and go to Live or Tokyo Go Go.
Great sushi in a funky space with a Japanese manga vibe. We were there at 7:00 which was definitely on the early side for the young clientele this restaurant draws. Our waitperson was very friendly and helpful and didn't seem fazed that we were twice the age of the typical diner.
Sushi was really good. The sashmi platter had an amazing presentation. Our service was "ok". The waiter was not really attentive. When we wanted to order more sushi, he was no where to be found (and the restaurant is not that big) so we went up to get our own menu. Same with when we were looking to pay the bill, waiter was MIA. The guy who topped our water and tea was way more attentive and pleasant.
I read reviews that this place was noisy and busy, so we made a reservation for 5:30, right when they opened. It was great! It was like having a private restaurant all to ourselves. Food was good, a bit expensive, and there were tons of interesting specialty drinks. Really enjoyed the fancy Banana flambe thai iced tea ice cream dessert!
We only waited about 10 minutes for our table when we arrived (and we had a reservation) - good.Food server was friendly and informative - good. Forgot a couple items from our order. Should have comp'ed something (free glass of sake or comp'ed our dessert).Excellent music.Good ambience - love the art & cartoons on TV.Food - decent. Not the best sushi ever but certainly above average. Steak skewer appetisers fantastic.Overall - above average, but not running back for another experience next weekend.
Blowfish is a fantastically fun place to eat. It's a young, hip place with exquisite food and tasty drinks that will set the evening off right. TVs around the place show anime movies to add to the chique and campy fun atmaosphere. The service was excellent, with an easygoing staff that was very attentive throughout the meal. Blowfish is a loud place, but that is simply the nature of the atmosphere they create. Not the place for a quiet romantic dinner. If you're a couple or group out to party, it is perfect.
It was fantastic! I'm a New Yorker who had been to Blow Fish last year based on a recommendation of a friend. This year, when here on business I brought a client who is a self-proclaimed "sushi snob." My client and I were both delighted with the freshness, flavor and original combinations of the sushi. The bartender and our server were both a delight and knew the menu well and were great about offering recomendations that were ALL a hit. I can't wait for my next trip to the Bay area so I can go back again!
Excellent as always. Very high-quality fish, delicious creative dishes that were both skillfully prepared and artistically presented, courteous service. Even the cocktails, which in the past have been hit-or-miss, were consistently delicious. The sometimes-racy Japanese animation on the TVs was amusing as always, and the noise level not too bothersome. The only minor annoyance was the wobbly table. Always impressive, will definitely return.
This specific combination of customer service, ambiance, quality of fish, presentation of dishes, and variety/selection has made Blowfish SF a winner in my book. This place is both intimate and hip. Get the Sosumi Roll and the Sashismi sampler - you won't be disappointed. Nice for tasteful cocktail meet up as well if you are looking in the Potrero/Mission area.
Very good lunch experience- suspect it depends on what you order what is simply good and what is great -perhaps the rolls are more exciting. But didn't make me want to go back for the food particularly. We had a lovely experience but found one dish a disappointment - bland and mushy (pyramid of tuna and avacado) - would have been better simpler and more seasoned. Service was so friendly, place was open and clean and food was fresh, that we had a lovely lunch anyway. Might try it again to see if we can fall in love with the many touted rolls.
