Blowfish Sushi - SF Ratings and Reviews
Life changing foodie experience! Mouth watering dishes include: the classic pyramid tower with the ideal paring of sweet/savory sauces mixed in, the delicious virgin oyster shooters with the delicate quail egg, the perfect hamachi crudo (truly ethereal) and the best tasting miso black cod and creamy risotto. I've been to this restaurant several times, and it never ceases to impress me.
Wait staff was truly professional, knowledgeable and courteous. Frankly, they made the entire evening more enjoyable. The menu item, "to die for," was out of this world, and the desert was as scrumptious as any chocolate after diner desert I have ever experienced.
Inattentive service, long time between dishes arriving at the table. We spent $360. for three people and had to find our waiter to ask for the check. Menu choices range from beautiful, high quality sashimi to elaborate rolls for those who like that style and a nice selection of sake. The menu seems unjustifiably expensive given the food and overall experience. No more fun anime projections on the wall and music was pretty bland until a local DJ started spinning an eclectic mix music.
I've dined out alot in SF and been to alot of Japanese restaurants, and I have to say, this Blowfish restaurant is absolutely towards the BOTTOM. Japanese restaurants aren't known for large portions, but the food portion is extremely small, even for Japanese restaurant standards. Do not go there hungry! On top of that, the prices for food and drinks are way higher than normal!
The service was very slow and the food also came out slow. This occurred when the restaurant was 20-25% full when we arrived. Yes, our waitress was very nice but we def felt neglected. For example: we were looking for the drinks menu during dinner, but our waitress didn't come around for a while, so I asked another waitress if I can see the drink menu. She said sure thing...and never came back. I asked another waitress for the drinks menu...and again she never came back even though she said "of course"! Finally our waitress came around and I finally got to see the drinks menu after asking for it the third time.
I would NOT recommend the restaurant for the food, the price, the slow service, and the small portions. If you must, for whatever reason, go there.... do NOT go hungry. Make sure you eat before you go!
The food here is AMAZING. While I knew the sushi would not disappoint based on friend's recommendations, the star of the evening was the Pyramid of Tartare. I would go back for that alone. Had a 7 pm reservation on a Friday which started out low-key - by the time we left at 9 pm, the place was starting to get real busy! Would return in a heartbeat, even though my teacher income tells me that this should be only a special date night place ;)
I live around the corner, and haven't eaten there in years. I only eat out socially. The food and drinks were outstanding; just as I always remembered. There are so many dining options in my immediate vicinity, and new various types of places, opening (sometimes closing) that I sometimes forget about returning to the original restaurants in this area, when it was a less "happening" neighborhood more than 20 years ago. Blowfish Sushi was a pioneer "happening" place, and I'm glad to see it still is. I will not let so much time pass before my next visit.
I use to love this place. However, in the past few years the quality of the sushi has drastically diminished. There are a bunch of new sushi restaurants in the mission that blow this place out of the water.
The service is the other big downer. The last time I was there the servers argued over who would take our table. After sitting down, we waited about 10 minutes before our server even acknowledged us, although there were only about two other seated tables in the entire restaurant.
Stay away from this place, it's way past its prime and not worth it.
We made a reservation for 6. Service was horrible. We had to constantly ask for our server and it was a business dinner. Super akward. The hostess (equally terrible) said she was "slammed because she had 10 high tops" ... Yet she always seemed to pop out of a door marked "private". Then they forced a 20% tip for crap service, no thanks. Never again.
If you're going to sit at a table, seriously consider some place else. If you're going to the sushi bar, enjoy!
Blowfish sushi has delicious sushi. The ambience is fun and vibrant. The service is incredibly slow (we waited 15 minutes for our first order of drinks) and the portions ridiculous. A sashimi plate with a whopping price tag of $34 dollars had maybe 10 pieces of a sashimi on it. That isn't a lot of fun.
Happy to have found any Inner Mission restaurant that would take a same-day Friday night reservation for two. Kinda disappointing first-time visit. Server was very busy but attentive and friendly. Food was just so-so. Fish was fresh enough - rice w/ rolls and nigiri was a soggy, sticky mess. Seaweed salad was gloppy and gelatinous.
