Blackfriars is located in a 13th century medieval friary where it once served as the refectory for the Dominican friars, making it one of the oldest purpose-built dining rooms in the UK.

The restaurant serves a classic, gutsy British menu sourcing seasonal produce from local farms and markets accompanied by a large award-winning wine list. It also has an adjoining 50-seat Banquet Hall for private parties and weddings and above the restaurant is a Cookery School and Wine/Beer/Whisky Tasting Room. Blackfriars has won a host of awards including The Taste of the North East winner in the North East Tourism Awards, Best Sunday Lunch in Newcastle by readers of the Independent, Best restaurant in the North East/Newcastle’ by readers of The Observer and Metro Newspaper. It has an AA rosette, inclusion in the Which? Good Food Guide, Hardens and Michelin Guides.

You will learn to make a classic street food dish that can take you to the streets of Bangkok or Mumbai and back, prepared at your very own individual workstation. This workshop takes on spicy Chinese classic: Chongqing noodles. Located in one of the hottest areas of China Chongqing is renowned for its spicy food. Learn how to combine these traditional Chinese spices with egg noodles and an unctuous meat soup all topped with fried soy beans and beef.

Join us for an evening of top drawer cheeses and fabulous wines all perfectly paired. Progress through from lighter to the more robust whilst discussing their merits and searching for those matches made in heaven. Enjoy a glass of fizz on arrival followed by 5 wine and cheese pairings. Oh, and not a pineapple stick or vol-au-vent in sight!

    Blackfriars afternoon tea includes homemade sandwiches and pastries, freshly made scones and cakes along with a cup of tea/coffee. Afternoon Tea is served Friday and Saturday between 2.45-4.30pm and must be reserved and pre-paid at least 24 hours in advance. Please contact us directly if you have a voucher to use. We’re happy to offer gluten-free and vegetarian options with 48 hours’ notice. However, due to the nature of our menu, we’re unable to accommodate other dietaries, dietary requirements or substitutions. Afternoon Tea may be served in our King's Suite, which is located on the first floor. If you require a more accessible table, please get in touch to let us know.

    We loved the dim sum cooking class! Emma and Chloe were great. The amount of food you get makes it well worth your money, our freezer is stuffed with gyoza.

    Gorgeous restaurant, in an historical setting. The decor is very tastefully done to match the the character and feel of the building. Front of house staff were very friendly, helpful and attentive. Food was absolutely outstanding, and my wife opted for the wine pairing which was perfect with her menu choices. The set price lunchtime menu is really good value for the quality and service, and would highly recommend.

    My friend and I attended the tapas making course. It was wonderful. The morning was so well organised. The chef who led the course was super friendly and helpful. I learnt lots of new techniques and made delicious food. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and will most certainly return.

    Food wasn't very warm, service was slow, pre-ordered drinks but didn't receive them until after 20 minutes when asked what we would like to drink - wasn't impressed.
