Blackbird Public House & Oyster Bar Ratings and Reviews
Lunch is always good. Food, service, atmosphere is always welcoming. The bars however could be better. Whenever I've arrived with friends, everything is very compartmentalized. I understand there are bars taht serve different purposes but it's not very welcoming and has the potential to have better seating.
The food I ordered came out cold along with the bowl it was placed in so the server ordered me a new one and the second one came out cold so I'm not sure if they actually made a new one or just decided to give me the same bowl but either way the staff in the kitchen need a lesson on what the temperature of the dishes and food should be!!!
This restaurant was fairly empty for a Saturday. We did see a steady stream of people going upstairs to the bar ... We could hear the music and noise which made us feel like we were missing out on something.
We were there for dine out. Our appetizer had amazing flavour and were excited for the next course. My husband's phyllo wrapped cheese with broccoli dish was amazing. I was disappointed in my fish .., very bland and no flavour. The staff was nice enough to bring me something else .. So I order the blackened chicken burger with fries which ended up being a plain chicken burger and salad because of my gluten allergy. The burger was also really bland.
We order the citrus creme brûlée ... Amazing in every way.
Overall not impressed with the lack of flavor. Even gluten allergic people like their food to have flavour!
Great location and staff was attentive but was surprised by the mediocre food and poor menu. For a group that calls themselves an oyster bar there is nothing outside of raw oysters. I would expect a few other sections (Rockefeller, oyster sandwich etc.). Needs a complete revamp of the menu or in my opinion there will be a new restaurant there in a year. If your Vegetarian or Vegan go elsewhere. Terrible over priced vegetarian sandwich and salads looked unappealing.
Dozens of options in the area, do yourself a favor and go somewhere else.
Had drinks here but not dinner. So this time we went there and tried their Vancouver Dine Out Menu. I had the ceasar baby kale salad, the ling cod and their tiramisu. The salad was not presentable as it was served in a small tiny bowl with zero decoration. Basically, it was just a bowl of green leafs that taste ok. I liked the sauce with the fish but I didn't really enjoy the fish as it was kinda overcooked. The best I would say is the dessert. You can't really go wrong with Tiramisu. I think I would not come back for dinner but I would definitely come here for their happy hour (three to six daily). You get the downtown vibe with big TVs, $3 wine, $5 beer etc. Sounds good right? Cheers!
This restaurant is located in the financial district and I felt this oyster bar/restaurant is probably very bustling from 5-7pm on the weekdays. but probably not too much business after 7pm.....I only went to this restaurant because it was in the dine out program and I always want to try new places. Surprisingly my dinner was quite good and I would try it again in the future.
I went here with my gf for the dineout menu. Felt like some oysters so decided to come here. The oyster appetizer was fantastic. It was just what we wanted to satisfy the oyster craving. However, the mains were not that great. Maybe it's a difference in standards of how rice should be cooked between Asians and local Canadians, but I do not like my curry chicken rice drenched in a layer of some sort of watery soup (that's not even curry-flavored). The curry sauce was a little dry for me, not as creamy as I usually like. The dessert however was pretty good. The creme brulee really hit the spot for me.
Despite the bad main, I looked at their regular menu and noticed their regular menu seemed more like bar food menu. I will leave this overall at a 4 stars until I try the regular menu and make adjustments.
My friend and I passed by this place the other day and we decided to try out their dine out menu, turned out to be so disappointed. The appetizers were okay, entrees were mediocre and desserts were the worst part...creme brulee and tiramisu didn't taste like what they should be, seemed like they added them into the menu just for the sake. Won't visit this place again.
This was my 2nd time here and completely different from the 1st. The 1st time it was later in the evening and we had the best cocktails and appetizers and our server was fantastic. Admittedly, the game was on the 2nd time, but it was very loud. The service was just ok, but that was mostly because they were so busy and it was very hard to communicate. The food was good, all be it a bit slow, but we were not in a hurry. We were originally interested in some oysters but their prices are high compared to the rest of the city.
Would I recommend Blackbird? It would be dependent on what you were looking for and the time you were going. Early is good for a beer with group of friends after work and late is good for cocktails and conversation.
This is my 2nd visit there - I tried the Reuban sandwich and it was really good, my friend had the burger and it had a ridiculous sized piece of iceburg lettuce on it so that didn't really look like anything special to be, as always though the fries are fantastic!
Sunday night before Xmas.Kiwi family on holiday and meeting local friends.Donnelly Group restaurants seemed to have a good reputation and Blackbird was close to our hotel.But..
Hmmm...nobody else downstairs on arrival at 7pm..
Offered three types of oysters but delivered two....
Waiter thought every beer, cocktail or wine we chose was his favourite...
Consistently spilt the red wine on the tablecloth as he poured...no twisting technique....very embarrassing
And portions on the small side..
Flagged the dessert
Evening not really saved by excellent whiskey at the finish.
I especially ask for a quiet table in my online reservation and I did not feel that I got listened. The music was quiet load for lunch time.
Food wise - The cook need to learn how to cook fries - they were over cooked and I they were quiet small like tiny bit of fries. not enjoyable.
Also, what is so hard to serve fries and salad half/half in the plate - really !!!
Blackened chicken breast was also over cook.
And over all the food, fries included were coldish.
You got the location, please line up the food for the price you charge.
I ordered the omelette ($13) with mushrooms (additional $6); the omelette was tasty but very small and came without bread. I thought it was incredibly overpriced. Especially charging $6 for a couple of mushrooms seems very odd to me. The menu is quite boring. I chose the restaurant because on their website it had interesting things such as a duck confit salad but it appeared that the website was not up to date and the menu had changed weeks ago. Despite the great atmosphere I would not recommend this place to others.
The place was empty besides one other table even though the only reservation I could make was 5:30pm or 8pm. I chose 8pm, and shouldn't have even sat down. The food wasn't very good, my pork belly was kind of mushy, and my Mom's leg of lamb looked and tasted more like a tough loin.
I'm pretty sure the cocktail I had wasn't correct, but I didn't say anything because I never had it before, but later on after thinking about it I came to the conclusion that it didn't taste like the ingredients stated on the menu. When we were finished our dinners the cook proceed to empty the ice machine and it was annoyingly loud, not very respectful. Won't be going back.
We did not have any expectations whatsoever going to the Blackbird, so we were pleasantly surprised by the food, service and overall atmosphere. Our waitress was very nice and prompt with our orders. Although new, she was very helpful and, when she could not answer our questions about some wine pairing she went to ask the chef directly. The four of us shared the ploughman's platter, which was more than generous for a starter, including half a dozen fresh and tasty oysters and three types of cured meats and cheeses. I had the lingcod, which was good, but apparently not as tasty as my husband's sablefish with pork belly. He is still raving about it. The chocolate gateau was also yummy.
My boyfriend and i went to the Blackbird for the England Italy game on june 14 2014. The atmosphere, sound quality and TV's were amazing, we reserved a table for 3pm (kick-off) without specifying that we were coming for the game and they put us at a table right at the front, next to the bar next to the TV. We felt like VIP's! The service was prompt and the food came within 20 minutes dispite it being packed to overflowing!
Food selection was ok, quality of the food was fantastic.
They also put on a mini competition to win a shirt and some goodies - great atmospjere overall. Will definately be coming back.
We booked a table for 630p. Only 6-7 other tables. The bar upstairs was quite rowdy. Our waitress was definitely very attentive. We had oysters, foie gras for appy and i got the duck breast. Food was good but not spectacular. For the price I was paying, I expected more food. Cocktail list was fab. I had the Wimbledon and Dunsmuir G&T. Both very good and worth the price tag. Next time I'll be checking out the bar that was built in the style of The Shining. Food I'll get somewhere else
The food was mediocre and service was slow. I had the chicken and brie sandwich and had I not ordered a salad the whole meal and plate would have been white in colour. We ordered tea at the end of our meal but was told they didn't have any black tea as it "wasn't in rotation". Then when we selected green tea she told us to steep it for a couple of minutes - it was so bitter we had to return it. As a server, they should be aware of what/how to serve the items. We ordered two desserts, one which fell apart in the kitchen and they still brough it to our table - they did bring another one after but even then the presentation was uninspiring. The only upside to the meal was the lemon tart - that was very good.
The food was very good and the menu is extensive. The waitress was very helpful and went out of her way to make suggestions and answer questions. Our table was a little tight; felt we could have been put at a table for four even though there were only two of us as we were a little too close to the next table (and the restaurant wasn't full at all). This likely is more of a "happening" place for the after work crowd and the drink menu reflects the fact that this is indeed what they want. I would love to come and hear some music here after work and get a different experience. In short - good food, good service and the feel of a Pub - which really is what a Public House is! I will go back for an after work visit.
Horrible service, I made a reservation and we got seated upstairs in the bar. When you take reservations you should ask where we prefer to sit. Our table was in the back corner and was so dark we could see each other or read the menu. When we asked about the light the server offered no help. We had to use our phone as flashlights to see each other. When we went to order the waitress the bar was out of half the cocktail menu and it was only 9:00pm. My husband ordered a drink and was told they were also out if that and then we saw it being served at the bar about an hour later. Very disappointed in the service and will definitely not return or recommend it to anyone.
