This restaurant is one of the best in Chicago. The $25 Prix Fixe lunch might be the best value in the entire city. The food is fantastic, presentation excellent and the staff is amazing.

From the moment we arrived there was one screw-up after another. The food was ok but for the price I expected much more innovation and creativity. You can get this quality at many Chicago restaurants and pay a lot less. The service was spotty including the server poring a bottle of wine that should have been decanted due to a lot of sediment. When this was pointed out nothing was done to correct the problem!!

We went for my birthday. From start to finish the food and service were amazing. The wine selection was extensive. We had 3 bottles of wine! The warm shrimp salad and the endive salad appetizers were inventive and flavorful. Our main courses were the skate wing, sturgeon, duck, and wagu beef. The plating was purposeful and the flavor profiles spot on. The pineapple upside down cake was so delicious! They presented me with a dessert of a chocolate covered ice cream with a cookie base. We all had a taste. Service was impeccable. Peter, our waiter was knowledgeable and attentive. Would definitely go back. It’s pricey but worth it.

Fabulous prix fixe lunch. The warm shrimp salad was outstanding. And so was the passion fruit dessert!

This was our first time dining at Blackbird on a Sunday night, and what a difference that made in the noise level. Perhaps because of the day of the week, or this time of year which is slow everywhere in Chicago, the restaurant was not full and the noise level allowed for conversation. We had great service, a lovely meal, and a very enjoyable evening.

The ambiance in the restaurant at 9pm on a Saturday was certainly lively and fun. It definitely had the vibe of being an interesting and unique place to dine. However, the food and service was not what I expected for the restaurant's reputation. We had a fairly full meal and the only things that were close to worth it was the (1) Apple Picking cocktail; (2) Kennifick glass of Cab; (3) eggplant appetizer and (4) the bread. When the bread and wine is the best part of a 250.00 meal for two--something has gone wrong.

First, the hostess was very rude and actually failed to tell Opentable that we made the reservation. The tap water was undrinkable which is strange because Chicago tap water is usually pretty good. We waited ~twenty minutes from the time we sat down before we saw our server. I had the Apple Picking cocktail which was very tasty . They were out of the waygu beef which was an appetizer we were excited about.

The lobster appetizer consisted of chewy lobster that must have been frozen and it was caked with a heavy cream sauce and served poorly cooked noodles. We also had the eggplant appetizer which I have to say was remarkable tasting with a huge range of flavors and textures but was by far the best thing we had. Entries were the quail and the sturgeon. Sturgeon was well cooked and had a nice taste but consisted of two tiny pieces of fish and--not kidding--like four mussels with three pieces of gnocchi. The quail was overly rich. The ingredients (pate, quail, bbq) certainly lend themselves to rich taste and I obviously knew I would be eating a heavy meal but the result was really disappointing. The bbq sauce could have been store brought--it was very sweet and lacked a developed flavor profile. Because we were so disappointed in the meal, we didn't try desert. Although the complimentary desert bites they brought at the head were good so maybe we would have better luck with the sweets.

In short, really disappointed in the performance.

We have had tasting menus in all the 5 star restaurants in Chicago and around the world. This was one of the best we have ever had at about half the price of other spots. Every bite was exquisite and the wine pairing worked very well. The great service rounded out this a wonderful New Years Day treat. It is wonderful to have a chef who delivers on flavor rather than a mad scientist or an architect.

We enjoyed New Years Eve with another couple. We were surprised to be able to get a reservation at Blackbird when we booked the second week of November. When we did, we looked no further. Our experience was excellent. The food was great. We ordered off the menu rather than price fixe. Though Blackbird was full, with tables turning we were never pushed. We exited from our 730 reservation at about 1030. We appreciated, and commented to each other, that we could engage in conversation comfortably and hear each other speak. This is often not the case at other restaurants.

It was truly superb. I admire a restaurant that delivers the same level of quality, service, and fresh foods over a span of time. Twenty years! Truly a beautiful experience, thank you. I've always loved Avec and several of the other sister restaurants in the One Off Hospitality group and Blackbird really takes the cake. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience from beginning to end. I love when the waiters and waitresses actually give you space and time between courses to enjoy the experience and conversation versus trying to push you out for the next table. Nothing was rushed for us on NYE and I thank everyone for their efforts. But given the pressure of NYE, nothing could have been better. Thank you!

***Also, excellent wine selection.

Service was excellent. Based on the seating layout the restaurant is a little noisier than average but it doesn’t detract from the experience. The sturgeon was fantastic as was the endive salad. Wine pairings were spot on. Would love to come back and try the tasting menu.

We went there for lunch. The price for lunch is affordable considering this is a Michelin one star restaurant. The endive salad had good presentation and it tastes good too. celeriac velouté was good too. Duck confit, hanger steak were okay. The seafood stew was very plain to me. In all, not very impressive. Not sure if I will go back.

Blackbird deserves its Michelin. The service was wonderful and each of us had a different appetizer and entree. The atmosphere is lively but not too loud. The scallops were my favorite. Perfectly prepared and beautifly plated.

Maybe I had built it up in my mind, but were so excited to try Blackbird. We started with the scallop and endive salad. Both were very good. Also the two cocktails we ordered were on point. Service was very good. It is close quarters in there, which isn’t unusual, but couple next to us were arguing and were emitting a palpable tension. Entrees arrived; skate wing and beef tenderloin. The skate wing was way too salty, something you don’t expect at a place with This type of pedigree. We had the three cheese board, which was fine. All in all we had a great night out, but the price tag left me a little underwhelmed with the product.

We tried the tasting menu, which I think was a mistake at Blackbird. Several of the courses were excellent, the skate wing was delicious, the venison chop was decent, and a few others were good but apparently not memorable. Several of the courses were blah and additionally heavy enough to leave a bad coating in your mouth and ruin the overall experience. Overall it wasn't well thought out, the courses weren't ordered well, and too many included heavy cream or mystery gelatinous ingredients.

If I were to go back again I would steer clear of the tasting menu and order a starter and a main and go elsewhere for desert.

Disappointed by what we thought of as one of Chicago’s best. My sturgeon arrived cold at the table, so much so that the little orange dabs of sauce had more or less crusted. The flavors were outstanding but hot food should be served hot. I started with the classic endive salad. It was fine but so often imitated that it had lost its specialness. Our server was polite but somewhat disengaged, as if we had somehow displeased her. My wife described her food as “Eh.” Sunday, so perhaps an off night but we’ll think twice before returning.
