Critically acclaimed Blackbird is home base for Executive Chef Paul Kahan, winner of the James Beard Award for Outstanding Chef in 2013 and Best Chef of the Midwest in 2004. Chef de Cuisine Ryan Pfeiffer joined Kahan in the kitchen in 2015, and together they craft elegant and imaginative Midwestern cuisine, showcasing farm-fresh ingredients to create a menu both classic and utterly approachable. Managing Partner and Owner Donnie Madia and Architect Thomas Schlesser crafted a unique and timeless atmosphere in 1997, earning the James Beard Award for Best Restaurant Design and Best Restaurant Design Graphics in 2002.

The Blackbird is truly an exceptional restaurant. This place is fancy, but not stuffy; so we never felt out of place by not wearing our Sunday's best but it's clear your someplace very nice. It's true what they say, "you get what you pay for", and paying top dollar for top notch service and food is money well spent.

Visited july 20th. The food was great but the service could be improved. Did the tasting and felt it was hard to hear the server explaining the dishes being served. I had repeat everything to my girlfriend. The biggest disappointment was the lack of attention to detail. When i made the reservation i stated it was my girlfriends birthday. Twice mentioned. And towards the end of dinner, 4 people around us where greeted with a happy birthday and a small treat with candle. When you spend $500 for a special birthday dinner the least you could do is care to be as detailed as possible. Didn't mind spending money on a food experience with someone i care about. But when i have to leave a place like this feeling guilty wondering if she was upset or not bothered me. Customer service and the attention to detail should have been the easiest part of the experience.

Disappointed with this Blackbird visit. We waited over 35 minutes for our reservation while tables sat open. The restaurant brought us a glass of champagne, but still it was a long wait. While my order of tried & true endive salad and lamb was good, my guest’s order of octopus and sturgeon left them unimpressed. Worth a visit if you’ve never been, but don’t be pressed for time and order specific long-time menu items.

The restaurant was recommended in our tourist guide and in Time Out, and for our last dinner in Chicago, we wanted a special treat... and were really delighted with our time at Blackbird. On average Americans dine early, so arriving at 8.30 pm was a great plus since the noise level went down after 9.00 pm to a very nice moderate level. Temperature was perfect, service swift and pro, and the food was perfect. A special note for the bread, because as French people this was the only great one we tasted while in Chicago. We would definitely come back!

We went for the fix prix lunch. Great value for money! The food took a bit of time but the restaurant was full so this is understandable. The only thing I would have liked was to have a little bit more filling main course. But all in all it was a good balance of flavours, esthetically pleasing plates. If you have time to stop by for lunch it is definitely worth swinging by.

I don’t even know where to start! From the gin fizz to the dessert, everything was amazing! The drink was made with care so it took some time, but appreciated that. It was worth the wait and the price ($22) the cheese plate was amazing and so was my main course, the sturgeon. My husband had the beef and it literally melted in your mouth. We had a great bottle of wine and beignets for dessert. The service was great and the people we sat next to were great. We had conversation with people to our left and right! Overall an amazing experience. Will certainly go back.

My husband and I had a lovely early dinner at Blackbird before seeing a show. The service was excellent: prompt, pleasant, and knowledgeable. Our dinner was very good--I especially loved the tempura asparagus, and we both had very good dinners. I had the Amish chicken, and my husband had the halibut. Beautifully done, with excellent sauces. Highly recommended! It was a bit noisy and as the dinner progressed, it got noisier as more people arrived; however, this didn't distract too much from our experience.

The food is good, not great. The ambiance is okay. I would advise against the tasting menu personally, as not every item stood out - most did however. It’s overall a good experience for a special occasion.

Three colleagues were in town for a week-long business trip. We deduced to treat ourselves to a special dinner. And Wow! We were not disappointed. Blackbird truly is a treat. Every detail is attended to - including purse hooks. The service was exceptional -attentive and informed not invasive. And the food ... oh the food ... beautiful and delicious. It was a true dining experience.

All food was under seasoned. Ordered the octopus, and it really didn’t taste like octopus at all. The sturgeon was pretty good. Had the chitarra for $36 and it was like 4oz of pasta and some tomatoes. Pasta was undercooked. I’ve heard a lot at good things about this place, but I’m not going back. There are many other restaurants in the city that offer better food than what I ate

After a first few years of success, restaurants, like any venture, can get tired. They can rest on their laurels and success, decaying away the greatness that once existed. Truthfully, my expectations were muted, but I was pleasantly surprised with amazing food and solid service. I would say it offers terrific value as well. Thanks for a great meal.

The food was extremely impressive! We wish we had enough time to do the 10 course dinner in Chicago! We had the prefix dinner and it was a great sneak peek to the chefs' talent! Unbelievable place! The only complain was that our server seemed extremely tired, didn't have much energy to make introduce the menu, smile, or go above and beyond.
