What a cool place - great vibe, nice set up and very professional and friendly staff. The food was delicious- my steak was cooked perfectly! It was a great place to go for thanksgiving. The Brussel sprouts were not the best I’ve had but everything else was very good, especially the sweet potatoes! The butterscotch bread pudding was delicious! The only thing that was not perfect was the price - quite high but I suppose that is “typical” for the city?
Lovely. Food and service disappointed there was no music
I booked brunch here for a special occasion - two birthdays in our party of five because I had been here for brunch pre-Covid and loved the beautiful rustic dining room, food and ambiance. We planned to have brunch at 2pm on Sunday. When we arrived we found out that beautiful main dining room was closed because of a private party later that evening. We were seated instead in the bar area where there was live music - the music was nice except that I was with my mother who cannot hear well in a noisy room so it was difficult for her to hear conversation with the music. They moved us to a table in the back of the bar but seated us on little foot stools rather than chairs. As soon as we sat down the manager came over to tell us we had to order immediately because the kitchen was closing. She was very nasty. I didn’t even have time to look at the menu. I felt so pressured I just ordered the first thing I saw that looked good. They brought the food out almost immediately. I had a kale salad which was ok (nothing great) My mother had the pancakes which were generously sized and she enjoyed it and someone in our group had the frittata which was small but good. We felt so rushed during the meal that we didn’t even have time to get dessert (which I had planned to do with a candle and birthday song for our two birthday girls) I had even mentioned the birthdays when I booked the reservation online but clearly no one paid it any attention. We were in and out in under an hour. The waiter was nice but clearly he was being pressured by the manager and kitchen to get us out of there. We drove all the way into the city from the suburbs for what was supposed to be a special occasion and it was a huge disappointment. If the main dining room was closed and the kitchen was closing at 2:30 they should have notified me when I made the reservation online. I had raved about this place since my last visit but now I will not be going back.
The food is great and the people are so nice.
Excellent food. Very helpful staff. Frenetic entry into bar but not a long wait for a table, with reservation.
My favorite place. Service and flavor for days!!
I was surprised to find that none of the staff were wearing masks and that they packed people/tables in as close as they did. There were several parties going on in the bar area and the restaurant was packed. Service was slow but our server was top notch. I got the ribs and I kind of regretted it as it was a huge plate of bone in ribs and the shoestring fries were hard to eat with a fork. The rest of the food (and the wine) was very good.
The food is excellent!!
We were terribly disappointed with our Blackbarn dining experience. My very good friend (who happens to be the head concierge at a luxury nyc hotel) gave me the Blackbarn recommendation. We were so excited to try it. This was a special reunion weekend with out of town friends. We arrived in time for our reservation and we were seated at a tiny, short table. We asked the host to move us, and we switched to a high top. Strangely, that table was worse. It was beside a drafty window and it was uncomfortably high. We ultimately moved back to the low table.
Our waiter was completely unknowledgeable about the menu, but was more than happy to upsell the drinks.
We waited over 35 minutes with no service. No bread basket. No appetizers. We flagged down another server and finally our waiter noted that we didn’t have our food. When the dishes did appear they were cold.
It wasn’t until we went to the restrooms that we noticed the issue.
We had been seated in the bar lounge and not the warm and inviting barn-like restaurant. We laughed because everyone had a delicious looking bread basket.
When we complained to Noah, the manager, he apologized profusely. He had no idea why we were seated where we were.
He offered us a glass of dessert wine.
We declined. We were completely disappointed all around and frustrated that we paid the check at all.
Very lovely experience. Cocktails were amazing. Bar tenders were attentive and knowledgeable.
Waiter was very friendly and accommodating. The steak and pork shank were both delicious and our waiter helped us pair w a nice Malbec. My partner wasn’t quite taken with the broccoli rabe that came w the pork shank (which was delicious!) and he was so courteous & replaced with a delicious side salad.
Beautiful time spent at BlackBarn!
Perfect — great service!
Terrible waiter...bad food..warm coffee. Very subpar experience for a pricey place.
While the food is great, the service in recent trips has begun to slip. We often did not see our server and had to ask other servers for items such as bread, silverware, and water. The restaurant was not packed so we were confused at the lack of attentiveness
Decor outweighs the food 1000 to 1
I would like to compliment our waitress. She was very professional and attentive.
The restaurant acoustics are awful. It is not the place you want to go if you actually want to talk to the person you are having dinner with and hear them. I think that they must be seriously understaffed because we were constantly sending someone to look for our waiter.
The food took forever to arrive as well.
We were extremely rushed by the wait staff, who kept trying to take away our food as we were eating, and kept checking every 10-15 min to see if they could take away our plates. What gives? We weren’t even there that long — they kept trying to give us the check starting about 45 after our reservation time. At one point, they tried to take away a half-full glass of wine we had just received a few minutes prior!
No heaters in their outdoor dining set-up, which is on the sidewalk.
This was extremely disappointing. I’ve never encountered this at Blackbarn before — prior experiences were all wonderful.
Table broke in the middle of dinner. No fix provided .
Service was ok but a lot of confusion on the servers part as to what dish was what . Parading dishes that were not available to the day to day guests and only to special parties did not make us feel as important as others.- walk it without showing it to the entire dining room if we can’t have it .
We sat outside, which was lovely, and our server was also lovely. But there were apparently multiple events and large parties going on at the same time, which created a huge backup in the kitchen. I didn't time it, but we waited an inordinate amount of time even for our drinks, and then for each course. And then we spent dessert trying to ignore and avoid the small mouse running around our feet (which, yes, is a risk in outdoor dining in NYC, but when we pointed it out to our server, he made no effort to shoo it away).
The food is delicious!! All 5 of us loved our dishes. Great service and ambiance too! I am glad they are back after the pandemic. Will be back soon.
The food was incredible. HIGHLY recommend the pork shank, the ribeye and the GNOCCHI OMG
The appetizer’s were fantastic. It was the main that put it over the top to get the five star rating. Well worth it.
We reserved through Open Table but in no way was it clear that the tavern menu wasn’t going to be available depending on where we sat. We actually had to ask to move tables to be able to order off both menus. This is just silly! Fully combine the two menus and let people order whatever they want, no matter where the sit. The restaurant is gorgeous, the food and service were both outstanding. The staff was great about moving us but they shouldn’t have to be put in this position! Correct this one little flaw and take this place from good to great!
Excellent food in an upscale but approachable atmosphere.
Our serve was truly so accommodating and gave the best recommendations!
Always welcoming and reliable. Try the weekend brunch. The staff is perfect - attentive but not rushing. A local favorite.
Staff was very friendly. The setting was quite nice with neat chairs and fixtures. Eggs benedict was excellent. Burrata and tomato salad lacked flavor and polenta crouton was soggy and oily. Johnny cakes had slightly burned taste (delicious ricotta wit it). Meal was slow even though restaurant was mostly empty.
We had dinner here before a show at MSG and everything was great - food, service, atmosphere, all of it! The menu was a lot of fun because they offer both sharables and entrées. My son had the slow roasted pork shoulder and it was the winner that night. I had the pasta special, also very good and my wife and daughter shared a few small plates. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive, we enjoyed chatting with him throughout dinner.
I along with a small group of friends greatly enjoyed our experience at Blackbarn as we ate outside on a lovely Saturday. Highly recommend the chillaguiles or one of the specialty cocktails they offer. 8.5/10 👍
It was great to be back to an old favorite restaurant! Great service, food and atmosphere. Perfect for a business lunch.
Always a wonderful time at BB restaurant! The food is delicious and the service is excellent. Love the open kitchen! I hope to have a private party there in the near future.
Tasty place with good ambiance. Friendly staff and great food presentation.
The service was very attentive, my choice of entrée of the butternut squash ravioli was absolutely delicious, Wine list was wonderful, the ambience in the restaurant was fun, energetic, and spacious. As an older diner, I could take the music down one decibel.😊
Horrible experience. The staff was rude to us and wouldn't seat us despite having a reservation.
Service was slow. Would order a drink and came out 20 min later. Restaurant was not that crowded. Sat indoors.
Service and decor were very nice. The host accommodated us early for our reservation. The menu looked enticing but the food was mediocre and somewhat bland. Bloody Mary had a harsh flavor that was not enjoyable. Would not go back.
Food took forever
Went at noon for a Saturday brunch. Food was good, but I expected more. The portion sizes were obscenely huge, especially the pancakes. Hard to get a refill for coffee. Live music was nice.
Great place, great food and great service. A little too noisy for a conversation, though.
