El Black Trumpet es un bistro y bar de vinos de 2 pisos ubicado en el corazón del histórico puerto antiguo de Portsmouth. Ambos pisos ofrecen vistas al río Piscataqua y a los remolcadores tantas veces fotografiados que aún escoltan enormes barcos petroleros hasta el puerto. Friendly, cozy, and relaxed atmosphere from the second we walked in where the hostess greeted us. We decided to eat at the upstairs bar instead of in the downstairs dining room. The evening just got progressively better. Terrific bartender...he was quite busy, but still made us feel like we were his only guests. Very helpful with suggestions, informative and a pleasure to talk to. Food and wine were outstanding, and we noticed great teamwork among the staff. We were very fortunate to meet the owner/chef, Evan Mallett; this was an added bonus as our trip to Portsmouth was based on our dinner reservation at Black Trumpet. Can't wait to go back!

This is by far the premier place to eat in Portsmouth and surrounding area. Chef Mallett is a regular on the "best chefs in the region"...and again a James Beard finalist for the third or fourth time(?). We love dining upstairs where you can fully enjoy a view of one of N.E.'s most beautiful bodies of water. Amazing food...great water views....lovely old building. What else would you want in a dining experience?!!

Our waitperson Caroline deserves kudos for her friendly service. She was fantastic. The food was wonderful as usual. Were there for Restaurant Week. Had the Coq Au Vin which was superb. Wonderful, relaxing and cozy. Great A++++

The dinner was fabulous overall. However, the hostess was not very friendly. We were also disappointed with our waitress, who just managed to walk by our table and slide the bill on it without a word. There was no option for tea, coffee or perhaps another cocktail with our dessert either since we were never asked. It was during Restaurant Week, but if you choose to Participate in this event then the staff attitudes need to change. We were out of the restaurant in 1 hour for appetizer, entree and dessert. The food will have us return, but proper staff etiquette and a smile would make the evening more enjoyable.

I love the cozy atmosphere at Black Trumpet, and they are amazing at accommodating special requests. I wrote in my OpenTable reservation that I was vegan, and the chef had already prepared an alternative main dish for me that the server told me about without me even having to ask. Last time I was there, they even made a special vegan dessert for me on the spot.

We were really excited to dine at Black Trumpet, having heard great reviews. Although the service was outstanding, the food was okay, main meal was a bit disappointing (I had the Arctic Char, my husband the beef) and the desserts were awful. The chocolate tart was cakey and neither fudgey nor sweet, it stuck in the throat, while the carrot cake had way too much cinnamon. Given the cost of the meal $140 without the tip, I had two glasses of wine and my husband just drank water), the value just isn't there and we won't go back.
