Black Sheep Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Was in Jax for a meeting, and the place we wanted to go had no seating. Took a chance on Black Sheep — it had been mentioned in Florida Trend, and all 5 of us were impressed. The food was interesting, creative and, even better, delicious. Nice beer and wine menu too. I’ll go back and have already recommended it to others.
We were seated quickly at 6:30 - to be expected as we were early diners. My wife’s cauliflower soup appetizer was excellent. My smoked salmon appetizer was highly recommended and described elaborately on the menu but turned out to be three small squares of ordinary grocery store grade smoked salmon on stale wheat bread spread with cream cheese. We then proceeded to wait for an hour for our main courses. At about 20 minutes into the wait our server (who was very nice) came to apologize for the wait, and then disappeared for the next 40 minutes. I suggested to my wife that we pay our bill for everything up to this point and leave. I got up and was about to speak to the receptionist when our waitress passed the reception desk with two plates. I inquired if these were our dinners and was told yes. I followed the server back to the table. She again apologized, saying that the upstairs roof dining area was completely swamped, causing the delay. My wife and I had checked out the roof when we first arrived but decided that we might be cold, and a breeze was coming up - the point being that although there were people at the roof bar, only a few roof tables were occupied. In addition, The main dining room where we sat, was at best no more than half occupied during our dinner. But back to the food. My wife ordered salmon, which was attractively plated and my wife was pleased. I had ordered Steak Diane. Big mistake. Not sure what cut of meat was used, however it was decent quality except for a broad swath of fat running across the steak. The result was that the meat on one side of the fat was a perfect medium, while the other side was very rare. The meat was covered with Diane sauce which was long on the Dijon mustard but short on cognac. The meat had not been flattened and trimmed of fat as in a proper Steak Diane preparation, (usually presented and cooked at tableside) but the worst offense was that the meat had been cooked separately from the sauce.
Rooftop bar/restaurant at sunset was awesome. As a nonsmoker had issue with a group of heavy smokers up wind of me. Restaurant staff wasn't able to move us for anywhere could have smoke I was reminded it was an open air and they can't do anything. Gratefully the smokers left and the rest of the evening enjoyed the great food and views.
We had great food here. The menu is a little different than online. We had grits which I normally hate but these were super tasty. I haven't tried or tasted any since that have been sooo good. You know the food is good when foods you hate everywhere else makes you a fan. This is a must try.
My husband and I enjoyed an early dinner and Happy Hour at Black Sheep. Because the weather was outstanding, we chose to sit on the upstairs deck. Zach provided excellent service and we were pleased with everything we ordered - local craft beer, wine, trout spread, pork sandwich, and eggplant entree.
Very much enjoyed our meal and atmosphere but did not enjoy the cocktails. Cosmopolitan was warm and did not enjoy the flavor. Vodka and water tasted like mostly water and the our guest ordered a Manhattan which he did not enjoy. Would have ordered a second round of we had enjoyed our first round.
We enjoyed our dinner on the rooftop which was unfortunately interrupted by a storm, however, the staff was exceptionally helpful and accommodating. We were seated downstairs to complete our evening. It was a great experience and we plan to return soon to taste more of their delicious food and beverage options.
Two of our party of four had the Eggs Benedict and they said they were terrible, the worst they had ever had anywhere. Cheese Whiz like sauce on top and dried out muffins on the bottom. The vegetable hash was ok until trying to eat the beets and carrots which were way undercooked. The starter of ham, sausage, and bacon was good, and enjoyed by all. The coffee was ok. The gelato with cake and blueberry dessert was met with mixed reviews. The cake was very dry, but the gelato and berries were yummy.
We would not recommend brunch at Black Sheep to anyone!
We came in for the Sunday night fried chicken and to quote my husband... "it was the best friend chicken " he ever had! Our served Blaise was awesome! We are coming back - next time, without the kids - so we can enjoy a nice cocktail on the deck! What a great place with great service and food that was amazing!
We were dining with friends before heading to a concert at Daily's Downtown. We shared a bottle of house red, a fine everyday wine. We all had a salad to start and we always say BLK SHP has the best Caesar in JAX. Hubby had the vegan Eggplant entree and was quite pleased. I had the Fresh catch and it was perfect. Our friends had the Salmon, and the Salmon Tartare + shoestring fries. We ate everything! So tasty and the service is top notch as always. Love this place.
