The Black Pearl
From the warm ambience and classic cuisine of our Commodore's Room and Tavern to the al-fresco charm of our Waterside Patio and raw bar, the Black Pearl has something to offer everyone. We only take reservations in our Commodore's room - please note there is a business casual dress code - no jeans, sneakers or shorts. Men are required to wear a collared shirt.
The Black Pearl, on Bannister's Wharf, is open seven days a week.
Word of advice - do not use open table to make reservations at this restaurant- they do not accept them. The staff was accommodating to us and we were able to sit and have a fantastic meal. But word to the wise - call the restaurant directly for reservations.
It was not open even after I got confirmation from Open Table. I called the Black Pearl after I found it was not open. The phone operator was just arrogant. She didn't apologize at all and suddenly hung up the call. I tried to verify her name but she just answer she was operator no.7 so that she could avoid her responsibility for her rudeness to the person who made a phone call. I assume she reflected the restaurant's arrogant attitude to guests. This restaurant is the restaurant that you should avoid to go by any means.
I made a reservation thru Open Table for Dinner for 4 for 2/1. The Open Table confirmed my reservation. And...the restaurant was closed!! Apparently they close in early Feb for remodeling and didn't bother to let Open Table know this information (and therefore, we were not informed).
When you have a party of 4 standing outside of a closed restaurant during a night of the Polar Vortex, it is uncomfortable and irritating.
I am not certain whether the Black Pearl or Open Table should get a bad Yelp review for this! or both.
They were closed...me and my wife were very disappointed...they should not take reservations if they are closed for renovations
They are a great restaurant but they are not open!! Delete them
I dined in The Commodore Room and everything was more than I expected. The best dinner during my stay in Newport. Service, ambience, food selection and quality were outstanding.
I was told when I got to the restaurant that they don’t honor reservations from Open Table! But she did us this one time favor but wouldn’t except it from me again through open table. If they don’t honor from Open Table how did she get my reservation?? We probably got the worst table in the place, people standing right on top of us waiting for their table, not the best ambience with someone’s tush in your face.
The clam chowder, ceviche and lobster tails were wonderful!
Our waitress was also very nice
My negative review concerns reservation procedure and is for both Black Pearl and Open Table. Do Not Use Open Table to make a reservation at the Black Pearl. I had made a reservation for the rear dining room for a special occasion through Open Table. I confirmed this reservation on line twice. Unfortunately I did not call the restaurant directly. When we arrived, the hostess informed us that they (Black Pearl) have been trying to remove themselves from Open Table “for months” and are ignored. She said one evening she had 12 parties who “had made the same mistake” they were unable to seat. Once again, The Black Pearl does not take reservations for the more formal dining room through Open Table. Unclear about the outdoor seating option. We were eventually seated outside which is very casual dining, and had a nice dinner but it was Not what we had planned.
Don’t book through opentable. They do not honor reservations made through this site. They did manage to find us a table in the informal room. The computer had an issue and it took nearly an hour to get our food. Our server was very nice and gave us a discount for the inconvenience. They also do not have a kids menu. But the main takeaway is don’t book from opentable. Somehow the site is not corrected that they do not accept reservations from them and unless you luck out with a very slow night in the formal dining room you won’t get in there. Call directly
Servers was terrific, he got all details correct and he was smiling and knowledgeable.
All cocktails were perfect, our appetizers and entree, too. Scallops, softball crabs , steaks, YUM!
While the New England clam chowder is a standout, the rest of the menu is overpriced and not memorable.
Great service! Very welcoming. The restaurant is a Newport classic. Food prices are reasonable, and the menu provides a wide range from burgers to higher end steak and fish dishes.
Took a date that had never eaten at the BP
SHE LOVED IT
It was every bit as good as it was in the 1980s and 1990s so my hat is off
I haven't had their clam chowder in 40 years and it was still the best!
Black Pearl was recommended by a friend. We had reservations in main Dining Room but were seated in Tavern. Food was average...in fact, the duck was so salty I could not finish it. Pretty disappointing.
We’ve dined here before. Made a reservation for dinner in the off season, got to the restaurant and were told the commodore’s room hasn’t been open for months and won’t be open until May. So we ate in the tavern which was fine, but was not the commodore’s room. We were dressed as required and everyone else was in jeans. The food was good, but not exceptional and not what we had planned. Don’t make a reservation here until probably May, because the upscale dining area isn’t open. If you’re ok with their tavern area, they don’t take reservations.
back room were we reserved was not open. we were advised when we arrived. we would have change rest. if we had know. will not go back. m macqueen
The atmosphere, food and service were exceptional. We went because our son had accepted student day at Johnson & Wales. So we will be back.
Another great meal at The Pearl! Reliably solid food and service in a lovely room.
On occasion we meet our friends at the Commodore Room for an outstanding meal with welcoming ambiance.
Excellent meal waiter was very attentive quiet romantic peaceful Awesome view
Wonderful ambiance and excellent food! Great service! Highly recommend!
This was our fourth time at The Black Pearl. This time with the entire family for a pre-Thanksgiving dinner. It was a unique and wonderful experience. We dined in the Commadore's Room. It is an authentic and elegant setting, but not stuffy. Not unlike a meal at home but where everyone else does the work! We had the salmon and lobster ravioli from the menu. And a few of the special halibut plates. All was well-prepared and appropriately seasoned. The service was outstanding and perfectly timed. All in all a fantastic evening.
We could not have asked for more exceptional service. Most accommodating in every way. Timely as well. Both of us had seafood that was delicious. Dessert shared and spectacular. A wonderful well known place to not miss when in Newport!
Too expensive for the value...Too expensive for the value...Too expensive for the value...vvToo expensive for the value...Too expensive for the value...Too expensive for the value...
Richard was awesome Again! He makes all the difference. Food was stellar as usual. Thank you
Expensive but good. Excellent old fashioned service
Always wanted to try the Commodore’s Dining Room and it was fantastic. The best lobster bisque I’ve ever had.
The Black Pearl never disappoints. I have been visiting Newport for over 30 years and never miss at least 1 meal at the Black Pearl. Originally I came for the Clam Chowder but their phenomenal Commodore Room menu is a draw as well. So many wonderful options.
Service is great as well.
Best clam chowder, sole was delicious, perfect sized portions, excellent cocktails.
We had the bay scallops. They were delicious. Our waiter was very helpful in helping decide what to order. His suggestions were very good.
Delicious food & wonderful staff. My hubby had a haddock & I had scallops. Also the lobster ravioli starter was excellent. Didn't have a sweet wine like white zinf or Riesling so a cocktail was the next best thing.
Always a classic phenomenal Newport meal and part of the city ambiance.
We were seated on time, not rushed through any course & our waiter was attentive and friendly.
We enjoyed a superb meal in the dining room reservation section where it was quaint, quiet and away from the hustle and bustle of surrounding area. Service was excellent and the door was outstanding!!
The food was excellent. I had a filet mignon with béarnaise sauce that melted in your mouth. For an appetizer I had a shrimp, crab and lobster cocktail that was delicious. My husband had one of the specials for an appetizer- lobster ravioli which he said was delicious and his entrée of almond crusted salmon was great. Service was outstanding! I thought that a glass of wine for $12.50 was a bit expensive. I will go back there the next time we come to Newport.
Great food and atmosphere. My parents raved about it. Best seafood I've had in awhile.
Five friends ate here for dinner. The waitress was nice and attentive, however she encouraged us to get the halibut special when we asked about her favorite meal. Said it was " to die for." It was not. It tasted bland and overlooked. We were all soooo disappointed. If the clam chowder and bread were not so good we would have rated this place with two stars.
Advice: don't get the specials. Probably trying to get rid of fish.
We had reservations during our vacation and it was the best meal of our trip. Would definitely revisit The Black Pearl.
The Black Pearl is rated 4.2 stars by 51 OpenTable diners.
Yes, you can generally book this restaurant by choosing the date, time and party size on OpenTable. Due to local restrictions, this restaurant may not be accepting reservations at the moment.
