Black Pearl Ann Arbor

We had a great time. After reading some of the reviews I was not 100% confident when I booked this place for our pre-Valentine day dinner, and this skepticism was still there when we entered and were seated. But from the first contact with the server, we knew it is going to be a good evening. Food was just great. Both appetizer and entree were just delicious. Dessert was a little late and despite our insisting, they had it on house and excluded from final check. We will definitely return to this place.

I really wanted to love black pearl. Sold as an upscale experience with reasonable sized menu and nice location. The food was good, but the appetizers were expensive for what they were (calamari - I think there are a half dozen restaurants in A2 I've eaten at with better/more calamari for a reduced cost). The entree costs were very reasonable and appropriate.

The service though we really not reflective of an upscale experience. The hostess was on her phone when we walked in and was clearly pretty bored. I get it, it was a slow night (Thursday), but still, appearances/ambiance matter. Similarly, our waitress was fine, but as we were leaving I saw she was eating her dinner in the next room, which sort of explained the slow service even though the restaurant was very empty.

I wanted to love the black pearl. I was intrigued by the chef's table and was thinking of pursuing it with some friends. But after the night we had, I'm pretty "meh" on it. The food was good, the prices were mixed, the service was poorish (but not horrible).

Outstanding meal and service

The service and cocktails were good as usual but the food was really disappointing. It was bland. I like going to restaurants with smaller portions and don't mind paying for it but for the prices I expected a higher quality of food.

Food was delicious! We would definitely recommend the clam chowder. The staff was friendly too. We will definitely be back!

Food was really great. The fish tacos were awesome. The only downfall is the drink options. We bother prefer craft beer to craft cocktails but there were only bottled beers, none on tap. Somewhat limited selection. But overall really good experience!

Ambiance and service were good. Foot was very subpar for all 7 of us there.

Food was fantastic. We ate so many appetizers because they were so delicious. Didn’t make it to the entrees. That’s for next time. Cocktails were delicious too. Waiter was very professional. We had a wonderfully relaxed and happy evening with delicious food!

We had a wonderful evening celebrating my son's 21st birthday. Waitress was awesome and attentive for our family, food was beyond delicious, and the drinks wonderfully fresh and unique.

Two words - Fish Tacos! Still, after many holidays in Mexico and on the Caribbean, we have not found any to compare.

Additionally, the place a small but well-thought-out menu filled with tasty plates. One can sit at a table for a more formal meal or at the bar to wade though a number of the appetizers (tapas style) while drinking from the decent wine and cocktail menu.

The place always has a nice vibe, and the only problem might be getting a table on the most busy nights.

I am from out of town and had the task of finding a place for a business dinner with two colleagues and after looking at the menu and looking at some reviews chose the Black Pearl. We each enjoyed the martinis we had prior to dinner. Dinner was delicious! We each had something different and each dish was excellent. Everyone thought it was a great choice.

Cool ambiance. Nice waitstaff. Ann Arbor pricey to be expected- $75 for three bowls of soup, one entree, a beer, a tea, and a side salad with salmon...and delicious lava cake dessert.

The Black Pearl consistently delivers well prepared food in a lovely setting, served by attentive, friendly wait staff. Service always excellent. Fun place to eat in the heart of downtown Ann Arbor. Would like to see the wine list improve.

Great food and awesome service. They were also very accommodating when my map app made me late and then parking took a bit longer, too.

Ate there before seeing a show at the ARK. Perfect location. And the blackened swordfish was amazing.

Tables are too close together for an intimate dinner best kept to a fun night out with friends or casual conversation. The bar is very good as are the servers and manager the food is eclectic and tasty.
