Love this spot. Great vibe and quant. Usually everything is great. We loved the fried chicken, but the short rib was over cooked this one time. It happens. Service and staff are always great.
Our first visit to Black Dog Tavern. Our meal was very good and our server was friendly and attentive (but not too attentive). It was fairly quiet, but then it was mid-week and there are pandemic restrictions. I had the fried chicken, which was tasty, as were the sides (mac and cheese and coleslaw). My wife had the mac and cheese and enjoyed it a lot. Creamy and tasty. The menu had some good options, both for food and alcohol. We'll be back.
This used to be a favorite spot, mostly because of the ambience. It seems to have undergone a personality "vacuuming". All atmosphere is gone. No art on the walls (they used to have glorious 1920s French advertising posters); the music sounded like a Pac-Man game in the next room with overtones of dish-washer; the greeter lacked any kind of warmth or graciousness; the lighting was "hospital cafeteria-esque." The waiter was nice and gave some good info about the wine but the food was underwhelming. Steak/Frites was just that. A big slab of steak (they used to slice it nicely) which was cooked well but a bit tasteless, and a bunch of french fries. Not really frites and not even a single condiment. Had to ask for salt and pepper and aioli for the fries. Aioli was just mayonnaise. Pretty disappointing food but it really was the complete absence of ambience that really turned me off. This was once a place that we would take visitors to Kington for a charming, casually elegant evening. I would never take a guest there now. Not doing that again!
A very nice meal, attentive service, clean, great lighting. We would go back!
Went for my birthday dinner. Food was beyond delicious! Service impeccable! Always enjoy myself when I go!
A very enjoyable experience. Certainly will dine there again
Black Dog has fallen a long way from when they were Chien Noir. Now it's nothing more than a glorified finger food place in a well-restored old building. The food is over-priced and the wine-by-the-glass prices are larcenous. If you want a decent lunch - though pricey - then you'll be happy. If you're going for a nice dinner, you'll be disappointed.
Amazing food and service! We had the steak sandwich and fish and chips - both meals were absolutely delicious. Our server was super easy going, attentive and keen to give her opinion on the menu items. Will definitely be going back.
My new fave! Every single thing we tasted was perfect! Immediately daughter & I have decided to make it a monthly dinner date there. 🤩
1. The food was amazingly great!
korean duck wings- it's very tasty , steak frites-was cooked to perfection
Veggie sandwich-mmm so yummy
And for dessert, we tried creme caramel(this is to die for) and chocolate trifle(this one is just ok)
2. Service is excellent!
3. Ambience- we're fortunate that it wasn't that busy when we came so we did enjoyed our dinner
Overall, we will definitely come back!
Our server was extremely rude and pushy. It was as though we were an inconvenience to them. We decided to leave after our app and go to another restaurant. We had very high hopes as this was our first experience at black dog.
Excellent burger and fantastic service.
I was disappointed to find out that it was no longer a French restaurant. I was looking forward to the onion soup that was recommended to me. I did enjoy the food but when you have your heart set on that fabulous soup nothing can take that craving away.
Always a pleasure to dine here. Great food to delight the palate and beautiful ambiance. One of our go to restaurants in Kingston
Great meal and ambiance. Had steak frites, fried chicken and brussel sprouts appetizer.
All excellent. Lots of choices on menu.
Very good choice of wine and beer.
Will definitely dine there again.
We had a amazing time on Saturday night! Food and service were amazing! Would definitely recommend!! Thank you!
The atmosphere and food were great. Had the Brussel Sprouts as an appetizer. It seems like an odd thing to have as a sharable but they are delicious! If you like brussel sprouts order them.
Food was amazing, still have some Chien Noir favs like duck confit poutine. Staff were attentive and friendly. Part of my party was late to be seated and it was no problem despite covid suggestions. Can’t wait to come back!
Have to be careful at which table they sit you. We were given a table very close to the bar, and when the couple sitting at the bar arrived they were within 1 meter of us. In fact, they had a hard time getting to their chairs, that's how close they were to us. Those seats in the bar should not be there! We asked to move to another table and, although they did move us, it was not without a bit of attitude.
Great food and ambiance. Servers was awesome and very attentive. My favorite restaurant downtown Kingston.
We recently went to Black Dog Tavern for dinner and everything was very good! I would highly recommend the brussel sprout appetizer! So yummy!
Always nice to dine here. Classic gastro pub food, with some modern embellishments, that is prepared very well. I think they could expand the wine list a little though.
Food and drinks were very tasty, and we really enjoyed our visit. The restaurant itself was fairly quiet, presumably because of Covid, and we appreciated that tables were spaced apart and dividers used.
Wonderful as always, so pleased to be back, felt like going home. Best Judith
Wonderful visit for brunch . Eggs Benny could have been hotter when served otherwise this was a five star experience.
Second time visiting from out of town, and the food and service do not disappoint. This is so much than a pub. It’s a gastro pub but really should be a bistro and the name Le Chien Noire is still my preferred name of choice. Everyone is welcome, but the caliber of the chef demands the higher standard in my opinion. Regardless, even during Covid (having recently welcomed diners back), staff was courteous and professional and safe. It felt like the “good old days”. We were 3 women meeting to celebrate a birthday and even though one of the ladies was my 20 year old daughter who goes to school in Kingston, she was treated just as courteously as her slightly older companions 😉 The short ribs were tasty and tender and I didn’t want polenta (sorry chef!) and it was no problem to get my frites. The charcuterie board we shared before hand was yummy too. Lovely glass of Prosecco to start and a tasty bottle of Amarone with our mains made the dinner perfect. We might have had to much fun as we totally forgot to order dessert. Probably just as well, because hello I haven’t been properly out in forever and us lightweights weren’t used to a before dinner drink and wine. Atmosphere is cozy and warm and in the summer they have a gorgeous hidden gem, the patio. Whether dining in or out, there is something for everyone! Thank you again! I’ll be back!
Amazing evening with great food
Love this place. Cozy atmosphere, fantastic service and amazing food. Would 100% recommend!
The grilled veggie sandwich was amazing, and the fries never disappoint. My husbands spare ribs weren’t overly impressive, good but not great.
Our server, Justin, was phenomenal! The foods were excellent and of great portion! The wine selection is not too bad either. Our dining experience was really special.
To give them a break don't know if they were not prepared to reopen. But hearing that they let in the GTA as the bartender explained was disheartening. Food was not near the par of what they were charging.
Way too much money for what you get. $24 for fried chicken in a basket? Popeyes is tastier and a better deal. $12 for a martini? I am aware we are in COVID-19 restrictions but condiments in packets. Tepid hamburgers. We asked for an empty booth and were told we had to reserve one. That wasn’t an option on Open Table. Chien Noir was much better. I hope this is re-opening jitters but we won’t be going back any time soon. There are so many other places at this price point in Kingston.
Even with the hurdles presented by covid, not a pleasant experience. Arrived for our 4pm reservation and told to come back in 5-10 minutes. It was 3:51 on my cellphone. The pub was very cold and others were putting on jackets during their meal. Waitress was initially pushy, then not interested. Food was good.
Had a great time, our server was outstanding, drinks were good, food was great. Definitely will be back. Covid protocols were in place and was never a concern while we were there.
Not Covid Freindly
Over priced for a pub
Amazing place and great service we would highly recommend a visit
Great service. Staff was friendly, attentive and efficient. Good location downtown with sightseeing clise by. Will recommend to friends and will return when I come back in town.
Great food, friendly staff, but low availability of vegan options for a gastropub in 2020
