Tickets to each evening's performance typically range from $15-$45 per person (check calendar for exact pricing) and includes stage view at a VIP table downstairs. We also have bar seating and standing room available nightly at discounted prices, as well as our Lobby Bar (located one floor above the music) with FREE entry!
True to its roots, the space combines grit with glam in the city’s historic arts and entertainment district. The menu features modern American supper club, timeless cocktails, and a grower-producer champagne collection. With the perfect mix of curated music and live entertainment, Black Cat has something for everyone.
The space music and overall ambiance was excellent as always but the service was abysmal. Drinks were consistently delivered late and incorrectly and rather than speak with me or even comp them, the manager sent more alcohol, that I didn’t want or need!
I am a returning customer and almost embarrassed by the unprofessionalism displayed.
Third time I am here. It's consistently a good place for a cocktail, dinner, and listening to good music. Service at the bar upstairs is always bad, but eventually they'll acknowledge and serve you. and then you can look forward to excellent service downstairs when you have your dinner. It's a small place so music is v very loud and you will not be able to have a conversation over dinner when the band is playing..
I was there to see an old friend, Renee Lubin-Holmes, sing. She is spectacular. The venue is very good for small ensemble music. Food and drink are very good, as well, if a touch pricy.
The ambiance was wonderful with great music but the place was almost empty on a Sunday night, and they sat us right at the front which was incredibly loud. The food is just okay. The Brussels sprouts were way over-sauced, and the hamburger was over-cooked. Go for a drink, not for dinner. And just stick to wine, the cocktails are very medium.
Wonderful venue to see live music by talented musicians. Food is quite good as well - salmon was exceptional. We were there on a Saturday night and waited forever for a server. The floor manager finally took our drink order. The waitress never managed to come by our table in advance of any need, but she would drop by just after someone else had already taken care of us (due to our looking around). Maybe they were short-staffed that night? Floor manager was a good sport and worked hard. Waitress was terrible. My only other comment is not the club's fault, but it would be nice if the performers adhered to the same dress code as the patrons. The audience was well dressed for a night out. The performers on 3/1 looked like they had just come in from landscaping their yards. At the risk of sounding like a cranky old woman, it was an incongruous look that was off-putting. A dress shirt would have gone a long way.
We love the Black Cat for date night. It's such a great, intimate place to enjoy live music, and have some food and drinks - all in place small enough that all seats are great seats. Our only trouble with this visit was the service. Friendly, yes - but the dinner order got messed up, and I ended up eating my food alone while my partner's food was being prepared because they served him the wrong entree. The floor manager said his meal would be comp'd but it wasn't... but they did provide him one complimentary cocktail. The other weird thing we noticed was the intent on trying to serve the same dish over and over. So, they originally tried to serve my partner the fish and chips which he didn't order. Then, throughout the course of the evening, the staff tried to serve fish and chips to the table next to us - on three different occasions, over an hour timeframe. Three diff times someone would try to place the fish and chips on their table. They'd explain they didn't order it and it would be taken away. Then, about 15-20 min later it happened again. And then another 20 min later it happened again. The club is small, and we're all in there pretty snug, so these repetitive attempts interrupted our enjoyment of the band because it was happening right in front of us. Overall, had a great time with great music, but we might consider eating elsewhere before we come to Black Cat for drinks and a show.
Music was great, food was good. Service, cost, and customer service about credit card charges were bad. Very expensive, hidden fees on music tickets, and confusing charges for dinner and music tickets. Tried to get in touch with manager and had a hard time, then they weren't very helpful when they did call.
Been here many times but... service has gone to pot. Food is good. But if you sit down expect $100/person and for that I expect good service. Last two visits have been disappointing. Music great. But... I really try to support my local music establishments. It’ll be rare I go here for dinner again. Sadly.
This place feels just right! Descending the stairs into a dark but sparkling room with killer jams from Jaimie Branch felt just right. It is wonderfully stylish in a way that feels like home. The waiter was calm, kind, unobtrusive. My drink was excellent, the food- lacking for the price. More vegetarian options would be nice. My cup of ice cream- perfection! The walk there is a bit stressful- many folks suffering from addiction & homelessness. It makes pleasure more necessary but also more fraught.
We came here to see the Ian Hendrickson-Smith band play. At first I had trouble making the reservation through open table but after a few tries it happened. This venue is in the heart of the tenderloin however you would never know dining in the downstairs lounge area. Our little water glasses were never empty, though we had to wait a while for the food however it was worth the wait. I had their hamburger with the lettuce slaw and the duck fat fries and my son had the fish and chips. Both were delicious.
Server seemed slammed with many people at once. Management should have brought on one more server for the night shift. Our server was super slow to attend to us despite us coming early when the restaurant was near empty. Not sure if the back of the house was having an off night but the duck fries were on the “soggy” side and should have been sent back but we were too hungry. My hamburger was super greasy/high fat, more than what I expect from a hamburger. I would recommend this place for the music and drinks ONLY. The menu selection is very limited. The food/service side of the dinner jazz club experience needs improvement.
I was double charged there. I sent many emails without answer. I am really disappointed
The music was great, but the service could be improved. The bartender upstairs didn't give my husband the type of wine he asked for, but the most expensive one on the menu instead. Our server downstairs was good, but the food runner refused to get us silverware and told us to ask our server. There also was an issue with the menus and they weren't available until 10/15 minutes after we were seated.
While I enjoyed my evening at Black Cat, I was surprised to see an extra $106 charge on my credit card that I did not authorize. I spent over $400 on dinner for 3 people and assumed the separate charge of $106 was a mistake. When my CC company followed up on this, Black Cat apparently billed my card this amount upon making the reservation via Open Table, even though the website states show are $10-$15 per person and there were only 3 of us. After reading reviews and seeing others experienced the same, I would be wary of this establishment, as it was a fun evening but not worth the $500+ price tag for a 2 hour dinner.
I wanted to give 5 stars, but on Friday I prepaid for a 3 course meal and I only received the first 2 courses. My husband got his prime rib and I still had to wait over 40 mins to get mine....I would totally recommend this place, but do not eat dinner here.
Servers were rude, music didn’t start on time
Took my girlfriend out on Valentine's Day. The band set the most romantic mood and the service was delightful. Lots of happy couples that night.
The atmosphere great. Flower petals on the stairs coming down. The music amazing. Service was terrible. Took one hour to get our drinks we ordered. Even the manager has come oner at 35 minutes and we told him still haven’t gotten our drinks so he said oh ill fix it. Still didn’t get our drinks the waitress finally came back now its been 60 min and we again had to ask about our drinks which then she immediately went and got them. The drinks were ok, food was ok way over priced for what it was. The only saving grace of the evening was the live music which partial view meant no view couldn’t see one member of the band. Was very much looking forward to this for trip to San Fransisco and left greatly disappointed. P.s I should add the couple next to us had equally frustrating time they left before they even got their dessert which was included in the pre-fixed three course price. They were seated before us and their order for food was taken 15 minutes after us.
The 3rd or 4th time I’ve been here. Great ambiance and the food is good. Drinks too pricey but you sort of expect it in a place like this. -Riggs
Easily one of the best bars in SF. Live performances daily and amazing food and staff. I love this spot and highly recommend!
The food was very good and the music was invigorating! While the food came out fast, it was a challenge finding a server to get a second round of drinks. Since we couldn’t get their attention, we decided against ordering another round. It would’ve been nice to have a door greeter at the front door since this is in a not-so clean part of town. Despite that, definitely check this place out!
Steak was overcooked and we told the server numerous times. Drinks took forever. Server didn’t care. We had to ask for some sort of comp for our night.
Good food awful service. Drink time too long, good ambience and music though.
Horrible shortage in staff. Took an hour to get my meal after my date received his. Tables are so tightly packed that my neighbors knee was in my back.
We had the salmon dish. We both agreed that it was the best salmon dish we had had in years - fresh, and cooked to perfection!
I've been to Black Cat before, but this experience was a total 180 degree difference than my previous experience. The food and ambiance were good, but the service and musician was horrible. I wasn't feeling the musician, but that wasn't the venue's fault. What was their fault was the service. My date and I arrived promptly to the venue prior to our reservation time. Seated after a short wait. Prior to being seated, we were asked if we wanted drinks. We gave our order and then after some confusion about our table (we paid for tickets, but they attempted to seat us in the back in general seating) we were seated. Once we were at our table we waited for 20 minutes before someone addressed us. We didn't get the drinks we ordered, no one to ask if we wanted food, or even water. We watched other guests received refills on water, drinks, and food without some much of a glance. Once we flagged someone down, our order was taken. Drinks arrived. My French 75 was served in a wine glass not champagne flute. Food arrive. Everything was tasty. But we had to wait another 20-30 minutes for our next drink. I actually had to get up during short break and go to the bar and put in an order for our drinks and dessert. I also had to request that my French 75 is served in a flute. Overall our experience made us feel that we were the inconvenience that night. My date said he will never go again. I would give Black Cat another chance, but I'm definitely not as eager to recommend this place.
I didn't have food but this app made me rate it. I enjoyed the music a lot and would like to come back. They really need to step up cleaning their bathrooms/presentation. They're trying to be classy but their bathrooms belong in a dive bar. I liked the Black Cat overall, it feels very unsafe in the immediate area.
Loud ambient noise makes it difficult to communicate, waiters are too much pouring water to glasses instead of asking what the customer wants to drink. Staff try to hide their drinking, with relatively small success.
The fusion jazz was nice, but still - this was my second choice due to closed Biscuits and Blues.
This was our second time going but the seats were poor.
We had a party of 4 and the two seating against the wall had a blocked view of the stage (could not see the headliner).
Great jazz club. Great vibe, good food. Saw Jonny O'Neal do a rare show outside NYC. Glad we were able to see him.
I had never heard of The Black Cat, but an east coast friend of mine alerted me that NYC pianist Johnny O'Neal would be playing there and urged me to check him out. It turned out to be a great evening. The food was excellent -- my companion said his fried chicken may have been the best he'd ever had, my wild rice risotto was tasty and the dark chocolate lava cake was to die for. And of course the music, which is why we were there in the first place, was exceptional. So 5-stars for both The Black Cat & Johnny O'Neal.
A wonderful evening of music and martinis in a room built to enjoy jazz. A San Francisco jazz den I’ll be sure to revisit soon!
I really enjoyed my date-night here! Everything was great except for the fact that even with a reservation, we waited nearly an hour for our waiter to bring water to the table.
Intimate, great artist! We are repeat patrons. What a treat!
Great vibe, music, staff, bar and dessert! I found the ticket transaction and minimum food purchase and other policies to be complicated and time consuming to navigate online.
We went to celebrate our anniversary. The show was fantastic. We love live music and the atmosphere. First they tried to sit us in the back of the restaurant when I made a reservation for a table to watch the show. We asked to move more forward and the waiter reseated us. There was also a problem where we had a wait an hour for our food while other tables were being served around us. They did give us free drinks to compensate for the lateness. We’ve had better experiences in the past at this place but will think twice before considering coming again.
What a great place!!! And parking tuned out to be easy.
Great place to fall in love
A friend and I went to see a show this past weekend at Black Cat. The venue is very cool and the artist was outstanding. The food was good as well, though I felt the menu was a bit limited. My only complaint is that for the price of the ticket to the show and the food, I would have loved for the music set to be a bit longer. At least 90 minutes vs. 60. It seemed rather pricey for a 60 minute show. Thankfully, we didn't have to rush out of there so they could seat the next group of the next set, but it would have been great to have the option to stay for the second set as well as I was guessing they may have played different songs. We really enjoyed it and I would recommend it, but would love to see longer sets. :)
Food very good, but expensive.
Band (Kenneth Whalum) was very good.
Parking was across the street.
Service was good.
