I've always liked Black Bull a lot, but this the last time I was there, the waitress took a really long time to get to our table to take our drink order. I was also disappointed that they didn't have almost a full page of the menu wasn't available including the mussels, which we really wanted and were posted on the online menu. I also feel like a tapas bar should have more seafood- think ceviche. The price and ambience make it worth coming back, but the menu could use some tweaking.
From the first step into the restaurant customer service was perfect. The bartender Steve was quick and explained everything thoroughly for first timers-his dealer choices were amazing. Off to dinner our waitress was also very knowledgeable and attentive. Food was fresh and hot, no mistakes. She was also very helpful as we had a person that was vegetarian in our group. 5 stars.
I love tapas & was really excited to try the raved Black Bull. Unfortunately, we had a 25 minute wait with reservations (we were on time) and although the menu choices were authentic, majority of the picks such as croquetas and patatas or jamon iberico were lack luster and disappointing for the quality vs price. I would highly recommend the octopus and pork tenderloin. Kitchen did a great job on those. Sangria was notable but difficult to share in large group. Overall, I still choose Cafe Iberico if I'm in the mood for tapas. Would go back for ambiance & scene only.
Our experience did not start out on a high note; we were seated at a banquet-style table, which would have been fine other than that I sat on the side that curved around, but didn't extend long enough to reach the table, so in fact my plate was not able to be in front of me and I had to lean to the side the whole time I was eating; it wasn't comfortable and didn't create the best conversational set-up for our group of 3 (we were seated like a TV family; all facing the same direction). Our server tried to explain the menu but she seemed less than interested in talking to us. Truthfully she got better and friendlier as the night went on, and then as we were leaving she did recommend that we check out the speakeasy above the restaurant, which we didn't know about (and we did check out!), but her first impression was not great. Food was just ok. There are much better tapas choices in the city. One of the members of our party is allergic to seafood, and there were very few options for us to choose as a group. It wasn't terrible, but again, if you want tapas, try another place. I WOULD, however, recommend the hidden Speakeasy upstairs!! Great and creative drinks; interesting people and atmosphere.
At end of the day we were glad to have tried the restaurant but wont rush back. Sherry was quite cold. Small plates were very very good. Paella mundane. Waiter forgot one small plate we had requested. Did not go hungry but it would have been nice. Waiter did help with very nice wine.
Small bites and Tapas. Everything was well made and tasted great. The Chicken Liver Mousse from the bar menu was exceptional. We should have ordered two. The croquettes were light and creamy. Outside dining was a little tight, but it was a great night for eating outside. Our waitress directed us to the "hidden" bar for an after dinner drink. Cocktails were even better upstairs.
Our server Victoria was very accommodating and she knew the menu like the back of her hand.
The peppers and paella dish were my favorite. I could eat an entire plate of those yummy peppers. It was unfortunate that I had to share them.
The other server Angela who helped with bringing out our order was very personable and had great positive energy. Both servers were so nice and we have already recommended your restaurant to our friends. What a great experience.
The food was good, but the service was pretty slow. We must have waited for 15 minutes for our server to come to the table. The place was not busy. She was very nice. My biggest issue with this place is paying 14 dollars for an old fashioned. What a rip That's pretty expensive for the type of place black bull is.
The staff was great. I was celebrating my Birthday and one of the employees (Paloma or Paola) offered my friends and i shots and a delicious dessert. I was a bit dissapointed for them not having patatas bravas but they had other creative tapas that we liked. Overall it was a good experience.
Came to Black Bull for the first time and loved it! My partner is European and we love Spain, so to find a little slice of heavenly jamon in Chicago was excellent. The atmosphere is really vibrant and eclectic, a greta place to relax and have conversation, get rowdy with friends over shared plates and wine, or take a special person for an intimate experience. I would be remiss if I didn't mention Bordel above which is a gorgeous secret Chicago lounge with daily events/music/performance and delicious cocktails in a sexy red light atmosphere. This place overall made us feel like home. Food is on point, drinks are delicious, service is a little slow but our server acknowledged that at the end of the meal and we got a free shot in compensation. Loved it!
Came here with my boyfriend and some family, great spot! We sat on the patio and had a pitcher of sangria and some tapas. The meat and cheese board was SO good. Also our server had so much knowledge about the menu, he made our experience that much better. The squid ink paella was amazing. He told us to scrape the bottom of the pan to get the most flavorful rice. Delicious. Can't wait to go back.
Wait staff and bar staff were fantastic - very friendly and honest about the food, not afraid to give an opinion or a recommendation. They made us feel really at home and we laughed a lot with them. Food was great - I'm no expert on Spanish "authentic" food, but I know tasty when it hits my mouth!!
the only drawback was the dining set up - the tables are long and thin and only really designed for 2 people (there were 3 of us), so 1 person had to sit in a very narrow space with their back up against the next table, which didn't feel right at all.
that said - we'll be back!!!!
There are so many other choices for tapas and Spanish better than this place. Food was mediocre (sounded and looked good but lacking flavor). Also the waiter heavily sold a signature appetizer then said it wouldn't be ready for an hour as the cook was just starting it (this was 6:30 not 4 pm). And they were out of coffee after dinner. Not well run! And food so so. Don't go.
Our waitress was very attentive and super sweet. Tapas style is my favorite way to eat and the prices weren't bad at all! For three of us we got 5 plates and a bottle of Sangria and it rounded out to $35 a person. Loves the charcuterie board - lighting the rosemary on fire to infuse the cheese adds a a unique touch.
