Black Barn Ratings and Reviews
Black barn has a great upscale and farmhouse style atmosphere. Service was great and responsive. Food itself was good though not stunning. A good choice if you want to have a variety of slow roasted and grilled meat options. The ribs were good, but the pork shank lacked flavor. I'd consider returning but would probably order something different.
Third time here since it opened several years ago. Have always really enjoyed their food. Tasty and interesting combinations, creative, unique, and delicious but this time....
Service was not good, had to ask 3 times for a glass of ice!
And had to Ask twice for bread even, after the table next to us who arrived after us was served their's.
Great appetizers, both specials on the menu. I had an entree special, porchetta, t was so dry it was barelyefible? I should have sent it back. It seemed like some else had ordered it an hour earlier, but they left it under the "warming light". Very disappointing quality.
This was my second time dining here.
I absolutely loved everything about my first visit here.
I had friends and family visiting and I talked Black Barn up so we decided to go!
This time we had an obnoxious, pompous server who thought he was on a Broadway stage.
Long story short....Being in the service industry myself as well as a server for restaurants and bars in the past, I have never requested a manager to a table in my life. The way we were spoken to and treated, this had to happen. The manager was pleasant, although based on our experience with this server I'll never return. This is upsetting because I really like this place!
We were seated outside and had no place settings , we had to take them off another table, Both ordered a salad with chicken ( $20&). It took a very long time to be served and the portion was small and the chicken was very chewy, no bread was offered.
When I asked for a little more hot coffee, the server said fine. He never returned until he brought us the check. $63 before tip for a very mediocre lunch!
Absolutely the worst resturant experience ever. We had a group of of eight and they would not seat us with only seven there. The hostess said she would seat us when the table was ready. We waited almost 30 mins. When we were finally seated we were one of only two tables occupied...the rest of the approx 50 table were empty. The service was incredibly slow and indifferent. The food was mediocre. I could go go on, but suffice it to say everything about the experience was extremely poor.
I took my mom here for a birthday brunch and we had the best time! The entire experience was unforgettable and a pleasure to all 5 senses. While the atmosphere was relaxed, the decor and aesthetics were very pleasing to the eye, food was so delicious, service was great, the musicians in the window with the park trees in the background was so nice- the talented musicians played light, bouncy, happy jazz. We can't wait to come back! Thank you, Black Barn, for such a wonderful dining experience!
We "ate" dinner at the Black Barn Friday night and it was one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. My son and I ordered an item off the menu . When it came to the table after quite a long wait, it was missing a main ingredient. When we were finally able to flag down the waitress who kept disappearing , she said they would fix the dish by adding the missing ingredient. Once again after another long wait, we found our waitress and told her it was too late to bring us our meals since the rest of our table had already eaten and it was getting late. She offered to pack up our meals for us to take home and eat as leftovers the next day. She also offered to give us one dessert for free. After another long wait and having to flag her down again, we told her never mind the dessert because it was getting too late. We asked her to take the two meals that we never ate off the bill. When she said she couldn't do that, we asked for the manager. The manager, Christine, came to the table and was extremely rude to us telling us she couldn't take the meals off the bill because we were taking them home. We told her to keep the meals and not charge us instead which again she refused to do and proceeded to turn her back on us and walk away. We will never return to the Black Barn which isn't too difficult since there is no shortage of fine restaurants in the city with good food, service and management.
The service was painfully slow at brunch despite the fact that the main dining room was not full. We waited more than 35 minutes for our entrees and even getting a drink meant flagging down the waiter. We enjoyed the food that we got - huevos rancheros and chicken and waffles -- but it wasn't worth the wait.
Pleasantly surprised by this Madison Square Park restaurant. The main dining room is rustic chic with very high ceilings and an exposed kitchen. The tables are spaced apart enough so that you can actually have a conversation with your dining companions without raising your voice or having to lean in.
The farm to table menu suits everyone, including vegetarians. It's also great for those who do not eat gluten. The food was delicious. The service was attentive but not to the point of it feeling too formal. Highly recommend.
I really love this farm to table restaurant! The food was good and so was the service!
I've been here for happy hours as well as dinner, both times we had a great time and enjoyed our meals. I especially like the diver sea scallops risotto, the roasted duck breast was really tasty too. I am still salivating on the truffle Parmesan gnocchi while writing this review.
This barn inspired restaurant offers private dinning rooms for different party size. If anyone is looking for a venue for your next special occasion, check it out.
I've been to Black Barn for a lunch and a dinner. At lunch I found it enjoyable, very good food and service, reasonable noise level. I had the Savoy cabbage salad and grilled tuna sandwich and both were very good. I went back for dinner the next day. It was very busy and I had to wait to be seated 35 minutes past my reservation and was then seated at a table that looked like it had just been added right outside the kitchen door. We were given the dinner menu which seemed interesting g if a bit limited. There seemed to be a lot coming out of the open kitchen that was not in the menu, burgers, fries, sandwiches, skewers etc., but we were not given any other options. The appetizers were pretty good and served quickly but then we waited an hour plus for our mains. The seared scallops in corn risotto were quite good but the IPA braised pork shank was tasteless and had a microscopic application of a pesto sauce. The duck breast was of good quality and properly cooked but had no sauce or seasoning. It was served with black garlic sausage which seemed an odd combination to me. The sausage was fine, but there was no discernible point of view. The volume in the dining room was so intense that conversation was impossible. There were a few bright spots in the cooking so I might try it one more time.
I chose this restaurant as part of Open Table's reward points and what a pleasant surprise. My husband and I had trouble deciding what to order because everything sounded so good. We started with baked oysters, yum, and a Kale and corn salad that was SO good I'm still thinking about it. Followed by grilled lamb chops and roasted duck breast. We were very glad to have made Black Barn our choice for rewarding ourselves. Sitting outside across from Madison Square Park was an added bonus, although the interior atmosphere was very attractive as well (just not a fan of the dining music they chose to play which would have made conversation inside tough). We'll be back.
The Live Blues Boozy Brunch was so enjoyable! The music is very low, so it is easy to enjoy the ambience but still have a conversation with no problem at all.
The food was good, but the portions were a bit small. If you're very hungry, you should plan to get an app or a side dish with your entree. My drink was tasty (The Double Black), but I found some mystery particles...but they replaced the drink with no fuss.
I've already recommended it to friends, and I will definitely be back!
Somewhat of a mixed experience . We loved the atmosphere and the food was delicious. We were sat quickly even tonight we arrived earlier than our reserved time. My biggest point of feedback is on service, which was slow. We sat for a long time with no water or even anyone greeting us. Also, our server didn't offer us information on additions l, I had to dig for that. We ordered drinks, which took nearly twenty minutes to arrive. We saw a lot of servers around, and it wasn't terrible busy. So I'm am not sure why the service aspect was so rough. When our sever was around he was polite and friendly. He was patient as I sampled a couple of wines later in the night trying to decide on my final glass. The food was awesome. Price point is what I would expect. It's worth trying IF you aren't in a hurry and don't arrive starving (we weren't either so it was ok, just not what I'd expect from a restaurant or this caliber).
Beautiful service and wine list. All dishes were excellent except rabbit which 3 in our party ordered and all were not thrilled. Duck was flavorful, though a bit undercooked. Pork also excellent. Quite pricey. I hoped for total perfection for the $$ and the experience was very close but not quite.
This was our first time at Black Barn, and we will definitely be coming back. Despite being huge, the space is warm and welcoming. The service was excellent. I had the fillet - delicious, while my friend had a beautiful salad. Servings are large, but we managed to finish everything. Highly recommend the mac-n-cheese and the apple cider donuts are heaven! Great new spot for us and we'll be recommending it to our friends!
The service was horribly slow...we were seated 15 minutes before our waiter came by. It took another 30 minutes before our dinner order was taken. The vibe was great, but the noise level was ridiculously high...we struggled to hear each other many times during conversation. The food was nothing short of excellent, but it wasn't enough to make me want to go back.
3 of us had the restaurant week menu, which was excellent.
I had the chicken Milanese sandwich that was really good.
Must try Tuna sliders, donuts and hazelnut brownies.
Service was slow especially since we had to go back to work and I was charged for a substitution without being told
Food was very tasty and didn't take too long. Staff were all very friendly. Service was good but the waiter was a bit distracted and forgot extras like sauce, pepper and salt as requested.... then didn't return with our change from the bill payment until we asked about it!
The service was very slow. The "Chicken salad" was tomatoes that were not cut up, overly large unappetizing chunks of eggplant and miniscule pieces of potato. The chicken slices were good, but it was an unacceptable salad. The wild mushrooms on sourdough were ok, but the sandwich should have been accurately labelled as grilled cheese with mushroom.
Really good restaurant, although it was so busy that the time it took just to get our appetizer was over a half hour. Great food, but very noisy inside. I would come back for a private event, or ask to sit at a table that was not soooo loud. There were only four of us, and it was still difficult to hear.
My husband and I ate here on 7/28/17 for our 5th wedding anniversary. The food was awesome. The food was brought in a timely manner. However we had to wait a while for the check. Also, our waiter neglected to tell us the specials for that evening. There was no presentation at all. We had never eaten there before so we had a few questions about the menus. We were limited to the menu. It was not until we heard the other server give our neighbors a great presentation of the specials for that evening and the wonderful wine selections that my husband and I realized that our server did not go over anything with us. The rum bread pudding is a must. Everyone was friendly and they accommodated us for our anniversary; they even gave us a free taster . I would recommend Black Barn. Food sooooo good
