Black Barn Ratings and Reviews
Great brunch place by the Flatiron District. Breaking down the review as follows:
Reservations: YES, they take reservations and was accommodating when I needed to change the number in our party. Downside, they won't seat you until your whole party is there. Totally understandable for NYC restaurants during Sunday brunch.
Ambiance: True to their name, the place looks like a barn minus the hay - thank goodness! They play live music on weekends and the place is huge in the back so they can accommodate big parties.
Service: Our server was pretty good. She was attentive and gave good suggestions on food. She could learn the menu more though esp. those that aren't as popular.
Food: They have a pretty good selection for brunch.
The corn muffins are amazing! I got the shrimp and grits for my meal and it was delicious.
Drinks were typical for brunch at $13 and were decent. They did have a champagne brunch offering for $36.
Overall, I would recommend this place and would probably come back. I would like to try them for dinner one of these days.
The service at Black Barn was very disappointing. After making a reservation weeks in advance, we arrived at the restaurant and the hostess attempted to seat us in the bar area, which has a different menu than the main dining room. When we asked to be seating in the main area, the hostess seemed "put out" and begrudgingly took us back to the main room, where there were many empty tables. The waitstaff forgot to bring us coffee at the end of the meal and neglected to bring bread (we asked for some after noticing that all the other tables had been given bread).
Food was good with nice portions. Wine was so-so.
Altogether, we spent ~3 hours at Black Barn, and felt the pace of the meal was quite slow. We often had to signal to unattentive waiters to refill our water and asked two separate people for the check after it hadn't shown up.
We won't be coming back to Black Barn.
I was looking forward to trying Black Barn. However, I must say that from the minute we walked in through the end of our meal the restaurant was a disappointment. The entrance/Tavern area is very strange and the overall mood of the restaurant is quite off. The entrance of the restaurant is an empty area with a bar and some tables and seemed almost like a waiting room. The vibe was very dreary. I thought perhaps once we went into the formal dining area the mood would be more lively but once we sat down it seemed even more awkward. It is hard to describe but the ambience was truly dreary. The music was somber almost funeral like and it was overall quiet and dark. Then we got our food and I would say it is mediocre unfortunately. The service was off as well, I often had to ask for my wine to be refilled and I waited an hour before getting a glass of wine which they forgot to order. The waiters seemed very aloof and though very nice, not diligent or attentive. I would not recommend this restaurant, the entire place from the setting/decor/ambience to food/staff needs to be revamped.
The food was great but the constant rotating staff continually tried to pull our plates before we could tell them we weren’t done as though they were trying to high speed rush us out to turn over the tables - we found this ride and annoying which greatly subtracted from the experience
We had a fun dinner here. The meatball appetizer was good. We also had the octopus and it was awesome. The three of us each had something different. The ribs were the best, butternut squash ravioli second, and the ravioli with the beets were last. Too many beets in the dish for our liking. If you love beets it would be great! Service was perfect...our water glasses were never empty and we never had to wait for anything we needed. We would return to try the happy hour/late night oyster special.
Been to Black Barn a few times. The overall experience is generally good with a challenging noise level and spotty menu choices. Beef ribs were not good, little meat, salty and over priced for what we got. Apps, desert were very good and wine choices are fabulous.
Place was very clean and looked great. Food looked wonderful until you actually ate it. The Croque madame was disappointing. The french toast looked amazing but tasted like licorice. Drinks were fantastic but $11 for banana bread sounded good until it came out and it was a cupcake. Very disappointing
Went on a Saturday night. Seated immediately. Larger than a customary two top table with plenty of privacy. Request Dimitri if you want great friendly service. Good wine options. Mushroom toast, butternut squash ravioli, octopus and olive oil poached cod were all very good. BTW the breadbasket was great and the square of butter sitting in oil drizzled with balsamic vinegar and roasted garlic was amazing Have not seen that before! Love!
Runners were friendly. Water glasses always filled. Hostesses cute and friendly
Decor sleek and rustic a la Burlington.
The food was okay. The service providers speak so fast you miss the introduction. The food is seasoned but nothing out of what a friend would've made at home with products from whole foods. The presentation is more exquisite than the food seasoning. The cocktails are tasty and a nice ambiance on a cold winter night - Black Barn.
Black Barn is exceptional. I have hosted a business dinner in a private room at the location as well as recently celebrated my spouse's birthday there. The food is well-prepared and plentiful and the service is spot-on. I highly recommend this restaurant to residents and visitors alike.
Nice place with pretty good reviews, so we decide to have our family Christmas night dinner there.
When we first arrived with a reservation made 1 week before and confirmed on the morning of the dinner they wanted to seat us in a sofa table on the bar area. After we complained that we reserved for the restaurant we were informed that on Sundays the bar was part of the restaurant and if we want to seat on the restaurant area we would have to wait at least 30 minutes. We decided to wait and 3 minutes later they found us a table on the restaurant.
The food was good, net exceptional, the service at the table was nice, not very fast but it was a crowded night. Some of us had the 7 fish meal and some went to the menu, one dish was very good, the chicken with marrons gnocchi, the other just OK.
Lunch for a group of five, perfectly comfortable seating both at our table and all around, nothing crammed together. The space is large and open, but has a cozy and warm feel from the beautiful wood everywhere and nice lighting. Wonderful open kitchen, and great side alcoves for larger parties that can feel like a private room. The food was fantastic! Fresh and delicious...all of us loved everything we had. Excellent, attentive service to top it all off. We'll be back!
Host: 1/5. Servers: 5/5. Food:2/5. Details and decorations: 4/5.
First, why do I have to make a reservation, then wait 30 minutes to be seated?
Second, the food was really cold. The French fries tasted like the were made 1 hour before they were served to me. I also had the Eggs Benedict and they were so cold that I felt I was in a cheap Icelandic Chinese buffet. The food looks and tastes like it was overly pre-prepared.
I feel Black Barn is a trendy place for people who know nothing about good food. Too expensive and no quality.
We had to wait to be seated even though we had a reservation. The receptionist initially informed us that we’d be seated “momentarily”. We inquired how much longer it would be when we waited for about 10 min, and the receptionist told us it would be another 10 min with no apology. It ended up being about 30 min of waiting. We were very confused what the point of making reservation was. The server was nice and friendly, but it was very challenging to get her attention whenever we needed her assistance. The food was good, but not good enough to make up for our initial not so great experience and service.
