Black Barn Ratings and Reviews
I used open table to find a restaurant near the theater we were seeing a show at. They offered an 8:45 time slot which was perfect. I understood the restaurant closed at 9 but assumed that wouldn't affect our experience. I was wrong. We arrive at 8:52 were seated and were immediately given our menus and informed the kitchen closed at 9 and that our waitress wanted to take our food orders before we ordered drinks. I can't even tell you how embarrassing was. First of all I chose the restaurant for to celebrate my birthday and had not only family with me but business clients. One of my family members owns several very successful restaurants and has been working in restaurant his entire life. His observation was that a chef must own or run the place because not in his wildest dreams would he ever rush a table of customers to order based on what the kitchen wants to do. If you offer an 8:45 reservation, then you better assume that people may not be ready to order by 9. That seems pretty reasonable to me. But to be rushed immediately after sitting down pretty much tainted the experience of have a nice celebratory meal. The waitress continued to not really give darn about us. She took drink orders for half the table and ran off, not to be seen. --- The food was excellent, the place is beautiful and I would go back. But... this one experience was not a very good one when I went out of my way to find a place I wanted to have a good time on my birthday at.
When I made a reservation, there was not a prefix menu specified for Valentine’s Day. Many other restaurants on open-table offered a prefix, but I specifically chose this restaurant because of the a la carts menu and no special menu on Valentine’s Day.
Sommelier was impressive and the food was grossly over portioned.
Despite arriving on time, we weren't sat until 45 minutes past our reservation time. French fries were over salted. The Brussels sprouts were way over cooked. We barely ate any of them. Would have loved to have let our waiter know, but no one ever asked us how our meal was. They seemed to do a drive by water glass refill, but that's about it.
I will say that the overall ambiance was lovely. Total upscale rustic feel. And the bone marrow and cocktails were absolutely sublime. I had high expectations for Black Barn and I'm super disappointed. I probably won't return or recommend it in the future.
Was excited about the chance to eat at Black Barn. Had read good reviews, liked the pictures and menu, and the location seemed great. However was really disappointed by a combinations of things including the service, food, and price paid. Service was not anything interesting - gentleman seemed in a rush and not interested in giving his recommendation. Food was very disappointing from start to finish (charcuterie board was weak, other main dishes were so so). The price paid was $90/person with only one drink and app/person. I know it's New York, but this felt excessive given the quality of food.
Ordered the grilled octopus app. it came with one small pulpo. Apps are meant to be shared, so the portion was inadequate. Very good none the less. Scallop entree consisted of 3 scallops, again portion size an issue. Filet mignon entree delish size expected. I really enjoyed the sunchokes. Waiter was hard to hear spoke too fast and way too low.
Excellent food, service and ambience - I had the Restaurant Week menu and it was generous in terms of choice, especially for Restaurant Week. I went early, at 11:30am, and had a relatively quiet dining experience, but the tables were all full and the lobby was full of awaiting diners by 12:30pm.
