An exceptionally stylish supper club, civilized speakeasy, a sophisticated saloon. Each of these "personae" is housed in a soaring two-story interior distinguished by a gently curving mahogany bar, fluted columns with ornate capitals, stunning original art, plush banquettes, cozy booths, starched linens, glittering glasses, and polished flatware. Overall, the ambiance is pure 1930's and 1940's - tasteful art moderne reminiscent of the glory days of Cunard and French Line ships. Fashionable and glamorous are the hallmarks. Trendy is simply not a part of the BIX culture. The clientele at BIX ranges from San Francisco movers-and-shakers to "savvy travelers" - owner Doug Biederbeck's term for the many diners in the know from out of town who patronize his establishment. All of them step from the featureless alley into another world - a world of superb cookery and libations, of sparkling service, of stylish nostalgia, of polished live jazz. That world is BIX.

BIX Ratings and Reviews
Great atmosphere. Great service. Food is terrible!! When a high end restaurant cannot execute well on a simple strip steak.....disastrous!! Almost like homogenized meat, either instantly defrosted in a microwave or even worse, boiled before being grilles. Bread pudding was a microwaved brownie mess. Shame. Great potential. Terrible execution.
I had high expectations as I've heard great things about Bix. However, my dish was very disappointing. I ordered the lobster spaghetti only to find 3 small pieces of lobster and tons of tomatoes that looked like lobster as the lighting was tricky to see that it wasn't. The server said it is always measured at 2 ozs of lobster meat which is not even a serving of 4ozs for a descent protein serving. It was very pricey at $38. It was very tasty and covered with tomatoes and a small serving of pasta but is not worth $38... Maybe at most I would pay $24 for that portion. It didn't come with anything else. My husband's burger was descent but then again it was also $38 and over priced.
I had my tab transferred to my bill and halfway through the meal, the manager brought me my card. When it was time to py the bill, I was confused if I had to give my card back or it had automatically been charged to my card, so I went to the host with my reciept to ask if it had been paid for and he had said we are all set and good to go. After leaving, I received a call from the host and manager with then yelling at me on the phone saying I need to turn around to pay the bill despite checking with the host beforehand to make sure the bill was settled. The manager was extremely rude and I was left so upset because he made it seem as if I was in the wrong. I highly do not recommend this place due to its poor leadership and terrible service.
One of our favorite places to go in San Francisco.......it never disappoints! If you are looking for modern, hip, nouvelle, avant guard, eclectic then forget Bix.......it is something altogether different from those descriptions. I would call it “classic Bogart”. If you don’t have a feeling for what that means, you are probably too young to appreciate Bix. Piano to set a mood yet not so loud that you can’t carry on a conversation, great martinis, good food, and an atmosphere to remember......that is Bix.
We had such a great experience yesterday. We were seated pretty fast. The hostess and all of the servers were wonderful. We ordered 2 appetizers-potatoes pillows with caviar and devil eggs-were delicious. For entrees we ordered a steak and a lobster spaghetti. The steak was amazing, very tender, and a superb flavor. The lobster pasta was OK. I wish it had more lobster. The desert dishes were yummy! We had a banana foster and some unique cheesecake with buckwheat honey ice cream. All of the drinks were awesome! The decor was gorgeous. The pianist was incredible. We stayed long enough to listen to the jazz band and they were really good. We can't wait to come back next time...
I won't forget this year's birthday! Bix was perfect in every way....delicious food, tasty drinks (we enjoyed after dinner cocktails at the bar), attentive servers and live jazz music. I love the cozy, classy atmosphere of Bix and would like to return with friends.
Went here for a law school reunion dinner. We had a reservation for 8:30 and didn't get seated until about 9 pm. Our server was great, especially for having to deal with so many lawyers. We were worried the jazz music would be too loud, but it ended up being a nice touch. The food was good, but not everything was amazing. I got the burger, not realizing it's an open face burger. I only ate about half of it. Overall, the experience was a good one and I would go back, but it's not of the best restaurants I have been to in SF and it's fairly expensive.
Food was very good, drinks were good, but had to be the smallest martinis I have ever seen. Service was borderline terrible as it took 45 minutes in between the appetizers and the main course. Our server was taking care of too many tables and could have used some help. I still liked the experience, the atmosphere, live music and the food is very good.
We went to Bix for a friend's birthday and everything was excellent! The space and atmosphere are wonderful, they brought a birthday card for my friend as soon as we arrived, food was great, and gave a birthday dessert at the end. The live jazz made the night, definitely recommend!
Haven't been to Bix in years, but it was one of my favorite go to spots when I lived in the City 20 years ago. Bix has endured for a reason, it is authentic and has remained largely unchanged. The classic supper club ambiance, fantastic bar and amazing drinks, even before hand crafted cocktails became all the rage, makes this a special place. Food is very good, but not exceptional, but that's not the reason I go. I go to experience the live music, have a martini and just soak in the amazing atmosphere.
Went for partners birthday and we both had to sit having given our coats in on arrival. We sat cold, too embarrassed to ask for it coats to be returned to eat in. Fortunately, the waiting staff were efficient and rushed each course through encouraging us to leave, which we did after paying over the top price for a nice but not exceptional meal. It was also my partner's birthday, a small card was provided, but no courtesy chocolate or other celebratory notion. Quite disappointing experience.
I would recommend Bix. The service and ambience were excellent. The restaurant called to confirm the reservation which was appreciated and when we arrived, the hostess was very pleasant. I especially appreciated that they offered to hold and put my jacket away and seated us promptly. I thoroughly enjoyed the ambiance and the decor as it felt as if we were transplanted back to the twenties.
Each of our meals were prepared nicely and seasoned perfectly. The only downside was there was no vegetarian option for an entree so I had to order 2 vegetable sides which were still nice. For the lack of a veggie entree option and that they were out of creme brûlée I scored the food category 4 stars (otherwise it would have been 5).
Overall the evening was fine, and our waitperson was attentive and skillful. Great old fashionds for cocktails. Petrale Sole and Sea Bass main courses were both good, but the fish was put on the wrong plates-I ended up with sea bass and haricots verts and Linda ended up with Petrale Sole with fennel shrimp and basil. We didn't notice it until the waiter had left, and chose not to mention it, but did transfer the haricots verts to the other plate. Dessert was bananas foster and was outstanding. Sancerre by the glass. We may try upstairs next time, as our table was nice but the overall noise level was high-we have hearing handicaps.
We'll be back. John Stedman.
Our dinner was to celebrate my husband’s last day in government service. The Bix staff went out of their way to make sure it was absolutely perfect. We had a table that was removed enough from the bar/music to give toasts but close enough to enjoy the festive atmosphere that makes Bix so special. Our waiter (Jorge) was so welcoming and gave great suggestions on food and wine. We are so grateful! Thank you!
The food was terrific, and the room is lovely to look at. One of the draws for us was "live music." We could not hear the music. We could barely hear ourselves think. The room's acoustics are horrendous - you leave nearly deafened. Service was the bare minimum - our waitress seemed to consider us an afterthought. For the price you'll pay, look elsewhere.
