About BIX

An exceptionally stylish supper club, civilized speakeasy, a sophisticated saloon. Each of these "personae" is housed in a soaring two-story interior distinguished by a gently curving mahogany bar, fluted columns with ornate capitals, stunning original art, plush banquettes, cozy booths, starched linens, glittering glasses, and polished flatware. Overall, the ambiance is pure 1930's and 1940's - tasteful art moderne reminiscent of the glory days of Cunard and French Line ships. Fashionable and glamorous are the hallmarks. Trendy is simply not a part of the BIX culture. The clientele at BIX ranges from San Francisco movers-and-shakers to "savvy travelers" - owner Doug Biederbeck's term for the many diners in the know from out of town who patronize his establishment. All of them step from the featureless alley into another world - a world of superb cookery and libations, of sparkling service, of stylish nostalgia, of polished live jazz. That world is BIX.

I would recommend Bix. The service and ambience were excellent. The restaurant called to confirm the reservation which was appreciated and when we arrived, the hostess was very pleasant. I especially appreciated that they offered to hold and put my jacket away and seated us promptly. I thoroughly enjoyed the ambiance and the decor as it felt as if we were transplanted back to the twenties.

Each of our meals were prepared nicely and seasoned perfectly. The only downside was there was no vegetarian option for an entree so I had to order 2 vegetable sides which were still nice. For the lack of a veggie entree option and that they were out of creme brûlée I scored the food category 4 stars (otherwise it would have been 5).

Overall the evening was fine, and our waitperson was attentive and skillful. Great old fashionds for cocktails. Petrale Sole and Sea Bass main courses were both good, but the fish was put on the wrong plates-I ended up with sea bass and haricots verts and Linda ended up with Petrale Sole with fennel shrimp and basil. We didn't notice it until the waiter had left, and chose not to mention it, but did transfer the haricots verts to the other plate. Dessert was bananas foster and was outstanding. Sancerre by the glass. We may try upstairs next time, as our table was nice but the overall noise level was high-we have hearing handicaps.

We'll be back. John Stedman.

Ambiance and Dining Experience was overall really good, but the water guy was hovering almost non-stop to the point that it was uncomfortable.

Our dinner was to celebrate my husband’s last day in government service. The Bix staff went out of their way to make sure it was absolutely perfect. We had a table that was removed enough from the bar/music to give toasts but close enough to enjoy the festive atmosphere that makes Bix so special. Our waiter (Jorge) was so welcoming and gave great suggestions on food and wine. We are so grateful! Thank you!

The food was terrific, and the room is lovely to look at. One of the draws for us was "live music." We could not hear the music. We could barely hear ourselves think. The room's acoustics are horrendous - you leave nearly deafened. Service was the bare minimum - our waitress seemed to consider us an afterthought. For the price you'll pay, look elsewhere.

Bix is a rare find in San Francisco. It has a speakeasy vibe, while also being a bit upscale. The food is above average (not the best I’ve had), and reasonably priced, but you should come for the ambiance. Dark, mysterious, with a jazzy atmosphere. Definitely a dress-up kind of place, it’s perfect for a romantic dinner, an anniversary, or dining in style.

NYE was a rip-off! Super expensive, less than great quality food, not exciting music, pushed to get dining done although had been told that 9pm was last seating, obviously was not. Will not do this again. Bix sort of ruined for a while.

Bix is a two-level restaurant with live jazz on the main floor as a big attraction. When I confirmed our reservation for 4 with Bix, I specifically requested a table on the upper level, as our companion couple are hearing impaired and the live music would be too loud for any conversation with them on the ground floor.

When we arrived exactly on time for our res, half the tables on the ground floor were available but the “hostess” (I use the term loosely) informed me that there were no tables available on the upper level. When I explained that I had specifically requested an upstairs table, she was neither concerned nor apologetic — but blithely suggested that we could wait about half an hour if we wished to be seated upstairs.

We chose not to delay our meal that long, but spent the entire evening in silence at our table because (as anticipated) the music made socializing with our guests impossible. The food was fine, the table service was fine, and the overall ambiance of the restaurant was, as always, fine - but the totally unacceptable performance of the hostess and the lack of effort by Bix to honor the request that I made when confirming our reservation ruined a celebratory evening.

We have been regulars; we won’t be back.

1 of my favorites in SF. I try to dine there at least once every time I'm in SF. Creative food, good drinks, great atmosphere, two story space yet intimate & mural over the bar.
Servers very knowledgeable about most menus items but could be more informed about oyster options.

I have been searching for a nice jazz club to take my boyfriend for dinner. I decided to look for one on our trip to San Francisco. I am very happy someone recommended Bix to me! We asked our waiter for his recommendation for an app because my date wanted to try the Brazilian Quiejo Fritters, he told us very honestly they were not his favorite which I always appreciate. He then brought us out some for us to try which was so nice! We ended up ordering the crab rolls and they were super tasty, but definitely on the small side. For our meals we got the duck and the seabass, both were very good and well prepared. The jazz band started as we were coming to the end of our meals so we decided to order dessert so we could hang out a little longer. We ordered the butterscotch creme brulee, it was tasty but not the highlight of my dinner. I really enjoyed the live band, the atmosphere, and the friendly service. I would definitely go here again when I come back to San Fran.

My husband and I have been dining at Bix since 1991 and have always had great drinks, wine and meals.

My mother in-law was coming in for the holidays and I thought Bix would be a great spot for us to dine with my girlfriend. We requested and got a table on the first floor. The banquet seating is good however my mother in-law was about 10" lower than me due to the seat cushion. She felt very small and she is my same height. I should have asked for another table or an extra cushion so we weren't looking down at her.

We had excellent cocktails and appetizers, Caviar pillows, crab roll and meatballs. We waited for an extended amount of time for our entrees, dover sole and chicken hash. The dover sole was cold and the chicken hash was luke warm at the most. The fish was still rare inside. The server sent the fish back and returned after I had finished my chicken hash and the portion size was half of what was originally served.

We ordered the creme brulee for desert and it isn't your traditional creme brulee which was disappointing.

I was very upset when we left because I was looking forward to an enjoyable holiday dining experience. I was quite surprised that our server didn't acknowledge the entrees by offering a cup of coffee or the desert we ordered "on the house". I will return for drinks however dining will not be happening anytime soon.

From the SECOND you walk through the front door, the great service starts! The food was GREAT. I used to go to Bix all the time and moved my office, so it's a bit far. The same level of service I remember and the food is fantastic. There were 5 of us and when the waitress brought our appetizers, she made sure everyone had one. That to me is the sign of a great restaurant. I highly recommend anything on the menu. Love this place!!

 (San Francisco)·Dined on December 21, 2017

The star here is the location, ambiance, and service, and LIVE MUSIC more so than the food ( which was above average but not killer outstanding). Located in the Jackson Square area, close to the Transamerica Pyramid, in a dark and narrow alley ( appropriately named Gold Street) this gem of a building sits in the heart of SF's historic Barbary Coast . I was told by one of the old timer staff this is the building was used to weigh gold during the SF Gold Rush days. The location and history of the restaurant makes it a great place to take out-of-town guests, or to celebrate a special occasion.

Food wise, I'll give it an 8 / 10. We had the bone marrow and foie gras to start. Bone marrow could have been roasted in higher heat to give it a nice char, but it was OK. Foie Gras was scrumptious - luxurious and smooth like butter. For entree, we shared the sea bass and lamb T-bone , with sides of brussel sprouts and parmesen fries. The fries were just ordinary fries served in a small bowl - no presentation. The sprouts were soft leaves, not the roasted buds that I was expecting .

The sea bass had a fishy smell (ugh) even before it was set on the table. But surprisingly tasted OK - just OK. Portions were small - not a good value for $37. The lamb T-Bone was much better. Since we wanted to split 2 entrees, the server offered to have the TBone sliced into medallions . The lamb was flavorful and just the right doneness - pink.

For dessert we ordered the banana foster which was no more than a scoop of vanilla ice cream with the"banana foster" part surrounding it. Don't get your hopes high on this dessert. It's nothing special. The banana foster is just sliced bananas bathed in a butter /brown sugar syrupy sauce, with pecans. Save you calories and $ and order some other dessert .

Overall, I still think this restaurant deserves your consideration if you're looking for a unique San Francisco supper club. There aint' many like it.

I’ve been here several times and the review is always the same. Love the ambiance and live music but the service is fair at best and the food is marginal. Things don't stay the same, unfortunately. Deviled eggs are no longer showered with shaved truffles, but lots of mayo. Way too much mayo. Steak tartar is a much smaller portion, mixed by an inexperienced server, very grainy. Salad had at least two engredients missing. Overall, sure trip down the memory lane and it is worth the effort, but it is not what it used to be. In its defense, they may have hired a new, less talented chef, or maybe had a substitutes chef on the evening we visited.

We were thrown off by Bix’s alley location., but the place did not disappoint. It was already pretty busy when we arrived at 7pm, but we were seated right away in a cozy little nook. The waiter was in point and assisted with our drink selection. The food was delicious and well portioned. Needless to say, we left quite satisfied and were only disappointed that we would miss the jazz trio that was about to play.

I have gone to Bix a lot in the past and enjoyed it. However, it has now turned into a mill where the major goal is to get you out as fast as possible and to TURN THOSE TABLES. I went there tonight with a friend I haven't seen in years. We felt so rushed to order and the server and the manager kept going to every table to keep people moving. The second my cocktail was deposited, she asked if we had decided on dinner. I said we'd like about 10 minutes to chat and the manager then came back TWICE in 15 minutes to take our order. I asked if we could have bread and he said that would only be given after we had placed our order. We left saying it would be more relaxing at McDonalds. When you're paying $40 per entry, $15 for cocktails and $20 for a glass of Zinfandel, being rushed to this extent is not acceptable. So, yes, you did get us out in under 90 minutes but I will no longer be making reservations at BIX.

We were excited to visit Bix for the first time since we live round the corner had heard from many people that it was wonderful and hoped to make it a regular, but unfortunately we were underwhelmed. The food did not live up to expectations, particularly given the price. But we will try it again and hope for a better experience. Perhaps it was the menu options we selected. The crab roll appetizer was totally delicious, but the chicken hash, very disappointing and the duck also not the best.
