From the SECOND you walk through the front door, the great service starts! The food was GREAT. I used to go to Bix all the time and moved my office, so it's a bit far. The same level of service I remember and the food is fantastic. There were 5 of us and when the waitress brought our appetizers, she made sure everyone had one. That to me is the sign of a great restaurant. I highly recommend anything on the menu. Love this place!!
The star here is the location, ambiance, and service, and LIVE MUSIC more so than the food ( which was above average but not killer outstanding). Located in the Jackson Square area, close to the Transamerica Pyramid, in a dark and narrow alley ( appropriately named Gold Street) this gem of a building sits in the heart of SF's historic Barbary Coast . I was told by one of the old timer staff this is the building was used to weigh gold during the SF Gold Rush days. The location and history of the restaurant makes it a great place to take out-of-town guests, or to celebrate a special occasion.
Food wise, I'll give it an 8 / 10. We had the bone marrow and foie gras to start. Bone marrow could have been roasted in higher heat to give it a nice char, but it was OK. Foie Gras was scrumptious - luxurious and smooth like butter. For entree, we shared the sea bass and lamb T-bone , with sides of brussel sprouts and parmesen fries. The fries were just ordinary fries served in a small bowl - no presentation. The sprouts were soft leaves, not the roasted buds that I was expecting .
The sea bass had a fishy smell (ugh) even before it was set on the table. But surprisingly tasted OK - just OK. Portions were small - not a good value for $37. The lamb T-Bone was much better. Since we wanted to split 2 entrees, the server offered to have the TBone sliced into medallions . The lamb was flavorful and just the right doneness - pink.
For dessert we ordered the banana foster which was no more than a scoop of vanilla ice cream with the"banana foster" part surrounding it. Don't get your hopes high on this dessert. It's nothing special. The banana foster is just sliced bananas bathed in a butter /brown sugar syrupy sauce, with pecans. Save you calories and $ and order some other dessert .
Overall, I still think this restaurant deserves your consideration if you're looking for a unique San Francisco supper club. There aint' many like it.
The food was excellent and we loved the ambiance! Thank you!
I’ve been here several times and the review is always the same. Love the ambiance and live music but the service is fair at best and the food is marginal. Each time, I hope for a better outcome, but’s it’s consistently average. Good for a drink and some live music, but much better options in the city to chose from...
Fabulous restaurant ! The ambience the attentive staff.. the amazing bartenders.
Things don't stay the same, unfortunately. Deviled eggs are no longer showered with shaved truffles, but lots of mayo. Way too much mayo. Steak tartar is a much smaller portion, mixed by an inexperienced server, very grainy. Salad had at least two engredients missing. Overall, sure trip down the memory lane and it is worth the effort, but it is not what it used to be. In its defense, they may have hired a new, less talented chef, or maybe had a substitutes chef on the evening we visited.
What a fun jam packed exciting place. The food and service were very good, and the live music was great. Unfortunately we were at a table that I had to face the wall so I could not see everything going on in the room, but luckily I had my beautiful wife to look at. Definitely a place to go when in SF.
It's like no other restaurant. Music, atmosphere and food, outstanding!
We were thrown off by Bix’s alley location., but the place did not disappoint. It was already pretty busy when we arrived at 7pm, but we were seated right away in a cozy little nook. The waiter was in point and assisted with our drink selection. The food was delicious and well portioned. Needless to say, we left quite satisfied and were only disappointed that we would miss the jazz trio that was about to play.
I have gone to Bix a lot in the past and enjoyed it. However, it has now turned into a mill where the major goal is to get you out as fast as possible and to TURN THOSE TABLES. I went there tonight with a friend I haven't seen in years. We felt so rushed to order and the server and the manager kept going to every table to keep people moving. The second my cocktail was deposited, she asked if we had decided on dinner. I said we'd like about 10 minutes to chat and the manager then came back TWICE in 15 minutes to take our order. I asked if we could have bread and he said that would only be given after we had placed our order. We left saying it would be more relaxing at McDonalds. When you're paying $40 per entry, $15 for cocktails and $20 for a glass of Zinfandel, being rushed to this extent is not acceptable. So, yes, you did get us out in under 90 minutes but I will no longer be making reservations at BIX.
We were excited to visit Bix for the first time since we live round the corner had heard from many people that it was wonderful and hoped to make it a regular, but unfortunately we were underwhelmed. The food did not live up to expectations, particularly given the price. But we will try it again and hope for a better experience. Perhaps it was the menu options we selected. The crab roll appetizer was totally delicious, but the chicken hash, very disappointing and the duck also not the best.
Everything was great!
The Lobstet Spaghetti was outstanding!
We are from Portland Oregon but will surely come back to BIX when we visit the city again.
The service was pretty good and the live music was great. Seating was on top of other guests. The food was just ok. I was expecting much better based on the reviews but my husband and I both left disappointed in the quality of food.
Food, drinks, and service were all top notch!
Wonderful SF historic gem - beautiful and delicious
We didn't have a very good experience. Felt like we were rushed, not able to enjoy the wine with the meal.
Excellent restaurant excellent and courteous service
Location was convenient for Peter Pap's rug shop, which is fantastic. Food high variance in quality to our taste--marrow dish great; ceviche worst I've ever had. Pork chop special was disappointing blah. Total invoice was a knock-out. I'd not go back except for the marrow dish--an appetizer at $19. The ginger beer, which I order wherever I go, was cutesy-wootsy small bottle serving fully priced and, not to my amateur's palate, differently tasting from most others I've had. Ambience and service good. Piano good; not obtrusive. Breaks seemed more frequent than the audience needed [union rules?].
Bix has been around forever and I keep coming back. The atmosphere is tops! This is what fine dining should be. Food is outstanding- more meaty than veggie though. I love coming here and will keep returning. And now I live in the neighborhood!
Great server, wine, pasta and overall decor of the restaurant!
Food mediocre; not a good value given the price. Background jazz was very good
Wonderful food, great service, nice live music....a must for jazz lovers
Waiter and manager were so rude and made our party of 10 feel so uncomfortable. We decided to leave after drinks due to our treatment and they made us pay $25 per person for deciding to leave on our reservation. I will never be back and have nothing good to say about this place, overhyped and easily the worst service I’ve experienced in SF
Bix is out of this world delicious. The restaurant is beautiful and food divine! I will definitely be back.
I took my lady here for our anniversary and I we were not disappointed. The ambiance was great. It had low lit(not too low) lighting, the look and feel to the place makes you feel like your in an old jazz restaurant/club. The live jazz music was smooth, relaxing and not loud. The place looks great and it was equally matched in quality with the food and the service. The special requests I made to folks there exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend going to Bix.
Thanks again Bix! You were great!
Phenomenal ambience which reminded me of the Prohibition Era. Very nostalgic with undertones of romance. The location being in an alleyway inspired the perception of rebelliousness with an edge of class. The cuisine was exquisite and well received. I highly recommend this restaurant because it is so much more than food and music...it’s an experience!
Every dish I have ever had at Bix was memorable- a dining experience like this is increasingly hard to find. Excellent food, excellent experience. One star off because I requested a table away from doors and was placed right next to the kitchen. They were able to move us though.
We are here for my boyfriend’s birthday because he is a huge jazz fans. I booked a table 5 days in advance at 9:30 Saturday and arrived at 9:00. The staff is quite friendly and told us to wait by the bar, it was a really busy night and the bar was crowded, we tried to order drinks by the bar and apparently the bartender was super impatient and kind of rude, I asked which cocktail on this menu is sweet, and then he just answered “i would make you something sweet.” Which was not what I am asking.
Except for that, everything happened in this restaurant is fantastic. The service is really good and every waiter/waitress is smiling and you can tell they enjoy the restaurant too.
We had a small dinner beforehand so we only ordered two drinks, one appetizer (marrow), one main to share(duck breast), and one dessert(banana forest). I recommend everything I ordered especially the duck! the best duck I’ve ever had! The waiter even share the plate into two different plate for us, made me feel so being taken care of :)
I will come again next time and try some other swanky cocktails and other amazing looking food!
our server was amazing; friendly, professional and very efficient
her recommendations were spot on; tried them all and they were amazing!!
can' t wait until next time
thanks for a great evening
The host was outright mean. Made me cry. We were celebrating a birthday.
Bday The service was great the ambience was wonderful the food was off the hook the best bartender around is Brad Avey our server for our meal was just as good
My favorite restaurant in the country and go-to place for special occasions. I consider it the classiest restaurant in the city as the ambiance, service, friendliness and bar service can't be beat. Add in a great menu with choices for everyone, good value, great food, great jazz and the most handsome room in the city. Service from the GM to the bartenders to service staff is tops and friendly unlike many SF restaurants.
I have been to Bix many times over the years. While my review is focused on my most recent dining experience, it also encapsulates perspective from 20+ years of dining here. In a nutshell: the physical restaurant itself is quite nice, the service is rushed and the food is perfectly adequate.
The appetizers are extremely expensive for what you get. My $13 Caesar salad had precisely 4 romaine lettuce leaves to go with the croutons and dressing. Really? Is there a shortage on lettuce? The $29 burger, while good, has nothing special enough about it to justify the price. I can say the same for the bulk of the menu.
Running a business in San Francisco is expensive; I get it. I support local restaurants and typically leave a 25-35% tip, particularly when I get the magic combo of great food and great service. Frankly, I would not grouse about prices at Bix if not for one issue: service. Good service or mediocre service both cost the restaurant the same. Over the years, the quality of service at Bix continues to drop.
I do not go to a higher end restaurant with the expectation that the staff will try to turn a dinner table in 60 min or less. My dinner was pressed from beginning to end by both staff and management and was really off-putting. That said, the most interesting part came at the end. Within moments of delivering dessert and coffee, the bill was presented. (We had not asked for the bill.) When neither my dinner companion nor I instantly put up a credit card, the waiter started coming by every few minutes and picking up the folio. After a few attempts, the manager took over. Never once were we asked if we would like more coffee or water. I wish I could say this was the first time I had received less than optimal service. Sadly, this is not the case. Additionally, for the first time since the late 1980’s, tonight I walked out of Bix wondering if I will ever bother to go back.
Was there for a business meeting. It was louder than we had hoped, but everything worked out. Food and drinks were great. The service was VERY good.
Good, not great. Bix does have a great atmosphere. A bit pricey for what you get but solid
Hey Guys, this place was fun, i took my boyfriend there for his birthday, they gave us a great table and they brought out the cake with a candle ! All in all a great night !
Wonderful restaurant great food drinks and the service was outstanding
Bix is my favorite restaurant in San Francisco. Amazing food, service and ambiance. Very consistent as I've been going there for 20 years and never had a bad experience.
