Amazing ambiance, food and service!! Our server was Nicole. Very personable!! She was great!! Would highly recommend this restaurant!!
Have loved BIX for many years, recently went back after a few years and is still as lovely as it was years ago, the ambiance is superb, it transports me to a different time, service is outstanding, and love the food, cannot wait until the 21st., to go back.
Excellent food and service. Great environment.
Nice spot and delicious martinis. Booths are great upstairs, although a bit low, but good view and the live jazz was a nice treat.
I love eating at Bix. The food, service and ambiance are always outstanding.
Everything was wonderful for a birthday date, including a small desert. Service was
excellent, good food choices and nice music by Lipskin!
I will be back. Valerie Pinkert
When you go to Bix it is like being transported back in time to the late 1930's !! I keep waiting for Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers to waltz down the staircase into the main restaurant.
The music was so lovely !! Our server was fabulous I don’t remember her name but she had brown hair and we were upstairs! My boyfriend and I celebrated our anniversary and the food was amazing :)
This is an amazing restaurant. The atmosphere and decor are beyond compare. The staff is welcoming and several servers brought food and drinks to our table and interacted with us. We had an incredible experience!
Not my first trip there. Never disappoints. No matter where you sit, music fills the joint. Create takes on items is a welcomed surprised. I recommend this place all the time and no one has said they had a bad experience, only positive.
First time going to this restaurant. It was like going back to a Art Deco style place. The bar was lively and a great bartender ( tall & bald) who was professional , remembered our re order. He was great! The bar was hoping as well as the dining area. The piano player and great accompanist, somewhat drowned out still added to the ambience.
NOTE the martini glasses seemed small , I like full regular martin glasses. But the drinks well made.
Dinner, the bone marrows, several and well made, and the soft shell crab , perfect. I had the deviled eggs, it could have had a little more spice, but nicely presented. The chicken hash , consisted of 2 patties with a cheese sauce. Filling and an abstract take on hash. Our server, was great, very thorough and she added added to the ambience.
Such an amazing date night dinner experience! Great service, incredible food, and an even more incredible ambiance. The live jazz is amazing and you feel as if you're in a speakesy from the twenties - will definitely be returning!
Great to see that after thirty years the place looks great and is still a fun place for a special romantic evening. The food and service were excellent and our table was perfectly located.
With all the restaurants in San Francisco, Bix still stands out. Will definitely be coming back again soon.
I'll start by saying I thought I loved Bix. I've visited many times, on many special occasions, and always had an amazing time. Recalling these experiences, I thought this would be a "can't miss" for a romantic birthday dinner with my girlfriend, who had never visited before. To suffice: I "missed".
We were greeted by the host, who promptly seated us at a prime table downstairs, wishing my girlfriend a happy birthday. As soon as the "handoff" was made from the host to the server, the night took a bad turn.
Our waiter rushed us through the entire night. Despite his eagerness to turn tables, we took our time, ordering 2 cocktails each, and 3 appetizers (the soft shell crab, the crab rolls, and a dozen oysters). Plates were served, but no words about which oysters were which varietal, which seems common at even the most basic of oyster bars. Then, the waiter came by and without a word carelessly tried to remove the platter before we had finished. The silver lining to the apps was the soft shell crab was good, even despite the relentless pestering as to what we wanted for our mains. Tip: People don't come to a place like Bix to be rushed through their meal and sent on their way. The ambiance is a paramount part of the experience, but I digress.
After we finishing apps, we ordered (she had lobster spaghetti, I had the aged NY Strip, with a side of truffle fries). Immediately after ordering, the waiter poured our bottle of wine, but only in my glass (??). We acquitted and I simply poured her glass for her.
Our meals arrived room temperature, my steak dry and flavorless. The lobster spaghetti was good (stole a few bites), but had about 3 pieces of lobster in the whole plate.
The waiter returned after about 45 minutes, again hustling us and asking what we wanted for dessert. We ordered the black forest cake, which was dropped off without a word.
I'm very hopeful this is an anomaly, otherwise, I'll find it hard to return. Not worth the $350 bill for 2 people.
I have been to Bix previously, but took a friend the other night for his first time. We arrived a few minutes early, so went to the bar. Our Hostess came 5 minutes later letting us know our table was ready. Bix has an downstairs and open upstairs. We were seating downstairs, in a corner near the music in a two person booth. My friend was thrilled. The food was to die for. I had the potato "tots" with crème fraiche and caviar - delicious! Then we both had the soft shell crab which was the best I've ever had!! Service was impeccable. The music consisted of a piano player and singer singing blues and classics. This is a GREAT place to go!!
Excellent service and ambiance!
One of my favorite places to eat in SF! Great cocktails! And our server was super great! I can't wait to come to Bix again.
BIX was one of my favorite SF spots when I lived in San Francisco in the '90s, and was one of the places I've missed since I changed careers and moved years ago. So I had looked forward to taking my wife there when we visited San Francisco recently. But the fact is, it was even better than I had remembered it. The food was spectacular, and the service was outstanding. Live jazz piano, great ambiance, and that speakeasy theme - what could be better than that? . It's still one of the great San Francisco spots, and I think if anything, it has become even more wonderful over the years.
Memorable dining experience. We had not visited recently & after this meal I wonder why. Excellent everything.
So fabulous. Glamorous atmosphere! Delicious food!
This place has been here for 30 years, and it just as good as when it opened.
I've been a Bix lover for years and once again they met my high expectations. the bar makes amazing drinks. The ambiance is dark-- you forget the outside world and are focused on your table, your food, and the subtle sound of the live music. The service is kind, respectable, professional, and not stodgy. I've never felt out of place and always felt treated. I'll keep returning and singing it's praises.
Great menu, but only average execution on the food. Best things we had tonight were the Tattinger champagne and the desert. Scallops and steak entrees were passable, but steak was tough for medium rare and lacked flavor. Scallops were above average but didn't blow us away.
Service was excellent, from hostess to busser. Not a single complaint for front of house.
Everything I expected from a nice restaurant
We went to Bix for our anniversary dinner. I loved the special touch of adding a note on our table that wished us a happy anniversary. These small gestures really do count!
Everything was perfect as usual!! Happy 30th Birthday Bix!!🎉🍾
Had a great night at Bix. Live music mixed with incredible food and drinks! Beautiful locale and experiance!
fantastic, the restaurant and staff get better with age, can`t wait for the 50th anniversary
I had held Bix in high regard though it had been a few years since we had been here. We're semi-foodies, I would say (not hardcore or snobs). As a fine dining restaurant, we just found the food to be mediocre without much distinctive flavor. The steak tartar (mixed fresh at our table) was quite bland. The duck breast entree seemed quickly prepared and not allowed to really gather flavor: still some thicker fat on the breast without being completely seared/crisped, cherries and mushrooms that were part of the demi-glaze were more raw than cooked/tender didn't gel well. The lamb chops had more stringy fat throughout the meat rather than the typical fat around the outside. Our server was basically good, but didn't really enquire much about the meal. When leaving, we had a great conversation about the meal with the host who really probed when we said the food was just okay. Overall, It was just so-so during this visit and we didn't bother with dessert after the main courses. I hope the chef (or junior chef?) was just having an off night, but I'm reluctant to go back at this point.
Another great evening at BIX. Excellent Food, Service and just right Ambiance. Live Music, full house (never over crowded) and you can still carry on a conversation. It has everything you want in a fine dining establishment. A great Bar, plenty of choices on the menu and the wine list without needing to feel that you have to study up for weeks. They never rush you. You are right in the middle of the City, but in a separate world once you walk through the door. My only regret is that my companion and I no longer live in the City, therefore no after-dinner drinks.
Celebrating its 30th anniversary the week we had dinner, Bix is an SF classic, and one of the best restaurants in town. The room itself is a stylish, throw-back treat with a 1940s-50s vibe. You could imagine Bogie and Bacall filming or simply having dinner here. Service is excellent both at the bar and in the dining room. On the evening we ate here, the menu included several items from when Bix first opened, including Waldorf Salad, chicken hash, lamp chops, and more. The live jazz added a festive touch for our Monday night meal; unfortunately, at times it was a touch too loud, making it difficult to carry on a conversation. I love going to Bix during the week; the reservation practically glows in my calendar and acts as a beacon of hope during my work day.
Great place for just about every occasion. There was people in casual clothes and dress up. Great bar and wine list.
Server was fantastic and everything was perfect.
Very friendly, attentive service. The truffle fries (YES!), Artichoke bisque (YES!), BIX fried chicken appetizer (OMG YES!), Chicken hash (well, not my favorite but I can see why people like it), Alaskan halibut (perfection), Strawberry shortcake (roasted strawberries and drops of balsamic, awesome) Excellent piano player (lively and not too loud), Suggest using the valet parking too.
My girlfriend and I went for the first time and were so impressed with everything. The roaring 20s vibe, the presentation, even the valet service was fantastic. Will definitely be coming back. I would highly suggest this place for any occasion.
San Francisco cool! Good food and jazz great atmosphere and bar
A classic old line SF restaurant. Tucked in an alley like some of the best SF places of yesteryear. Always a great ambience with trio playing, mood lighting and great murals and paintings. Good drinks, decent food and a great server. Unfortunately, the GM decided to try to push the 4 of us out of the table to “accommodate”other guests as he put it. In a combined 100+ years of dining out worldwide in many of the worlds finest restaurants, none of us has ever been asked to move out so another group could occupy our table. I believe the GM didn’t realize the negative impact that his actions were going to have on us and the wide range of friends we would tell the tale to. He just didn’t read the room when it came to our table and it cost him. Fix that type of blunder and we might go back someday.
Most excellent experience overall. Ambiance, food, music and especially service were fantastic.
Always a good and consistent experience. Best steak taretare. And bone marrow is perfect!
Food quality seems to have really gone downhill. And service was bad- we had to pour our own $100 bottle of wine all night. Our entrees were served without any silverware replacement (our had been removed previously with 2nd course) and we had to ask for it. Would not recommend
