An exceptionally stylish supper club, civilized speakeasy, a sophisticated saloon. Each of these "personae" is housed in a soaring two-story interior distinguished by a gently curving mahogany bar, fluted columns with ornate capitals, stunning original art, plush banquettes, cozy booths, starched linens, glittering glasses, and polished flatware.
Overall, the ambiance is pure 1930's and 1940's - tasteful art moderne reminiscent of the glory days of Cunard and French Line ships. Fashionable and glamorous are the hallmarks. Trendy is simply not a part of the BIX culture.
The clientele at BIX ranges from San Francisco movers-and-shakers to "savvy travelers" - owner Doug Biederbeck's term for the many diners in the know from out of town who patronize his establishment.
All of them step from the featureless alley into another world - a world of superb cookery and libations, of sparkling service, of stylish nostalgia, of polished live jazz. That world is BIX.

BIX continues to be my all time favorite SF restaurant. You can always count on it to be consistently wonderful when you have out of town guest. The food is always off the charts. Our waiter and the service was simply outstanding. Favorites are always the potato pillows and deviled truffle eggs. I had the lobster pasta and LOVED it.

Everyone in the staff was incredibly welcoming and friendly, and they knew about our special occasion and greeted us making reference to it, which made us feel very special and acknowledged.
Our server was wonderful and very attentive.

Wonderful seasonal new menu items. Crudo is 5 stars. Scallops and heirloom tomatoes lovely.

Live music—pianist and combo—makes the beautiful dining room even more charming.

We enjoyed the lamb chops and the pasta with crab! The chocolate bread pudding was the best - light in texture and rich chocolate. The corn soup was also very good. Highly recommend for a special night out

Was a good experience. Nice listening to music while we ate. I ordered the steak and my boyfriend ordered the fish. The steak came undercooked and I had to send it back. When they brought it out to me it was then too well done but didn’t want to send it back again. The portions were quite small. Other than that, was a nice choice for dinner.

Very special place. Service was outstanding. Live music was fun. Food was very good. Had the heirloom cucumber salad -was delicious. And the steak. Cooked perfectly.
Will definitely go back.
We had wine. Nice list. But their cocktail list looked amazing. Will have to try one next time.

We went for a birthday. I had flown from the East Coast specifically for this and was footing the bill. I'd lived in San Francisco in the 90s and had been to Bix a number of times back then and had only had good memories. One of our group was a retired partner at KPMG. She told us that she'd only been to Bix once before, 22 years earlier, and that the service had been so bad that she had never chosen to return.

We first ordered oysters and cocktails. The oysters came long before the drinks.

The birthday girl asked the waiter if she could hang on to the cocktail shaker so she could also enjoy the icy remains. The waiter said, "No, we don't have enough of them to leave them at the tables", took the shaker and walked away. How much nicer it would have been for the waiter to have said, "I'm sorry, we don't have enough of them to leave them at the tables, but wait, let me get a glass for you and I'll pour it into that for you instead!"

A gin and tonic came in the wrong glass.

Two dozen oysters came with two 1/8ths of a lemon (I asked for some more lemon).

A Horseradish side did not come with the oysters. Fair enough. Maybe Bix doesn't do Horseradish. But I asked for some. What came out was a processed, bland, horseradish paste. Any restaurant of this caliber should have fresh horseradish.

I ordered a particular bottle of 2017 Pinot Noir. The waiter brought a different bottle of pinot noir. I pointed that out, and the waiter then returned with the correct wine, but a 2018 vintage. I pointed that out. I was told that 2018 was what they had. We drank it and ordered another bottle. This time, the vintage was 2017! Who knew!!?

The wait staff were abrupt, inattentive and sloppy.

Unrelated to the service: the big upstairs walls were essentially bare of decoration. What, no pictures to hang?

I would suggest you model yourselves after Butcher and Singer in Philadelphia. Same idea, outstanding service.

Sadly, I would not now recommend Bix to a friend.

Great seating! Music was perfect! We had to move our reservation a few hours and they were very easy to work with—even making sure we had a table right in front of the live jazz band!

The deviled eggs and fried chicken are excellent choices for an app! The staff are accommodating to make dishes larger for your party size. My kids loved the non-alcoholic specialty drinks, while the cocktails are perfect to kick off the evening! We will be back!

I have long loved Bix, tucked onto a quiet European block of Gold. After years of working around the corner, I frequented the bar for oysters and champagne, celebrations and third dates. I was excited to return for my husband's birthday last night, but was sadly disappointed.

We arrived early, excited to be there, but met with sour faces from both the hostess and maître d', without either wishing happy birthday or even hello before barking for our names. We brought several bottles of wine to find out that corkage is extremely limited to two 750ml bottles, even for a large party of 8. When we pressed to ask about two magnums, we were rudely informed that it would be $200 for corkage alone, which is egregious at best. We agreed to one magnum, later adding a small dessert wine to be opened as well, which still led to $100 in corkage. Perhaps if this is such a hard and fast rule, they can include it more prominently than small gray text at the bottom of the menu.

The waitress was kind, but recommended two dishes that had little to no flavor, leading for a substantial amount of salt and pepper (and even butter) to the crab pasta and Lyonnaise salad to be edible. The live piano was lovely, but much louder than I remember, with us shouting over our food.

Upon closing out, the waitress took my husband aside to ask why he did not tip on the alcohol purchased (again, that we were made to purchase since we couldn't use most of the wines we brought with us), which was pretty surprising to be asked as that is not customary. As former restaurant workers, we are happy to support restaurants and their staff at the usual 20% food grat. When I tried to give her cash to let us leave without further recourse, she continued to badger me about not supporting the restaurant by not tipping on alcohol. We left hurried and uncomfortable, the exact opposite experience we expected from Bix.

We hope to return when the old world charm of Bix is restored.

It had been decades since we had dined at Bix and I had forgotten what a special restaurant it was. The venue itself is gorgeous! Art deco decor - I felt I could have been on a fancy cruise ship. The bar is beautiful and the service there was perfect and our drinks were delicious! Our party of 6 was seated upstairs at a corner banquette table that enabled us to see and speak easily with each other. We all ordered different things and everybody raved about their meals. We have decided to have our annual pre-Christmas dinner there this year, though will also dine there before then as we had such a wonderful evening.

Great food and service. The bone marrow and table side steak tartare were excellent. I usually get steak but opted for the pork chop and glad I did. It was outstanding. Steak was excellent as well. And the chocolate brioche was amazing. And love the live music. Will definitely go back. Oh, and getting there reminds me a bit of Spain, down an alley of sorts. Very nice.

I love Bix! It’s a great classic supper club with a vibrant atmosphere and a wonderful bar. The service was top notch, usual. The food was a bit lacking this trip. The Wagyu NY steak was tough and the chocolate dessert was very chewy like it had been microwaved. All other dishes were excellent.

I love Bix but we did not have great dinners last night. I ordered the pork chop that was so insanely overcooked to the point that it was difficult to cut with the miniature steak knife. There was really no sauce to speak of or anything to make this chop moist enough to eat. The menu listed "charred pickled peaches, cherries and lettuces" but I didn't see any of that on my plate. I did have some wilted lettuce with a lot of prosciutto I wasn't expecting. Luckily the Caesar salad was good.
My friend ordered the Tagliatelle that was so overcooked it looked and tasted like mush. Absolutely tasteless. I didn't taste the salmon our other friend ordered but he said it was "ok" which isn't the kind of response I would expect from a dinner like that. Kind of disappointed that we all had such lackluster meals. Lastly, what is up with the world's smallest martini glasses? It was like a throwback to a sherry glass from the 50's. Our wait person was delightful but I have a long l list of other places to try soon.

Hopefully the kitchen is still coming up to speed and last night’s food isn’t Bix’s new normal. The spaghetti lobster a fan favorite was replaced with a bland overcooked king crab tagliatelle, seared king salmon also overcooked. On the plus side the opportunity to hear live music in a beautiful space was fantastic. Thumbs up to the som who suggested a great bottle of the wine.
