Great service and delious food, nice music, over all everything was great
Good food and service but not at all the classy place it claims to be. We were there Saturday evening for dinner. Host and hostess snobby. Bar full of people dressed sloppy - torn jeans, T-shirts and ballcaps. One guy in boardshorts, sandals, worn out tshirt and ballcap. We had reserved an upstairs table hoping to have pleasant dinner with our friends but music was so loud we had to almost yell just to hear each other. The band includes a full drum set! If you’re there just to drink and listen to jazz, this is for you. We’ll never go back. For an elegant restaurant, go to Spruce
The truffle burger makes you want to buy new shoes. Beware the cheeseballs that saunter up to the bar, though.
Great ambiance great food romantic
as always it was the perfect eveing; the atmosphere amazing; the service and food excellent
I travel regularly and eat out all the time at some of the best restaurants in the world. My dining experience at BIX in San Francisco was one of the best I've ever had. Seriously.
The vibe is great. Live jazz, awesome martini and top level service. The food was for lack of a better word...insane. I had the peach salad to start with the chicken as my entree. The meal looked more like crab cakes than chicken. The texture, temp and flavor were perfect.
I shouldn't have done it but I did...had the peach cheesecake for dessert in a sorry, not sorry situation. I had no space in my body for it but it was sooooo good.
This will be my go-to spot every time I am in San Francisco.
Great experience! So cool that you enter from an alley- just like a speakeasy! Loved the live music. We sat upstairs. Beautiful and food was delicious.
The place is lovely and comfortable, with just-right lighting and table distance. The service was very nice and hospitable. But the food was a disappointment. My husband's hamburger was dry and lacking flavor, and my halibut was overcooked and tasteless. The prices would have been fine if we had received wonderful food, but $36 for a piece of overcooked Alaskan halibut was unacceptable.
Great anniversary dinner! We ordered a bunch of shareable plates at the bar instead of sitting at a table. They even had a hand written Happy Anniversary card for us. Delicious food. The steak tartare and their version of pigs in a blanket were my husband’s favorite! Great space, awesome bartender and great food.
A classic restaurant with heritage, jazz, and consistently great food.
Most romantic place in San Francisco
Amazing service, incredible food and drinks, beautiful music. We have come here many times previosuly for drinks and snacks. This time we came here for our one year wedding anniversary and it was perfect. We will definitely be back again soon. Highly recommend for a special night, or for just a night you are feeling a little fancy and want a nice atmosphere and good food/drinks.
We can see why Bix is back in the Top 100. Great food, great service, heirloom tomatoes and even air conditioning. Met several new servers and the news is no news. We experienced the same expert service as every trip for the last five years.
I have visited many restaurants in the Bay Area, the vast majority of which were very high end. Bix is quite possibly the best restaurant that I've ever dined at in this region. Food, service and ambiance were all PERFECT!
Loved previous visits but my favorite steak taretare was just delivered and not prepared tableside as it used to be. Tasted pre-prepaed and just brought out. No seasonings offered or asked about preparation. Perhaps new chef and wanted quicker turnover. As a customer who dined there 4x or so a year not sure if I'll come back.
Had a lovely evening & meal at BIX, until the end. Our waiter gave us the check before we finished dessert. Then, came by a second time & pushed the check towards us, as to say “you ladies need to pay & leave”, and THEN, 2 additional people approached our table to ask how dinner was, in a very direct & aggressive way to make us leave. This all happened in a matter of 10-15 minutes. It really put a damper on the entire evening. Because of this experience, I won’t be returning to BIX.
Sort of recommend
The good- ambience
The bad- extremely noisy. Hard to have a conversation
The So-So - Food is good but doesn’ Wow given the price
Steak tartare was great. Fried oyster appetizer nothing special
Duck entree- have had better - could have used more sauce
I wouldn’t call this a chronicle top 100 restaurant
Boulevard which didn’t make the list is better IMO
When all is said and done when I pay BIX level of pricing
I expect more
Lovely evening. Service was outstanding. This is a SF institution and I would recommend. Very dark and very loud. Lovely piano bar. Food was great although the salmon was a bit off-putting as it was heavy smoke- infused.
Great birthday or anniversary
Ambiance is great, service wonderful. The food was okay, I had the Halibut and my husband at the lamb. His entree was way better than mine. I wouldn’t recommend the halibut. Would definitely recommend this place.
For my wife’s birthday we were in San Francisco and chose to have dinner at Bix.
Glad we did - everything was perfect and the service and food exceptional.
Will return for sure!
We visited Bix on a trip from the UK. We have visited on previous trips many years prior to this. We noticed a considerable change to Bix. Previously we felt Bix was a venue for a special night out, to get dressed up and go for a treat. This has certainly changed with the dress code certainly having been considerably relaxed (shorts and flip flops are obviously now allowed) and the food being nice but certainly no longer had the wow factor.
Whilst we have no complaint as such we were disappointed by our experience.
Did not disappoint. Great ambiance, great service, great food. A true SF classic.
Loved our waiter loved our meal did not care for the bartenders they were very rude and abrupt. I don't like starting out the evening like that.
Fantastic Tito’s martini at the bar before being seated. Our table was upstairs for a great view of the bar and restaurant. Oysters, salad, salmon and steak were absolutely perfect. Service was a +10! This night, for many reasons, will be remembered always! Thank you!
This is the 4th time I’ve been to Bix, but will likely not return.
I was meeting a customer from the UK. She was running late.
1. They first told me that I couldn’t be seated until she came, but relented because I was on crutches.
2. Once seated, they told me that I would have to be done in an hour and 20 min so that they could turn the table.
3. My customer wanted the Caesar salad with some chicken on it. They couldn’t add the chicken.
4. Near the end of our meal, the server reminded us that we needed to hurry
I won’t be in a hurry to go back!
This is a very pretty place with tablecloths elegant surroundings and great service. The only sad part was the food seems to be a bit uneven. Maybe we were there on an off night, as it was recommended to us highly. While the chicken hash was outstanding, the duck was bland and unidentifiable (really miss real duck with bones and skin - that tasted like duck even if the sauce was flat). With the cost of the entrees over $30, this should not happen. The drinks were over-iced as well. Because the cost was not justified by the food and drink, I wouldn't consider it a good value. It was a bit disappointing.
The magic of Bix endures. The food is excellent, but the biggest stars here are the ambience and service. Both feel straight out of the 1940's, with a glowing Art Deco (I think) interior and highly attentive, non-fussy, unobtrusive but ever-present service. This is an icon of SF and as fun now as it was many years ago.
Swanky and classically perfect. BIX can it be outdone at its game. From the Perfect Manhattan, the Steak Tartare prepared table side, to the incredible Salmon and Lamb, BIX knows what it is and has crushed it (in a great way) for as long as I’ve known what’s good in this world.
If you don’t like it, it’s your fault and you should re-evaluate every aspect of your life and choices made.
Everything about bix is exactly what you’d expect it to be. Take yourself back to circa 1965 With white coat servers, dim lighting, a piano player, and the perfect manhattan. Bix exudes old school dining and they do not disappoint. Expect oysters, caviar, marrow...all with a lovely pairing? Done. Food and service is fantastic and well beyond worth the trip.
More than a special event/dinner location and of the last GEMS of San Francisco.
Great spot with legendary history. The decor upstairs makes the place.
Birthday dinner with friends from out of town. I really wanted to give them a quintessentially SF experience and our dinner at Bix was exactly that. From the moment we arrived everything was perfectly unexpected and surprising - getting dropped off on Gold street, the energy when we entered the restaurant, the live jazz band, impeccable service and delectable fare. My friends were blown away...it was a grand slam.
solid date night
good food and listening to the jazz was a super plus
Impeccable food in a lovely setting. Really enjoyed the jazz band -- they were quite good. My cocktail was delicious, too.
Our server , Shannon was awesome. However the hostess was rude and while the restaurant was busy, she was not the least bit interested in at least trying to accommodate our preferred seating request. Our party of 5 was celebrating two different events and little attention nor care aaa given to the fact that we “choose” Bix As our venue for these celebrations.
Celebrating our anniversary at Bix was enormously fun! We walked down Gold Street, narrow and lined with old brick buildings. Coming through the doorway, we were greeted by a gorgeous bar and dining room. The staff was friendly and attentive. Multiple staff wished us well for our anniversary. We enjoyed several smart cocktails, fresh oysters and the potato pillows with caviar as our appetizers. For the main course, I had the lamb- tender, no bones, with perfectly cooked vegetables. My husband had the steak and was well pleased with it! Dessert and coffee finished the meal. Throughout the meal, the staff was attentive - replacing cutlery for the next course, filling water, clearing after asking us, and making sure we were enjoying ourselves and the meal. Thank you Bix for a memorable evening!
Solid as always. Chicken hash still the best.
