Free parking was really $5 after validation. Very tucked away and a challenge to find after parking in the garage.
The filet of beef was awesome...very tasty and very tender...good size too. That peanut butter desert was the best dessert I've had in years. The waiters were helpful, but not annoying. The restaurant is new and a bit off of the beaten path, but well worth hunting down. The fixed price, three course menu was not cheap, but within reason. I will definitely return.
Good food and service in a convenient Alexandria location. I do believe the layout of the restaurant itself could use a redesign to improve ambience.
I ordered the crab cakes and petite salad. Salad was mearly garnish on the plate placed around crab cakes. The crab cakes had mostly lump meat and not too much filler (basically some breadcrumbs) but rather bland. I don't understand why restaurants don't wash lettuce and serve it dry. A little moisture would help dressing adhere although in this case there was no dressing (unless you were supposed to use the sauce on the side but a bit of olive oil would have been better). The service staff were attentive.
Love the place. Crepes were tasty but not at a proper temperature to fully enjoy. Too
Much dressing on petite salad Dinner before was better than lunch this time. Will try again
The food is good and the service is fine, but nothing remarkable about this restaurant. It is a bit difficult to find the entrance as it is in the middle of a courtyard.
I’m confused about all the good reviews. Second time I’ve been and service was horrible!
Where to start. There was no one at the host stand to greet me. A waiter noticed, came over and immediately asked “table for one?”. Me “nope, I have a reservation for 3”. Got seated. Got a drink. Waited for the rest of the party. They arrived. Had a runner ask us if we need any other drinks. 15 mins passed by and no one returned. We left money for our two drinks and went to Whiskey and Oyster with great service and food.
Excellent service, food, and reasonably priced. Well worth the trip. Bon Appetit..
We had a beautiful evening and so ate outside on a Saturday night at this wonderful restaurant. They have a pleasant outside setting with lots of tables, with no noise. We also had a terrific waiter whose timing was impeccable. We ordered salmon and the steak frites. Beautiful presentation of our meals and everything was fresh and perfectly cooked. The wine choice is superior and prices lower than other restaurants. Not an inexpensive dinner but you get what you pay for. I would recommend to a friend and already have.
A hidden gem. Sat outside. Great ambience. Good wine and food
I don't even know where to begin. I guess I would start with the fact that we were here for our third wedding anniversary and to their credit, we were greeted with a 'Happy Anniversary' and a complementary glass of champagne.
That's where the good news of the evening ends.
It was not busy in the restaurant, yet our server took forever to get to us to take our order. He didn't get my order right and our drinks were never refilled and he never came by to check on us until the end when we were ready to go. As far as the food goes, it was...okay. The Ribeye was overtly salty. There's less salt in the ocean and the rosemary fries are partly responsible too. But what really hurt the most was that we were mostly ignored for the evening. We would have stayed for dessert, left a bigger tip, but it didn't take us long to know that we were done. I would not recommend this place for a special occasion. I personally will be looking at other places before I consider coming back here.
Justin, we checked with the server and he said you guys were acting as if you wanted to have a romantic evening and he had the impression that you were annoyed each time he came by. -Troy
This is a really good restaurant. My wife and I had an anniversary dinner here, sitting outside on the patio is excellent. The food is excellent, the service is great, and the decor is Beautiful. The only downside is that the restaurant is not located on a main pedestrian area, so it doesn’t get a lot of foot traffic. Hopefully with some marketing, the place will get more patrons. Excellent location for a great dinner!
This restaurant had a very "lonely" feel. The space is huge, not what one expects in a bistro. We were there on a Saturday night and it wasn't very crowded. Service was okay, although there was a mix-up with our order which resulted in a delay. Subsequently, the staff tried to make things right by bringing us bread and by insisting we have dessert on the restaurant. Food was okay; nothing extraordinary. And certainly not bistro fare. The others in our party liked their food better than I did. There are other better French restaurants in Alexandria.
Excellent!! Food, service, and experience — all top notch!! It is like having dinner in Paris without having to fly there!
Food was excellent service was very good. Unfortunately there are not many folks in the restaurant.
I love Bistro Sancerre. As I've said to friends, never before have I wanted to order everything on the menu. And everything I've ordered has been superb. The only drawback to this visit was that there were not enough servers for the number of people eating outside. Thus, service was slow. But the server was aware and apologetic. Excellent food helped mitigate this deficiency.
Though this restaurant is fairly new they have mastered the customer service, ambiance, and food preparation! We wanted a new dining experience in this area for our Birthday celebrations and it was phenomenal.....we will be back! Thanks William.
Food was excellent. Service was nice but erratic, could use a little polish. The restaurant interior is nice but the lighting level is too bright for a restaurant at the level this one aspires to.
Unfortunately the LED lights that they required us to put in, which are great for power purposes, don't dim. We put some grates over them to reduce the light level and I am going to hang some grape vines over them as well which will cut down their light.
went for an anniversary dinner. It was lovely and the waiter could not have been nicer. definitely a return location!
This was our first time at the Bistro. We had the escargot to start. They lack sufficient butter and garlic and had to ask them to provide more. We both had Caesar salad with anchovies. Both were served without the anchovies and we again had to ask for them. My wife had the rockfish and I had the monk fish as entrees. While properly cooked, both lacked flavor. For a French restaurant they seemed to be light on seasoning on everything. They had a nice wine selection, but the prices in our opinion were slightly higher than in other French restaurants we have tried. We won’t go back in the near future, but may try again down the road to see if they have gotten their act together.
Really wanted to like this place. However since our first visit quality of the food and service have gone down hill. We asked for bread and waited over 20 minutes for it. They were out of my first entree choice at 7:00 on Friday night.
I have dined at the bistro several times for dinner and will enthusiastically return in future and recommend the bistro to others.
2nd time there. This time outside. Short on staff. Waiter had multiple tables and could not keep up.
Nothing to make me want to rush back other than it was a beautiful evening and patio very nice.
Went for restaurant week in Alexandria. Food was very good but the service was slow...painfully slow. It was disappointing because this could have become a mainstay for us.
The wine selection process was fun and I wanted to love this place. But...The kitchen forgot to fire a couple of our party’s appetizers and our waiter, who was pleasant and present when we first sat down, sort of disappeared so we had no idea what the issue was until we went to the bar to ask to see a manager. Bummer.
Really good food and great service. Highly recommend.
Great food and great ambiance. Menu piqued my curiosity to return again.
The steak was too salty but the appetizers (Scallop Risotto, White Wine mussels) were more delicious than the main dish.
This was our first visit and I will not plan to go back. Food was only OK, but the restaurant is rather sterile, lacks atmosphere.
I am surprised that you thought the restaurant was sterile. We get many compliments that it is the most beautiful restaurant that they have ever dined in with the black and straw gold color motif, stone columns and fireplace, wood floors, and art from the most famous romantic and figurative artist in the world, I quite agree. The ceilings are high for a more open feel, but above the blackout line it is covered with acoustic panels to prevent any echoing.
What a great addition to Alexandria! will definitely be back for dinner next time so I can enjoy your incredible wine selection as well!
A great find in Old Town. One of the more unique French Restaurants I have been to with an assortment of delicious food and wines. I would definitely recommend this place and plan to go back to try a few more of the items on the menu. The Steak, Fois Gras, French Onion Soup, and the Lamb were all incredible and reasonably priced for the quality of the food. I plan to go back to try the rest of the food, but this place is definitely on my go to restaurant in Alexandria.
Chef needs to improve
The restaurant is large and well-appointed on the inside including an art gallery area for both paintings and sculptures. It was a nice treat to view this area with a glass of wine of which there is a huge selection. The outside seating area is also large and is part of bigger quad area with trees and a center water fountain. Given the nice weather during the visit, this setup makes for a quiet and serene dinning experience. There is nothing else really like it in the Old Town area. There is no traffic noise or exhaust fumes as with the eateries along King Street.
The food quantity, quality and preparation were outstanding with the main course being the New York Strip steak. Even though steaks can be ordered plain, several sauces are offered. The Cognac Peppercorn sauce is highly recommended and paired well with the red wine. The Brussels Sprout side dish was uniquely prepared allowing the seared balsamic flavor to be evenly distributed. The dessert were the Profiteroles with a flakey pastry and vanilla bean ice cream very reminiscent of the type offered in France. The accompanied warm sauce was made with a large amount of dark chocolate providing an intense flavor when poured over the cream filled pastry. Bistro Sancerre is unique in the Old Town area and will be visited again.
This was a nice, quiet place to have dinner. The wine selection is impressive, the atmosphere is romantic and artsy, and the ribeye, I swear, is the best I've ever had. Overall, I had a really great dinner with good service and better food.
Fabulous Happy Hour!!
This was our second visit. In the five months between visits it seems they made their menu focus more on being a "steak house" than a French bistro. This didn't feel like the gourmet experience we had on our first visit. Instead it was fine, but nothing unique to write home about.
Thanks for your review. You are right we do have quite an array of Steaks. But I would think the below list of a few of our menu items makes me confused about not being a French Bistro. Cheese & Charcuterie Foie Gras Escargot French Onion Soup Tomato Goat cheese tart Salad Lyonnasie Warm Brie Salad Rack of Lamb Duck Breast Herb Roasted Chicken As well as our many steaks and other items. Perhaps there is a restaurant around with more French Dishes, but I have not been able to find it.
Casual date night. Loved the wine, food and jazz music. It was a very enjoyable evening
Glad you had a good time. We are running a special right now for $2 off happy hour food items.
Interesting sprawling space, food was flavorful and good, diverse wine selection. Service needs to be more customer friendly rather than seeming to be an 'effort' to ask for addtl items or questions but realize it is still 7 months new. Will try again during the fall-winter menu. Validated parking is helpful!
There were five us for a business dinner and everyone was extremely pleased. They have a great menu that is sure to please everyone - a nice variety. The wine selection is great! Our server was very knowledgeable about food and wine and was very efficient and friendly. Highly recommend.
Hi Audrey, Glad you enjoyed your dinner. We are running a special right now for $2 off happy hour food items. -Troy
Food was quite good. Service not so much. Was very slow, un knowledgeable, and inattentive.
