We really enjoyed this restaurant with the outdoor seating and the food was fantastic. The menu is diverse and we loved sharing several of the entree options. Our teenage daughters wanted to go back for a second time before we returned to Madison.

Every time we come to Bistro Sakana is a wonderful experience!
This time I came with some friends from Japan.
The food is awesome, especially the fresh fish from Japan beautifully presented by Chef Yama.
The service was on point and everyone was very friendly.

We had such a great time! Everyone loved it!

By far the best Japanese restaurant in downtown Vancouver! Great price and high quality food. Highly recommend it!

We have been loyal customers for long time and this time we got ding for $13.5 before tax and tips for a plain udon we ordered for dinner. The pricing is wrong and the quality is not good.

There was one time previously that we were charged for extra $10. Instead of charging $4 for a piece of tuna they charge us for $14, "by mistake".

So we suggest that you please get them to repeat your order again with the price stated.

Please beware and always ask about the price when u order something that is not shown the dinner menu and please carefully check the bill and each item before you pay.

Don't bother making a reservation, as they are unable to manage between walk ins and reservations. Waited over half an hour past my reservation time and others had the same issue. Only one waiter spoke fluent English and poor woman had ever server asking her what to do for every thing. The food was good, not great. Disappointed in their Aburi as it was unfavourful. I was so excited to try this place as the menu sounded great.

First the bad.... it's the rolls. What prevents me for giving 5 stars was that we ordered a few rolls on the side which I would not recommend. They aren't bad but they aren't on par with the rest of the food that this restaurant is serving.

Restaurant has friendly staff. I was nicely greeted and shown to my table. Had Sushi Omakase at the table which includes appetizer and with several nigiri served to you pieces at a time and a dessert. The nigiri is the best that you can have in Vancouver. The amount of Sake on the menu and incredible. Death stares all around for asking if cold sake can be served hot.

Ambiance is comfortable with air conditioning with good service to match. Keep it up!

Some of the best sushi you can find. Hidden gem in yaletown.

Definitely beats all the big name Japanese restaurants such as Masoyoshi in terms of creativity, presentation, taste, and value.

I have noticed that the best value of the restaurant is the Japanese fishes featured on the Today Special Menu. By contrast it is a better bargain than Rolls, or normal sockeye salmon and albacore.

In reality though the rolls aren't very well made. The new roll sushi chef is somewhat of a degrade from the previous.

When we got the restaurant, we didn't see anybody at the front door so we hesitated to go inside for a minuet. The restaurant was almost full when we got there. Many tables were reserved. I thought Tuesday night wouldn't busy. It took time a server came to take our drink orders. Their menu is not easy to read, too crowded, I felt. Food was good.

Authentic high end dining at its best. Best time to come is past 6:30 when happy hour is over with the best Sake menu. The restaurant tranforms from low end to high end instantly.

We had a business dinner after a long day and want to enjoy ourselves. The Happy hour crowd is always noisy with a lot of the younger crowd. We don’t feel comfortable spending $$$$$ in that atomosohere.

We managed to reserve a table for 9:15pm on a Friday night. Sadly, as enthusiastic as our server was, everything started off ok until towards the middle of our evening when our food stopped coming. We have asked our server to double check and never heard or seen him for the rest of the evening. Comes to find, he had to do inventory with the owner and left us unattended.

Sadly, the food was not impressive at all, portions were quite small and the wait for the rest of our order (apparently the kitchen forgot to make the rest of our orders).

Maybe they had a bad night but then they only had 7 tables when we were there including ours. This was a definite hit and miss for me.

his enthusiasm did not compensate for the overrated food.

Excellent tasting food, small portions. Our bill was $120 for 3 people, no drinks so, a bit pricy and we were still a bit hungry. The whole restaurant is way too loud to carry on a normal conversation, if you want to talk, don't go here.

The food was good. However the tables were very close to each other, which was a bit awkward because you can hear every single conversation from the table next to yours even if you don’t want to.

There were a couple of large, noisy groups on the deck for Friday, so not as quiet as on weekday evenings. Still, great food and impressive value for sushi in a highly competitive city? Citrus Himachi, shredded filo prawns and scallop, and salmon aburi are always amazing. But the black cod aburi was outstanding.

I spend a lot of money at this restaurant but never really seem to be welcomed to sit in the sushi bar. He kinda frowned when I asked about the bar and he waved his hand. The rolls are a disaster and simply does not taste the same comparable to down the street. Service is good but the hospitality of the hostess doesn't seem sincere.

I think they forgot to make our food.

We waited 45 minutes to get raw tuna, calamari, and a coke.

Other than waiting forever, the food was really good.

It's Yaletown so it's pretty loud as it gets darker outside.

They also have an odd bathroom location that can only accommodate a person per gender.

Service seemed inexperienced, multiple servers asked us if we were ready to order drinks, then food.
When the food came out, the plates were massive for the small table we had, service didn't make much of an effort to organize the table. We had to put all the salmon aburi sushi on our plates right away to make room.
When asked to slow down the dishes from the kitchen, another came out.
Tea was never checked on or refilled.
Plates were not cleared after we had finished eating for at least 20 minutes. During these 20 minutes no one checked in on us even though the dinner rush was over. No dessert offered. We had to flag staff down for the bill. Overall, was not impressed even though we have been before and live in the area. Will not be returning.

Pros

New renovated
Excellent Service
Excellent Food
Super Good prices
Comfortable setting

Cons

Nigiri falls apart. This doesn’t happen. Lived in Japan 20+ years. Clearly the skill doesn’t match the fish quality.

Everything seems to be always sold out

Same Sake recommendations everytime which is a bore when they have so much variety.

One of my favourite restaurants. Love the new menus and the selection of food but it can be hard to choose. Most of the food here can be compared to Japan quality. The nigiri I must mention can be off. The balance is just bad. At times the sushi rice feels like table rice that falls apart. Sashimi and the rolls are awesome. Really love the crunchy filo. Service for the most part is good. It really depends on whom is serving.
