About Bistro Campagne
Bistro Campagne is a warm and friendly neighborhood restaurant in the tradition of a true French bistro. From the beginning, Bistro Campagne has strived to capture and express that ephemeral quality found in favorite small neighborhood bistros in Paris and rural France: the sense of welcome, ease, fun conversation & and of course excellent food. The setting is a charming blend of prairie-inspired decor and lively Gallic spirit. It is the food, however, that is at the heart of a great bistro, and Chef Michael Altenberg offers a seasonally changing menu of classic bistro fare that is based on the best ingredients he can find. His commitment to organic agriculture leads him to seek products from local organic farmers throughout our Midwestern growing season, and even from organic farms on the west coast throughout the winter. Bistro Campagne is committed to the use of organic food products and strongly supports the sustainable, low impact agriculture movement.

Bistro Campagne Ratings and Reviews
The food was good but not exceptional but the service was top notch. The Salad Lyonnaise
was quite good but the pork chop and the steak frites could have been better. The steak was smothered with Bordelaise sauce which overpowered the meat. This aside, the maitre'd was very accommodating even though we were an hour late for our reservation. I will give Bistro Campagne another shot on my next visit.
Bistro Campagne is now officially my favorite spot when I visit family in Chicago. It is intimate with an authentic neighborhood feeling. But, huzzah, the food - and drink - are also fabulous! House chicken is a classic. And my fish special for the night - their sophisticated take on "fish and chips" - was outstanding. Wine and cheese course also excellent.
We had a wonderful Anniversary dinner at Bistro Campagne. We enjoyed the charcuterie and seasonal condiments and the Betterave appetizers.
All four of us ordered the trout which was so delicious. Our server was very personable and made sure we were well taken care of. I would highly recommend Bistro Campagne.
A wonderful spot on a cold weekend night. Friendly, efficient service. Food was excellent, starting with the warm mini-baguette and delicious butter, to the trout (prepared perfectly, with crispy skin) with smoked trout risotto to the scallops with pork bellies, to the chocolate desert, everything was well prepared and served with the right pacing. Thoroughly enjoyable evening.
We had been meaning to come here for a while and I'm glad we made the trip because it was definitely worth it! We didn't love the escargot but the butternut squash soup was amazing as were both our entrees, the pork chop and amish chicken. Would highly recommend both! They were both huge portions so we didn't need the side of green beans but those were great too as was the creme brulee and French Pinot Noir we had throughout the meal!
Very disappointing compared to other French bistros in the Chicago area. Returned the salad. Plain greens and over priced. The salad Salad lyonnaise. Cold poached egg. Over cooked lardons also disappointing
No moderately priced wine on menu. Lowest cost $46
Mussels were Luke warm. The only thing that was French was the recording on the phone to make a reservation
Service and ambiance at Bistro Campagne is always lovely, but the food was not up to par this time. We weren't sure if it was that there are so many other great french bistros, or if it just wasn't as good this time. The sauce for our steaks had no flavor and the salade lyonnaise was oversoaked before I broke the egg yoke. Still, my filet was very tender and the onion straws and frites were outstanding! Their sparkling wines were average at best, but my husband had 2 great beers! We have never tried brunch, but would do that next time.
The restaurant is charming. The food was ok. The staff need to be trained on their dishes. We ordered the special which was a duck breast. We specifically asked the waiter if the breast was sliced, making it a magret. He said it's the whole breast. In a true French restaurant the breast is a whole duck breast with the skin on. A magret of duck is a sliced duck almost like a duck steak. Well upon receiving our meals....we got magret. Very disappointing.
This has been one of my favorite restaurants for a few years so I was truly upset that I had a bad experience on this last visit. The salad was not the same and was just ok. The onion soup was ok but I don't remember it being so sweet. It didn't have that lovely beefy flavor, just sweet onion taste and a bit watered down it seemed. Then our steaks were not that great. We got a filet and then also a hanger steak to compare. The hanger steak was more flavorful but I could barely eat it because it was so tough and chewy! The filet was tender as expected but not as flavorful. And ultimately the bordelaise sauce was not that great and rather a bit bitter. Not at all what I remember from my last few years of visits. Our server really never checked in to see if we were liking our meal and had she I would have told her how unhappy I was. I Think we should have had at least one of the steaks comped because I couldn't even eat the Hanger steak. But the busboy just took it away and I just was ready to leave and really not sure if I will bother to be back. Maybe the cook had an off night? But it was a slow weekday night and the server should have also been more attentive. Really heartbroken. I used to love this place.
We enjoyed celebrating our anniversary at this lovely location which brought us back to Paris in it’s romantic patio seating area! It was a beautiful October night and their patio lights strewn along the landscape were sparkling! The wine & cocktails were superb with the steak tartare & excargots!
My wife and I were in town for a brief trip and found this restaurant from a variety of searches for "French Restaurants" in the Chicago area. The atmosphere was authentic French countryside along with food to match. Our service was wonderful and food fabulous!
We went for Restaurant week to Bistro Campagne and it was just ok. the food was good but the service really sucked. Our waitress kept saying "no" to any and all requests we made....it actually became comical at some point. My friend and I asked if it were possible to swap the potatoes for a vegetable that was included in our main dish, and the waitress barked at us and said the chef isn't going to give us vegetables...we need to pay an upcharge of $3 for the switch! The upcharge wasn't the problem, it was the delivery. I don't believe I will be returning to this restaurant although the drinks were fabulous!
We had a lovely anniversary dinner here last week. Our server greeted us with flutes of champagne (on the house) in recognition of our celebration. At our request, we were moved to a quieter table. The food was great and the service impeccable. I think we have found our new “go to” celebration restaurant.
I got the Croque Madame for my main and bread pudding for dessert. Both were unbelievably amazing. The Croque Madame was perfectly gooey and toasty, while the bread pudding had a wonderful kick of flavor in every bite. Perfect spot for my birthday dinner with a few friends!
Very nice and friendly service. The wine, dinner and dessert was delicious. We had the chicken and pork chop for dinner; creme brulee for dessert. Our wine was a bottle of Morgon Beaujolais.
Aneta was our server and she was phenomenal.
The inside of this place is beautiful. There’s a small bar with seating, and they do have outdoor seating available.
