We absolutely loved Bistro Cacao! I found this location after reviewing several options for restaurants with romantic settings. We could not be happier. The food was amazing!! The ambiance was like you were transported to France for your meal. And the service was EXCELLENT. Yana was our waitress and she was knowledgeable, friendly, and just an absolute pleasure. I highly recommend going. A true gem in DC!
My new brunch spot. Excellent meal and ambiance. One of the top 5 brunches I have had in 7 years in DC.
Great brunch. Delicious memosa, delicious pastry. Great service
Fantastic date spot and special occasion restaurant. My wife and I went to celebrate our anniversary. We were very impressed with the warm, romantic atmosphere, intimate, and comfortable tables, soft lighting and music, fantastic food and drinks, and effortless service. We recommend it for all looking for a romantic setting to celebrate any occasion.
What a pleasant surprise! This is an outstanding restaurant. The cuisine, selection, and service were impeccable. It’s tucked away in a group of unassuming brownstones. Don’t let that fool you. Once you enter you would never know you were in a converted brownstone. The decor is a bit dark but cozy with plenty of atmosphere. It has ample outdoor seating as well when the weather cooperates. But, the real story is the food... it’s excellent!
We had dinner here on our last night in town and it was by far the best meal we had. The setting is intimate and service was very attentive. We had the lamb and mixed seafood entrees which were both perfectly cooked. For the quality the price is more than reasonable. If we were back in town we would definitely go again.
Awesome, as usual! Great experience and meal every time!
My girlfriends and I loved it! We had a cozy table in a bow window. Our waitress was excellent and funny.. Everyone loved her meal a dessert and said they would return.
The food offerings and taste is amazingly appetizing and the service was top notch. My first visit won't be my last.
Great service and unique atmosphere! Highly recommended!
I had only been here for lunch during the week and sat outside. So I was greatly surprised after waking up the steep iron stairs of the old town house to realize that this is actually 3 townhouses that have been converted to the French bistro. You start with the bar and walk back through increasingly romantic rooms to the back where the booths are hung with heavy red curtains. The curtains set off each individual table for 2 in the last room, creating a lovely ambiance.
We shared our appetizers. The first was a set of 2 scallops, listed on the menu as Coquille Saint Jacques (which would normally come in the shell with cheese on top)but which for the season is instead served open with a mild garlic flavoring. The other was a very refreshing Roquette (Arugula) salad. The rack of lamb (2 chops) was excellent and cooked just as I like it. The special cod was not terribly unusual, and surprisingly more expensive than the lamb. Dessert was Moelleux au Chocolat, essentially a molten chocolate cake with ice cream, and quite good.
The wine list is extensive, expensive and mostly French. But we had a great half bottle of Chateau les Grands Marechaux for $30--only about 4 times the price on the open market. Oh well.
A lovely place with great food for special occasions.
Great food. Perfect place for a date
Lovely dining experience. Very intimate. Can be a bit noisy if you have a loud talker seated near you. Otherwise great ambiance. Food was delicious.
Great food and romantic ambiance.
This place is OK—but just OK. It aspires to be high French cuisine, albeit with a slightly country slant, but Is off target in a number of ways. The dishes are sometimes traditional with a so-so result, and sometimes edgy with not so great results. It is a hard to describe the place, because if it were lower priced and less pretentious, it might come off as a very good restaurant. But it simply hasn’t put all the working pieces together well. You can do much better in DC, dollar for dollar.
Very tasty. Lovely service. Excellent wine list. We will certainly return often.
The food and atmosphere were great. We love it everytime we go to Bistro Cacao.
Amazing place for a romantic date. Highly recommend.
Lovely lunch in the garden with a friend. Server was very attentive and food was very good!
Close to the train which was a bonus
This special place never disappoints— I love it! I had the best scallops I have ever had. And the service was terrific! The hostess even ensured my friend and I had a special table in the window to celebrate her birthday. So gracious! Bistro Cacao is my new favorite place on capitol hill!!
As always the food and service were phenomenal!
Absolutely fabulous! Celebrating 2 birthdays. Food was perfect, stuffed trout, great onion soup and lovely desserts. We'd been there often, but this was over the top in every respect.
David is amazing!
Overall the dinner was great and the food was delicious.
I’ve been wanting to try this place and took an opportunity to do so during DC restaurant week. I had been looking for a French restaurant in the area that almost compares to the ones I had been to in Paris...This place does not disappoint! It is truly one of the best in DC. I can’t wait to go back to try more selection from the regular menu.
Excellent food and wonderful friendly service . We had a thoroughly enjoyable experience
Favorite new restaurant! Will definitely be back!
Outstanding food and service. The staff was understanding when one of our party was very late for our reservation. They even comped us a drink to soothe frazzled nerves.
They didn't open up this renovated townhome too much, leaving many small alcoves and a twisty floor plan. Makes the tables quite intimate with few neighbors. We had just one other couple next to us. Felt like being in a train car.
Fantastic food and service. Best French food we’ve ever had. Will be back
I love this restaurant because the food is consistently good no matter what time of year. It is nice to be able to talk to others at the table without shouting. Many other restaurants of this caliber are so loud that it is impossible to have a conversation. The service is also excellent. Keep up the good work!
This is an authentic French restaurant, complete with menu items written in French with English explanations. It reminded me of my recent visit to Paris.
My better half and I came to try Bistro Cacao during DC Restaurant Week. We started with the appetizer. I had pheasant pate and he had the tomato soup. Both were good, especially the soup, which had Parmesan cheese mixed in.
The main course: I had roast duck and he had grilled lamb. These were tasty, but the portions were small. The duck came with an interesting potato/cheese dish. It’s hard to describe: it’s not quiche, it’s not mashed. But it all comes together nicely in a melted cheese and potato block.
Finally came dessert. The trio crémé brûlée was magnifique! One was chocolate, which was reminiscent of of chocolate pudding. One was classic caramelized vanilla a and the other was an interesting twist, orange. My better half had the fruit tart, which was good but not great.
The service was top notch. The servers are very friendly and helpful with suggesting good dishes. The ambience is excellent the tables where we were are sectioned off by curtains so that there are only 2 tables per “booth.” This tykes me as a god place to come on an anniversary or Valentine’s Day.
The only thing that kept me from giving 5 stars is the portion size. Don’t come hungry, or be prepared to eat a snack at home if you are still hungry after eating here. Other than that, bon appetit!
We went to Bistro Cacao for restaurant week and were pleased to see the restaurant-week menu offered food that was consistent with the restaurant's regular menu. The food was delicious, the service attentive, and the ambiance special. This was our first visit to Bistro Cacao, but it definitely won't be our last.
Excellent. Above reproach.
Nice ambiance, service and tasty food. Nothing special was given to the person celebrating her birthday, however, which was somewhat surprising.
A pleasant relaxed environment. Good food and pleasant service. A nicety to spend an evening. The wines are nice.
Intimate seating. Wonderful service. I ordered the salmon- it was delicious . Could not have been a nicer place to get together with an old friend .
We had a great brunch at the bistro. We had the bottomless mimosas and the ambiance. The service was great too.
Ambience is great ,the service was great ,But the food is the other story .
Fish was not fresh , Duck was served raw ,None of the vegetables were seasoned, instead of pheasant pate terrine was served, lobster bisque was lacking lobster, lamb chops were not marinated.
Dessert, coffee and vine was good
I love this place, it is so easy to get to from Union Station Metro and always good. Staff is also always very nice and helpful. We are always the last table in the place and no one ever tells us to leave.
