Limited New Year’s Eve dinner. Food and service were very good.
I made this reservation 3 months to the day in advance. In keeping with history, if you have the audacity to reserve a table for a lone, single person, you will be treated as one class below people!
Approximately 2hr prior to my reservation time I received a phone call @ my home & the lady asked me if I wanted a seat @ their bar or a table. I replied: a table, definitely. This was surely a hint @ how the evening would play out.
As usual, I arrived a little early. I noticed preferential tables empty & was a little encouraged. I noticed the tables were appointed with jars containing sprigs of baby's breath, greenery, a rose, & a candle.
The table I was lead to, not one of the empty window tables, had a jar with baby's breath , greenery, no rose, & no candle.
My waiter was friendly and professional. I asked about the charcuterie plate & was told they were offering a limited menu & this was the last day they were open for months. (Yet another clue as to how the evening would play out.)
I ordered a martini & was served the smallest martini I have ever seen. I have been drinking martinis for 40yr.
I ordered a 20oz steak & after waiting an inordinately long period of time was served a portion that appeared to be considerably smaller & cost $78.00!
When I finally received my check , my waiter pointed out that they had assigned their own gratuity and it was $33.38. I wonder how legal that is.
I have visited this establishment once before. In the review I wrote at the time, I mentioned my concern with their dress code both for employees & patrons . . . or lack there of. As was evident this evening, my suggestions were totally ignored.
I guess that New Year's was not a good time to try out the Barge for the first time. It took a long time to get our food and everyone didn't get their food at the same time. Our server was obviously waiting too many tables and had a hard time getting back to us. The one redeeming thing was the food was excellent when we finally got it.
The first 2 entrees we ordered were not available. Wait time for appetizer was longer than expected.
No matter what the noise level, the booths put you too far away from your dining companions. That is the worst thing I can say about the place.

Although this restaurant is hard to find (signage not great), we LOVED the Bistro at the Barge. Quiet, friendly, GREAT FOOD. Attentive service. Quiet. Great views of river. We would definitely return if we lived a little closer. Idaho is a long way to come for a great restaurant but will definitely do it again.
Great evening from the door being held open to it being open when leaving. Everything in between was just as wonderful!
Food was amazing!! And our waitress, Andrea, was very knowledgeable regarding the food selections, very friendly, attentive and energetic. Great experience!

I would not recommend this place. Food took over 1 hour to come out after ordering on a slow night. Food was luke warm at best and was just ok. For the price paid I expect excellent hot food delivered in a reasonable timeframe. This place failed.
The food, as always, was excellent. My daughter, granddaughter, and I were celebrating my 65th birthday. We enjoyed the searde scallop appetizer, the raw oysters appetizer, a ribeye steak, the salad with housemade burrata and seared tuna, lobster mashed potatoes, mushroom spaetzle, and a shared slice of lemon blueberry swirl cheesecake.
Unfortunately, I had to reprimand the three men in the adjacent booth for loud, extremely foul language within earshot of my ten year old granddaughter as one of them passed around a video at full volume on his phone. One of them turned out to be the chef...
Our server, Johnathan (I think), came to our table and apologized but the chef who had been at that table later walked past our table to chat at the bar and didn't even look in my direction.
This time we are outside on the deck with another couple. It was a perfect summer night and being right on the river is a true Charleston experience not to be missed. The food & service (Maddie) were fantastic.
It was my wife’s birthday. She ordered a rib-eye which was monstrous in size! It was more than she could eat, so bits and pieces were deposited on my plate for consumption. I found the meat very tasty and tender, but my personal preference is filet mignon. My filet was grilled to perfection! I asked for rare plus and medium rare minus. Perfect!!
The lobster mashed potatoes we split. This was an appetizer—delicious! Sizable chunks of lobster.
The Caesar salad was a good choice, and the goat ice cream with a few berries was a great finish to a marvelous meal.
We did learn afterwards that the rib-eye steak can be ordered in a smaller portion, with an accompanying price reduction.

All employees I encountered, from bartender down stairs to maiterde & waitress upstairs were very friendly.
Can't say enough good things about the ambience & decor & view. But if they want to step up their game & take the establishment from 3 or 4 stars to a straight up 5 star, they need to adopt & enforce a suitable dress code for staff & patrons. I always do my online research before going to a place for the first time, like tonight. I read that this place has a dress code of "business casual. " Needless to say I was more than a little disappointed to find the majority of patrons wearing tshirts and jeans. The staff (downstairs) were all dressed like it was the 70s & they were in a punk-rock bar.
The dress code should mandate NO tshirts or jeans. The dress code should suggest coat & tie for gentleman patrons. The dress code for employees should mandate no tshirts, jeans, sneakers, or flip flops.
Very good food and plush dining.
The meal and service was outstanding. This was the 3rd time that we have eaten at the Barge and each time has been a treat. The Chef is one of the best in the area.
It was hard to find from the road, being not familiar with Charleston.

Food was extremely good as well as the service. I got the steak and my wife got chicken cabanara and both were worth the price. We got the skewers as an appetizer and they were also outstanding. I also got the lobster mashed potatoes which were really good but not quite worth the cost. Also had a great beer selection.

Tremendous experience which exceeded expectations even though my friend’s recommendation was so strong. The chef and waitress (Andrea) were incredible, the view is fun, the wine and whiskey well selected, but nothing beats the delicious and innovative food.
Still good but quality of food seems to have declined.
It was my fiance & I very first time coming to this beautiful establishment. I initially thought the boat was going to be moving on the water but I still had a wonderful time! Our waitress was more than helpful and friendly she made our visit very memorable. Even though the food is a bit pricey it is definitely worth every penny. I have already made plans to come back with family and friends this time. You have to eat it to believe it.
My husband and I both really enjoyed our entrees, him the filet and for me the mushroom/sundried tomato tart. The lobster Rockefeller appetizer was delicious as well. We loved being able to sit outside and watch the activity on the river. Will definitely return. Menu options are expensive, but comparable with other high quality restaurants.

Food and atmosphere and service were all great. But, We went there for a nice relaxing dining experience, treating ourselves, not for a quick meal on the run to somewhere else.
Out of this world lobster mashed potatoes!! The serving was definitely NOT chintzy on amount of lobster. Superb!
The petite filet mignon was prime and tender and grilled medium rare perfectly to my request. The red wine Demi sauce was the best tasting I have experienced anywhere. The salad was artistically presented with a miniature romaine lettuce standing on end accompanied by thinly sliced cucumbers and corrugated thinly sliced carrots.
This chef is superb! What a marvelous culinary experience!
My table was placed next to a window allowing me to view the boats on the Kanawha River.
We had a wonderful evening. The food and service were excellent. The ribeye cap steaks were new to us and we'll definitely be back to repeat the experience!
Food is delicious
The Bistro at the Barge is a must for any who enjoy a comforting atmosphere, large spacious booths, friendly service and most importantly a delicious, well proportioned meal, with a full drink menu for all tastes. I may suggest that if you're in a hurry hit a drive thru, but if you enjoy the company you're dining with and have an appreciation for quality cuisine then this is your spot. Grab a drink, and enjoy the experience.
There is no food in the Charleston/Huntington area that compares. Truly epic and special. All of the meals are truly prepared in house with lots of love. Can’t say enough great about this place!
Great experience. The Chilean sea bass and filet were outstanding. I hope to see this restaurant stay in the area and plan to do my part in supporting its success. Our waitress was fantastic even though she was relatively new. Overall 5 stars!!

One hour to get requested bread, 1 1/2 to get ordered salad, 2 hours after ordering get entree. Incredibly poor service.
Our service was VERY SLOW. Over 2+ hours waiting on our food. Bar order was lost and waiter never checked if we wanted more drinks. When we asked if we could have some "bread" while we waited we were told "we don't serve bread out here in this area". Meanwhile 2 tables adjacent to us received bread. When we asked how much longer for food, we were told, "well its going to come out in something, something". . . When we paid for the bill (over $350) the server left without thanking us OR apologizing for the wait. Very poor service and portions for what we paid. We got Chop house prices with Wendy's service.
Our new favorite restaurant in Charleston. So hard to find fine dining with quality cooking in our area. I had the Surf and Turf, my wife had the Scallops. Meals presentation was beautiful and cooked perfectly. They have an extensive Bourbon/Scotch/Whiskey selection and just as impressive wine list. My only complaint would be they don’t have Lobster as a main entree. We will be back often. Well done!
