   Four of us went to dinner on the weekend that everything was closing down because of the coronavirus. There were 3 other tables and we were all well separated. So it was much more quiet than normal. Food was great as always

   Food was good, but nothing to rave about. I ordered escargot, which I love, and have only seen it made one way: in an escargot pan with butter and garlic. This escargot is sautéed in tomato sauce, and it says nothing about that on the menu (or I wouldn't have ordered it). I also ordered a swordfish and shrimp special: the swordfish was tough and unappealing. The rest of the dish, the shrimp and vegetables, was delicious. Other entrees and eggplant appetizer were good, but just OK. Atmosphere is nice, although layout is strange. Service was the strong suit.

   The food is very good at Bistro 18. However our visit on Saturday, Feb 15th was very harried. Perhaps the restaurant was short a staff member because the service was slow and haphazard. We did not get water until well into our meal and it was not refilled until the end. The server was very curt. The special avocado salad was only 4 small pieces of avocado and a bunch of arugula for $12. The salmon entree was very good. I will return to Bistro 18 but not on a Saturday.

   Birthday dinner with adult children. It seemed as though staff was short. We were given a table in the back and forgotten. It took us an hour to get bread, and it was 90 minutes before soup and salad were delivered. One bowl of soup had less than the other, as though some had spilled. It’s a shame, the food was tasty—but the servings were small. The waiter delivered a dessert to share to make up for the service.

   Not enough waitstaff for the volume of customers. Waited over 30 minutes before anyone came to take or orders. The food was mediocre. I ordered the Tuna Steak rare and it came out gray in the middle.

   Service was incredibly slow - it felt like being in an old class room - smell was weird, sort of musty. Wouldn't go back again.

   It was ok...food was ok, the space was quiet. Oddly they kept trying to seat everyone right next to eachother despite having open tables on valentines day. At one point during the meal our waiter disappeared for a while and came back with his shirt un buttoned and his tie loose. Not sure what the deal with that was. We ended up having to order dessert from the hostess.

    One of the best attributes of this restaurant is that it has a quaint glass enclosed outer seating space. This is great for more intimate conversations without the excessive noise in most other Montclair eateries. Value-wise it's on the expensive side but certainly within the range of most others in Montclair. I've been here a number of times and choose to return.
