Birroteca - Baltimore Ratings and Reviews
I want to like this place. It has a nice ambiance and friendly staff, but except for the pizza, which is fine, most of the other things we've tried have been uneven. The dinner choices were slim this time, so we picked several small plates -- fried eggplant (too salty), calamari (tasted old/off), meatballs (nice), a couple of others. Our guest had a mushroom pizza, which he liked. I guess I want Birroteca to be a restaurant and not just a big bar with bar food.
This was our 3rd visit to Birroteca. The first two times were excellent and memorable. It quickly became one of our favorite restaurants for casual dining. The spicy Italian pizza and the Orecchiette were both outstanding and worth a return trip. On our recent visit, something was off in the kitchen and it took forever for our appetizer to arrive. Our waitress was very attentive, but we ultimately had to ask when our main course (the Orecchiette) would arrive. The manager came over to apologize and offered us complimentary dessert. So far, no harm. When the Orecchiette arrived shortly thereafter, it was clear something had gone wrong. The dish was nothing like our first visit when the pasta was plump and tender and the marinara sauce was very tasty. This time the pasta was flat and the "marinara sauce" was soupy and almost bitter - a huge disappointment. We will go back, but likely will stick with the pizza next time.
Very nice evening out with friends. Great atmosphere. The only draw back is that the waitress/waiter “memorize” your order, which does not impress me because inevitably something gets missed, and it did. One less appetizer for a big group. Just write it down. If you have to go over my order to make sure you remembered everything, it’s time consuming and takes away from my time with my friends.
The service is always impeccable, the food is delicious, we've spent many date-nights here and have never been disappointed. Request a high-table or bar seating for more of an energetic/bar kind of vibe (our preferred seating), request the dining room for a more cozy/low-key environment.
I have been a big fan of this restaurant for years - but regretfully, this week - horrible experience. Kitchen was slow and backed up - took 20 minutes of wait time to get a drink served - incredibly LOUD and difficult to have conversation. Food is awesome - but the experience (when not at the bar) was one I wouldn't repeat on a busy weekend evening.
It was very busy but my daughter and her 10 friends loved the pizza, meatballs, and bread!
It was a great birthday celebration.
In the bar I wish the tables weren't bolted to the wall bc it was very close to the high top next to us and hard to get in and out.
Food and drink were delicious as usual. My favorites: eggplant fries, beet salad, arugula and prosciutto pizza. Service was not so good. No drink refills, had to get up and ask her to bring the check. She stood there waiting for my husband to get out his credit card. Several waitstaff zoomed around us and ignored me trying to wave someone down for a drink, box for leftovers, or check. I will stick to the bar next time!
As always the service is outstanding , the house cocktails are great and the food is delicious. We had the Calamari which I have been thinking about for days after, need that again soon! The pizza is always good, and we had a pasta that we all loved. The dessert was something chocolate and crunchy, very decadent! It is not a quiet place, but the energy is good.
The first time I went here, I was wowed with the pizza and the atmosphere - it was a weeknight. This most recent visit was disappointing, perhaps because it was Friday evening. Our dinner companion arrived first and was seated upstairs; my husband and I arrived a few minutes later and specifically asked if our third party had been seated. We were told no and were seated downstairs. It was only when we texted each other that we discovered the mix-up. Upstairs is not as charming as downstairs, but we were moved there. Our server was very cheerful, but it seemed she had a lot of tables. The mussels were excellent and the best part of our meal. The pizza did not have the crispy crust I remembered. Our friend really liked the wild boar papardelle. It was a pleasant evening, but not as memorable as my first visit.
Booked table 9 days ahead of time for high top ad friend from out of town visiting. Received a call five hours prior to reservation that they could not accommodate. GM blames open table vs over booking and accommodation other people.
I will not go back even though enjoyed resturant in past.
Be careful where you are seated! On Open Table three options are given, Standard, High Top and Outdoor. I selected Standard and booked a week in advance. Was not happy to be put outdoors on a 50 degree night with no coats. When asked to be moved, was told everything was reserved but I could try for a seat at the bar. The Outdoor area has absolutely no charm and had about two or three other diners, and lots of empty tables. Our waitress was not knowledgeable about the menu, and forgot to bring my husband's soup. Very disappointed in a restaurant I had previously enjoyed.
The beer and cocktails were very tasty. We followed that up with the Brussels sprouts which were satisfyingly bitter and crunchy. Next we ordered the duck pizza and mushroom pizza which were both delicious as well as the wild boar pasta and creamy polenta. My two favorite dishes were the polenta and mushroom pizza. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. My only criticisms are that the pasta portions are on the small side for sharing and that the dining room gets very loud. Other than that I thought the experience was very pleasant and I would recommend this restaurant to others.
Have been here many times . we were a group of 5 so split 3 appetizers -The Brussel sprouts (outstanding), the muscles (not fully up to par), and the octopus( really wonderful. For mains we had 2 orders of the Family Duck ( finger licking good) I have had the duck several times over the last few years -it is always fantastic , and always served a little different. The salad that came with it was memorable . Interesting wine list and good value.
Our service was spot on. Always there but never in your face.
It was a 5+ for overall.
Birroteca is noisy, in fact -the noise chase me away. WE ate outside in the covered patio- we could actually talk. It is possible that I will limit my visits to those days that I can be seated on the patio, or very late when it is quieter.
My wife and I enjoyed a date where we order 3 appetizers, I had a cocktail and a beer, and we ordered one pizza. Our server Louis was one of the best we've ever had. It was a really fun night.
The food was delicious. I ended up getting really sick a few hours later—not sure if it was the Spicy Italian Pizza (the only thing I ate that my wife didn't eat) or just a 24-hour bug.
Still an amazing evening.
We have been to Birroteca once before, and it was noisy; but this past Saturday was horrible. There was a group of 16 yo celebrating a sweet 16, and the noise level was off the charts. Our waitress had clearly too many tables- we sat for 15 minutes before anyone came over. Our food came out at all different times. We rarely saw the waitress, and had to ask several times for items (like a fork). The service and noise ruined the evening
We went to Birroteca on a Saturday. Our reservations were for 5:30 (which is all we could get last minute). There were four of us and we stayed there for over four hours. We never once felt pressed to leave. Our waitress was perfect. She knew the menu and she was very informative. We had the Calamari alla Plancha and the tomatoes for appetizers. For dinner we had Spicy Italian Pizza and Handmade Pappardelle. Both were perfectly cooked and delicious. I would recommend going here for any occasion!
