The place is very cute but I had to go get tacos after speaking 100 per head per person ($700) for lunch. They only serve a raw bravette steak which bleads all over your plate. My colleague took it to go so she could finish cooking it to medium rare. The hamachi was the smallest slivers of raw fish with a raw egg on it. The poached eggs is $15- and the tastiest thing as it's a poached eggs on harissa with four potato chips. I got the pork belly, basically a thick unsalted slice of bacon with one arugula leaf and crushed peanuts. I have dietary restrictions and put it on my reservation request and there was only raw steak and a slice of bacon, the poached eggs that I could eat. Also, it said there was only one reservation left for lunch on the day we went and the place was empty. An empty restaurant why does it take 15 minutes to get a glass of water. Very disappointed
It was for my brothers birthday an he loved it
BD never disappoints! Food is delicious and creative...look forward to returning soon! David, was our server, was attentive and also provided great wine pairing suggestions.
I've never been to a restaurant quite like Bird Dog. A friend and I went there for lunch. The waiter gave us a menu with three columns and suggested that we choose a couple items from each column and then split the dishes between use. This worked pretty well for the two of us. However, I prefer the more usual fixed small dishes with wine pairing approach where the chef selects the courses and the wine sommelier selects which wine goes best with each course. They are the experts (or should be), not me. The waiter was helpful but he's not a highly trained food and wine expert either. So if you believe that you know more about their food and wine than the chef and the sommelier (which I don't even think Bird Dog has), then this is your restaurant!
One minor hiccup was that the waiter gave me a glass of red wine that was much too cold. He said that the bottle was stored in the refrigerator and offered to give me another glass of wine.
I probably will not be going back to Bird Dog any time soon but for some people this might be a good alternative to other high-end restaurants in this area.
food looks good, but does not taste good. waiters are friendly. much less expensive than the 1-star, only complain is the food. I bet the price includes high real estate in Palo Alto.
The wait service was perfect: patient, knowledgeable, swift but with a great sense of timing, accurate, witty and considerate. We loved the concept of ordering whatever we desired in any sequence that seemed appropriate for us. And, not least, the dishes were all wonderful.
Even though we went on the earlier side of the evening, the staff was more interested in taking care of the guests of a private event. We waited almost a half hour before we were seated to get any service and that in,y came after we waved for attention!
Best restaurant in the South Bay, if not the whole Bay Area.
We dined in the private dining room and had the best meal in recent memory. The meal was exquisite, the cocktails were inventive and delicious, and our server was fantastic. The private space itself was also amazing, including the fireplace and banquet seating. We host business dinners in Palo Alto and San Francisco often, and most rooms feel like an afterthought. We enjoyed it so much I decided to host my wife's birthday dinner here in December.
Our server was amazing, and shared feedback with the kitchen. He knew the menu and made solid wine suggestions. Very impressed
Great setting, great food. Service was good, but servers were too keen at times. Music was good, but could be more atmospheric. It was very kind of the restaurant to treat us a dessert for the birthday occasion! We paid $85/person (including 15% tip) for a starter, a main, a side and a glass of wine - portions are small so all three are needed. Overall, highly recommended for a special night out or a date. So far, Bird Dog and Evvia are the two best restaurants I have tried in the Palo Alto area.
Really great bar, bar tenders, and nicely upbeat atmosphere and staff. Food was great, as well.
Enjoyed our dinner at Bird Dog. The dishes we ordered were unusual, original and very tasty. It is nice to have a restaurant with food that is different from what you typically get elsewhere.
Crazy expensive but great food! Would be appropriate for a nice night out, but was a silly pricey lunch.
The avocado is really something! Very creative combinations, everything tasted awesome.
Too pricey for food. I wouldn't even say Tapas, more like junior Tapas ... it would be one thing if it was Michelin rated, but it just was unsatisfying, as we were expecting better quality food and/or better value for food.
Food and service were excellent. Everything was great, the potatoes and skirt steak were excellent.
I take all my tinder dates here! And they love it. The food is awesome, try the Uni dish and the Chicken. The bartenders also have an awesome array of cocktails.
I love the atmosphere of this place - chic yet relaxed feeling. I definitely want to come back and try other things on their lunch and dinner menu. The Organic Egg was amazing, especially not knowing what to expect with ingredients of mushrooms and potato chips! The Wagyu skirt steak was very flavorful and the rice porridge with the compressed chicken made me think of the times my mom made this for us on a cold winter evening. Don't expect service to be timely as the food is something to experience slowly, so ensure you have enough time to enjoy it all or signal your server if you're in a hurry as they give you the time to enjoy the meal without rushing you. Well done, Chefs! Love that it's a family team running this too!
This is my favorite spot in the Bay Area. Thanks for bringing great cuisine to the area!
Great food and great service!
My boyfriend and I love this place. When we found out about lunch we couldn’t wait to try it!
It’s not as packed as it is at night so it’s perfect for a business lunch. The servers are friendly and fast and the food is fantastic.
We are always in a rush and normally don’t have time for a sit down lunch, but BirdDog is fast and delicious. This will definitely be our new lunch hangout.
Good food And service but way over priced.
This was actually my third time dining here because a friend wanted to come back. The food is good, but I'm always left feeling like the portions are too small and it's overpriced.
We have been going here since they opened, and it remains one of our favorite restaurants from Napa down to the Peninsula (we used to live in San Francisco). I see some complaints about pricing, but the ingredients used here are clearly sourced by a discerning team. My husband loves the wine list, and the cocktails rival the acclaimed lists of the city. Lastly, we've always found the team to be incredibly warm and welcoming. In short, we feel grateful to have this gem in our backyard.
This is one of my new favorite go-to spots. I love bringing my girlfriends here to have a cocktail and a quick bite. Service is always impeccable.
Great spot in downtown Palo Alto. The food is creative and service attentive. I am a foodie and have eaten all around the world and this place rivals the best of them!
The service, food, and setting were all outstanding. That said, we left unsatisfied after paying $300+ for two people. I'd love to recommend it but there are other highend foodie places where you pay a lot for a little and leave much more satisfied.
Creative food, great service, well-chosen wine list. Portions are small and meant to be shared.
The service was a bit lacking, nothing major, but at this price point the forgetfulness shouldn't have been.
Salt? Texture? Flavor profile? Initially I wanted to order everything on the menu, but of course had to select a handful of items. Perhaps I should've leaned on more of the sashimi offerings, but didn't. Everything needed to be salted. The textures of several of the dishes was lacking any variation, just a nicely presented soft mass of food. While I appreciate that the chefs are looking to challenge themselves with new and different flavors, none of the dishes ordered were a home run...
First of. My server was awesome! She was very attentive. But when our sirloin came out my partner wanted the meat medium well. So our server brought a manager to us just to say that they can't do anything about it.. He didn't even accommodate us at all. But instead just to say " no we can't do anything".. He didn't even offer to say how about if we make you a new one or offer something else instead.. I spend $250 dollars. I'm a foodie person who lives in SF. I am huge on customer service and go extra mile. I am more done willing to spend $$$ on amazing service.. I still gave 25% gratuity to my server just because I know it's not her fault.. The manager is just very disappointing and not manager material. My friend recommended this restaurant.. But I came out very disappointed.
So close but not quite there. Lots of staff but not correctly allocated to deliver a slick service. Air conditioning in bar far too high: uncomfortably cold.
Food; almost there but small portions and the plates don't ever seem warm enough.
Cocktails, ok but again, not quite there.
Really want to love this place but it needs someone to really look through the eyes of the customer to get the details right.
I don't often write reviews but hope that it's taken as constructive.
every main course we ordered were cold, pretty disappointed with the price...
It could have been the perfect meal if it wasn't for the big delay between first and second course... Maybe it was just a bad day.
everything was good except the long blond hair we found in the fried chicken. my wife lost her appetite after that, but it didn't bother me that much. The food was all excellent tasting. mgmt was nice enough to comp us for the fried chicken (though like i said my wife lost her appetitte and didn't enjoy the rest of the meal. She tends to be very dramatic about these types of things, maybe b/c she used to be in nutrition and understands how gross it can be. Me? didn't bother me that much).
had a few cocktails and they were all tasty as well. the fried chicken tasted real good, and i think it's b/c they use rice flour in it. it's cooked very much in the same way as a good taiwanese "Pai-gu Fan" dish is prepared (aka: pork chop rice). Same flour and taste. Which is good. The only bad thing was my stomach wasn't feeling that good the next day. I'm not sure why it hit me so hard as i usually have a heavy duty stomach, but this one got me. Fried chicken in general gets me more than other food.
the waiter was excellent. and service was good too.
Visiting from east coast and found this gem. Delicious, creative, simple elegance. Excellent service. Definitely recommend it.
Bird dog was alright food but the portions were so small we all left hungry
Service was fantastic. Everything was delicious except the halibut, which was bland to me, fishy to my wife.
My favorites: skirt steak and little potatoes
Wife’s favorites: broccoli stems and little potatoes
Nice ambience- small portion.
My first time. Creative and high quality lunch. Definitely the alternative to Evia.
