BIRCH & RYE presents a modern interpretation of Russian cuisine. Using premium and niche ingredients, the restaurant reimagines Russian food through a California lens, featuring unique takes on traditional plates that are deconstructed.

Among the light & seasonal dishes at Birch & Rye are several GF and vegan options. The beverage program features infused vodkas & Eastern European wines.

This was our last hurrah for this restaurant. We were disappointed that they were out of the faberge egg starter but the smoked sturgeon and the crispy zrazi were excellent. The chicory salad was quite refreshing. The stroganoff had delicious mushrooms and noodles but the sauce was a little bland. The duck had great flavors but was on the dry side. the rice served with the duck was great. the donuts with caramel sauce are to die for good. And we will certainly miss the horseradish vodka. Our server was nice enough to let us try the vodka with pickle juice as she preferred. It was worthy. I am very sorry to see this place close. It has been a great addition to Noe valley.

We ordered the pre-fixe tasting menu - my wife selected the vegan option, and I had the regular entrees. The food was excellent, and the wine pairings were fun. The server was one of the best we have ever experienced! The price was hefty, but the food was superb.

Food was good. Service was mostly okay until a very long pause between third and fourth course. But overall, it was not worth the high price.

Great restaurant! Can't wait to go back! Took a vegetarian friend for her birthday and had a wonderful meal. we started with the Winter Chicory Salad and an order of the Petite Rye & Smetana Butter--the salad hit all the right notes with it's citrus-y dressing; the home-made rye bread was great (the smetana butter could have had a bit less salt...) Then we had the Crispy Zrazi--this wonderful potato/lentil dish stole the show! The Wild Mushroom Stroganoff was delicious (and so rich, I would suggest sharing...). Two baked rye doughnuts & caramel sauce were brought to the table with a birthday candle for dessert. Service was perfect--we enjoyed the entire experience. I can't wait to go back and try some of the non-vegetarian options--which i will have to have with the crispy zrazi. The brunch menu looks awesome, too.......

I’m not one to write negative reviews but 6 of us went to Birch & Rye for dinner on a Friday night. To start all the doors were open and it was freezing. Then the drinks were pretty terrible and it took forever to get our orders taken. I really feel our sever either trained or just didn’t get timing of a meal. My dish of the squash was dry and felt like it had been sitting for hours and reheated. Several of my friends ordered the duck and again everyone felt it was dry and had been preparing earlier and reheated…I could go on and on and I heard such great things. Maybe we hit it on a bad night but unfortunately we won’t be back 6 people over $800.00… no dessert we could leave fast enough …a shame

Breakfast egg, bacon and duck fat potatoes: under-cooked, greasy, bland potatoes with a small cardboard-looking/tasting, fried egg and fatty bacon was an embarrassment on a plate. Not kidding! The vodka infused salmon was delicious and the size of a very tiny appetizer ($23). Ridiculous!!! The $16 drink was good but not great. The Syrniki dessert was a small serving of deliciousness. The two comped doughnuts were served to us since we were celebrating a Birthday and were much appreciated since it filled us a bit more. I will not be back and do not recommend BandR to others. The atmosphere was lovely and the service was pleasant but a bit hovering. Not deserving of a future Michelin star and not likely to succeed in our current economic climate unless the food improves and the portions, become more generous.. A very disappointing $130 brunch, indeed.

Had the vegan tasting menu. While the food was creative and new, the service was a little lacking... especially for the price. They forgot about us on our fourth and fifth course. They realized the error and comped us a drink and app but for the level of dining experience they're trying to provide the lack of attentiveness was glaringly amiss.

This is the 4th time I've eaten here and I noticed a significant change in the menu and service. It is still good but it wasn't the spectacular experience I've had in the past. I would still recommend Birch and Rye but I would think twice about celebrating a special occassion here.

Reason for 2/5: 1.Scheduled for New Year’s Eve dinner, took 2.5hr for only few dishes. Waiting over30 mins between starter to main pasta. Group on my right came later than me and got their dishes earlier than me. Let me know if you are not welcome single lady for dinner. 2. Dessert is donut. No words but silence. Think before you spend $200 on a dinner over with donuts. I don’t eat it usually, but guests on my side have made comments that they were also surprised by this, says it was dry. Not my words, they said it. 3. Ordered Carvier flight. Not there. Not even a single egg on the table. Where are they? Still in the fish belly and swimming in the ocean? Asked for refund, and you want to give me gift card. No thanks, I don’t want it and get my poor money refund back please. They should not be there in a cold gift card and suffered my stomach next time. 4. Vodka was good. Service was less. I will tell you I did not have that booked flight(the egg one, not the vodka one) for whole night as loog as someone came and asked me if I had a good dinner. Well, I am very nice and sit like a fool for 2.5hrs. (Yes, you may laugh) 5. Please refund what you owe me and asked yourself, what Russian food should looks like. I lived near Russia and wonder know why donuts and pasta was there(yes I know truffle was inside too and tasty) lol, the one looked for a traditional Russian food got tears that night. what a ridiculous dinner. : )

We reserved brunch to celebrate a family member's birthday, hoping it would be as good as it was when we had dinner early last year. This was the worst dining experience we've had in at least 20+ years of dining at all kinds of restaurants, from hole in the wall to Michelin star, around the world. We didn't receive everything we ordered, our server's estimate of a 10 minute wait turned into 30+ minutes for most of our food, our server didn't check in on us such that we had to flag someone else to get water refilled, but these were the more minor issues. What really made this experience the worst is that the "khachapuri" that we ordered (or rather one of them, since our second one never arrived) was minuscule, about one tenth or less of the size that the restaurant used to serve for dinner. Literally two bites. Now, it's listed as a $15 appetizer (the dinner version used to cost $18) so I was expecting it to be a bit smaller, say three quarters of that size, perhaps half that size with inflation, but getting something that is the equivalent of an amuse bouche for $15 is simply insulting, especially when our server knew we were three hungry guests and we'd only ordered one other main dish plus a side of egg and side of bacon. We've had at least 50 if not more khachapuri in Russia and the U.S. and it's *never* amuse bouche size. When we expressed our considerable disappointment, given that we'd made the reservation specifically to order the khachapuri, and referenced the size that the dinner khachapuri used to be, at only slightly higher cost, we were told by the chef/owner that menu items change and it was our fault for not clarifying the size of the khachapuri when we made our reservation. No apology from the owner (only the manager), only defensiveness/justification. The owner should not be in hospitality. Avoid.
    Birch & RyeResponded on December 14, 2023
Hillary, Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry we could not accommodate your request to sell you 6 khachapuri for the price of 2. We hope you enjoyed our pirojok and a khachapuri both of which we send to you compliments of the kitchen.

Our table all ordered the tasting menu. Two of us got the vegan tasting. The vegan menu wasn’t as thoughtfully made as the meat version. The vegan menu was fine but lacked imagination and flavor. The waitress seemed distracted and on several occasions we had to remind her about things. It was not very busy about half full. The decor is nice.

As some who was is the service industry for 6 years during college and after I am always very considerate to the serving staff, but my experience here was awful. The server was very short with us and treated us differently from her other tables- we could hear her offering food descriptions and recommendations to her other tables nearby, which she didn’t do for us. I’m not sure what provoked that kind of service. She also brought our entrees before our borscht - I think she forgot to order it- and never came back for a second drink order. The food was just meh. Save your money and go to Cinderella bakery in the Richmond.

We were so pleased with our brunch! The only dish we weren't completely enamored with with the Faberge Egg dish - the cauliflower foam needed more taste. I also asked for my Mimosa 3 times before I got one, but was comped for the wait.

We had a great meal last year at Birch and Rye so when my mom came into town, I thought this would be a good spot to splurge. We were sat outside which was odd since I booked standard seating and then halfway through our meal, our server kind of forgot about us so we had to flag down people for more wine and water. The food was underwhelming - we had the tasting menus (regular and vegan) and while some dishes were good, it wasn't great for both menus. For a $500 meal, this should have been a better experience so I won't be coming back.

Great service and delicious food. Definitely a bit of a hidden gem in Noe Valley. We really enjoyed the caviar service and brunch menu. Will be back for more soon!

We are 2 Russian girls who were raised in USSR and spend another half or their lives in USA( 23 years). We didn't have expectations when we came to the restaurant. After ordering several dishes we were pleasantly surprised that food was really good. It has Russian food flavors but tastefully adjusted to American client. Food was delicious and every bite was a pleasure. We decided to bring our families next time( kids who grew up here, American husbands and Russian moms/grandmas). We think it will please everyone's taste buds which is rare when it comes to Russian food. The restaurant itself is nice and cozy and located in one of the best and safest areas of SF- Noe Valley.

I review a lot of restaurants. 3 words for this one - authentic, delicious, invigorating. San Francisco restaurants have been a conundrum lately. Of course we all absolutely love the diversity of cuisines in the Bay Area but generally the quality has varied, and every year it's become more challenging to find places that I can truly call authentic. Birch & Rye is one of a kind. It's the perfect combination of fairly priced, easily accessible, and frankly just a fun scene. If you're looking for a great night out, Birch & Rye should be on your Top 3 List. P.S. I'm not fancy but you NEED to try the caviar.

Loved the food, especially the cheese rasstegai and crepe with black caviar. Oh, and order fried potatoes with their adzjika on a side - great combination. The service was wonderful. They have special cocktails and nastoiki. Would visit again when in town.
