Whiskies

Relative newcomers to the whisky making scene, Japanese distillers have recently been creating waves at international competitions with their innovative blends and approachable style. Japan's earliest forays into whisky making were modeled after traditional scotch whisky (hence the dropped ͞e͟). To this day, barley used in production is still grown and malted in Scotland before finding its way to Japanese stills. Despite its roots, whiskies from Japan are quickly becoming their own distinctive style, known the world over. Marked by their predilection for balance in all things, Japanese whiskies are both bold and complex, yet never over-powering or too aggressive.

Japanese

Single Malt

• Yamazaki 12 Year

  A popular, easy drinking whisky. Sweet honey and spiced wood, with a long, slow warmth.

• Miyagikyo

  Light in body, yet full of flavour, elegantly fruity with sherry-cask character.

• Yoichi

  pleasant peaty notes and smokiness originating from the traditional direct coal-fired distillation as well as briny hint delivered by the sea breeze during aging process.

Other

• Nikka, Coffey Grain

  An essential component of Nikka blends, this whisky is distilled mainly from corn in a Coffey still. Exotic, fruity and unique, it is meant for the connoisseur in search of an unconventional whisky.

• Nikka, Coffey Malt

  Unique distillation method. Malted barley is distilled in a ͞Coffey still͟ traditionally. Malt is delightfully fruity and spicy.

Blend

• Hibiki, Harmony

  A blend created to please all whisky lovers. White chocolate and honey flavors with a lingering taste of japanese oak to finish.

• Taketsuru, Pure Malt

  A superb Japanese blended malt. Elegant smokey finish with golden barley and a final hint of coffee.

• Suntory, Toki

  Blended with a number of Suntory's other whiskies, including Hakushu, Yamazaki, Chita distillerys. Very light and gentle offering sweetened cereal notes, green apple, brown sugar, and a touch of spearmint. Finish with touches of ginger and cinnamon.

Sake

Sake is Japan's national beverage, with origins dating back to the third century B.C. The finest sakes are painstakingly produced by sake brewing families that have been in the business for generations, using prized mountain spring water and a few very select rice strains. As with wine, sake can present astonishing variety in the bouquet and on the palate, ranging from crisp, floral, and fruity to more complex notes of earth, cedar, butter, and cheese. The sake you enjoy today might not be what you crave tomorrow, so feel free to experiment and try new varieties!
