Big Grove Tavern
balsamic glazed crimini mushrooms, grilled green onions, thyme risotto, pumpkin seed puree, crispy kale, truffle oil, poached egg
with house smoked salmon lox
sun-dried tomato tapenade, green onion yolk, baguette crisp
Menu has a wide variety of options. Overall food was good. The buffalo chicken sandwich could have been spicier and fries were ok the salty side. Service was good but not great.
Took around 20 minutes for someone to greet us, which was odd because the restaurant wasn’t crowded at all and we had a reservation. Waitress was kind and attentive from that point on. Burger was dry and fries were subpar. Had an Old Fashion, which was good. Wasn’t impressed by food. Places nearby have better burgers, fries, etc. and probably won’t be back.
Birthday for my bother and his wife
I took my family to Big Grove Tavern to watch the Illinois Illini play Indiana. We were very pleased with the burgers that we ordered. The waitress was very accommodating and she came back to the table several times to make sure we were satisfied. We hope to be back the next time we are in town.
Best chilaquiles I have had, full of great flavors and loved the crunch of the taco chips.
Good food but they're trying to be fancy and the miss it but "that" much. Kind of pricey but I highly recommend the "Ehhh No" cocktail. Our server was fantastic.
Food was good except...after eating dinner salad it was 30-40 minutes before our main entree's were served. Then my ribeye steak had good flavor but was tough. My wife had the Salmon which she loved. I would return but will not be ordering a steak, other than that everything else was very good.
Very nice time. Ate there with my son and husband for my birthday. Waiter was excellent...just attentive enough. Food was very good. Disappointed that they were out of my dessert choice, and the atmosphere was a little loud for me, but all in all it was a great experience.
Food and atmosphere were great, per usual, but our table grew frustrated with service when it took our waitress 10+ minutes to come over and ask us what we wanted to drink because she had been casually leaning against the bar in the back chatting.
The food here is amazing--both the selection and the taste! There are some higher-priced items on the menu, but there are also options that were good value. The service was a big lack-luster. It was a busy night, but our server seemed to be in no hurry to get to her customers.
We've also come before and just sat at the bar for appetizers and drinks. Very nice atmosphere.
My only criticism each time I eat there is the noise level. Conversation is difficult.
After reading the reviews, I can tell others that the food was fine, and the service was quick. It’s an okay restaurant choice. But that’s it. I had a reservation, but had to wait on a table. That’s not an awful thing— but the questioning and floundering about it, from 3 staff, was annoying. The place is really loud and it’s not clear why. It’s not a fun bar-vibe loud. The music and voices are loud in the setup of a regular restaurant full of tables. Best item was the pretzel braid; worst was the fries.
Love to go here for brunch with friends
Great experience! One of our best visits!
The food is OK, but not great. Good selection of beers. Prices are a little high, but not outrageous. One can do better in downtown Champaign.
The food and service were outstanding! Will recommend to our friends.
We were disappointed as we spent a great deal of money that night and the food was so, so. Not bad. . . but certainly not what we expected based on previous visits. Brussel sprout appetizer was tasteless; no salt or seasoning of any kind and no bacon added to give some punch. Crab cake appetizer was very good. Steak Frites meal was ordered medium; what we got was a very overdone piece of shoe leather. Husband ordered the prime rib, which was done as ordered (medium rare) but had absolutely no flavor at all. No salt, no seasoning whatsoever; just bland and tasteless. Our waiter was not attentive at all. When our appetizer was brought to us, the server said he would bring small plates. We waited and waited but didn't see him; finally ate it without plates as it was getting cold. He never checked back after bringing us another course to see if we needed anything. All in all, it wasn't horrible but we expected better.
We had a party of 7. Seated at the bar and had drinks before our reserved table was ready. The popcorn appetizer was a nice touch! Meals were pretty good, some smaller and other dishes larger than expected. We tried to order a bottle of champagne to be served for the entire table. The bar staff had a hard time scrounging up enough available champagne flutes.
Overall a good time was had.
Birthday lunch with girlfriend
Food is always delicious! Although they were unexpectedly short staffed today our waiter was fantastic. He really hustled and gave us wonderful service, even though he was running like crazy!
Definitely a new favorite!
We had a wonderful experience at Big Grove Tavern. The menu contains so many different options. We had great service from Sarah. All of our meals were delicious. We had prime rib and the shrimp and scallops pasta so it was a varied selection! It was a nice surprise that glasses of wine were half off on Sunday nights. The popcorn starter was yummy and a nice surprise to start the meal.
Service was excellent. Wait staff was very helpful in selections. Food had a good presentation. Food was good but not wowed by it. Very basic menu.
We enjoyed our meal at BGT. We were seated promptly at out reservation time and our server was outstanding. The menu is a little eclectic, but we all a found something we liked and the food was good.
Out of the good wings ordered 2 of the specials they weren’t very good.
The service was very good. They had a very limited menu for dads weekend and one of the items was not cooked right and sent back. The waiter was great and brought something else right away.
We come here a lot when visiting our sons at Illinois. It's one of our favorites. Great for brunch, lunch or dinner. In the warmer months, the outdoor patio is wonderful. Our server on this past visit was one of the best ever. Very attentive and friendly, and he made great recommendations. The chicken tacos are always a favorite, but they do have a kick. The shrimp and grits is one of my go-to's. They have a nice wine selection, and the ambiance is comfortable and inviting.
VERY slow service. The greeting took several minutes, and then pacing was normal. However, once food case our server all but disappeared. She forgot a guest’s mimosa refill and had to ask several times what type of mimosa she ordered. She was nice enough but VERY aloof and inattentive.
Too bad they stuck us in a back room. There was room up front, and I made the reservation a couple of weeks in advance.
Good option in Champaign for good food at reasonable prices. Our server was a bit sub-par, but she may have been distracted with other customers/issues. Not sure. Would definitely try it again.
The traditional breakfast dishes were okay. Rather bland. The other dishes were excellent. A lot of flavor. There were eight of us seated behind the bar. We were splashed a little with champagne but no big deal. Our waitress was excellent. Overall it was a very good experience. Will definitely go back.
The Bone in Ribeye was fantastic and the price was on point with the quality!
Had every dessert on the menu, except Key Lime dessert only because they were out, sorbet was not my favorite all the rest were very good. The winner was the pecan pie desert... Wow!
Solid "farm to table" pub. Atmosphere is great, staff is always on point and food is excellent.
The food came out cold and wasn’t what the menu advertised as the meal
Best burger ever!! Maple bacon doughnut was amazing! Service was ok, never give me my check in the middle of eating my meal.
So delicious! Great service. Definitely go there again.
My wife and I were celebrating our 1 year anniversary and wanted to try a new place, we didnt want too fancy but didnt want the normal big chain "nice" restaurant. Big Grove seemed like the place, and at first it didnt dissapoint. The popcorn they give you while you wait was delicious (I could have taken a whole tub of it!), the drink specials did not dissapoint, and the appetizer we ordered was great. However, during that time we were constantly looking for our waitress to bring out the said items. We ordered both our meat entrees medium, ended up getting them well done at best, the food was possibly sitting under a heat lamp for some unknown reason. My wife ordered a soup with her entree and finally managed to track someone down to give her a spoon to eat that with after about 5 minutes. Mind you our waitress was nowhere to be seen yet still, other people had served our food items. At this point we ate the dissapointing food because we were both so hungry from the wait times. When we were ready to go, we of course had to wait approx 30 minutes just to get our check. As we were waiting we noticed more and more people were having there cards declined. This was because the system was down, we did not have any communication of this. This was of course out of their control, but the way they handled it was poor. After waiting about 10 minutes for our waitress to collect our handwritten card number on a reciept, we grew tired and just wanted out of that place. So we went to the hostess stand and asked they give the reciept to the manager. Im not one for complaining, but disorganization and mediocre customer service are incredibly embarrassing when an establishment charges around 15 dollars for a dry cheeseburger. Extremely dissapointed and needless to say my wife and I both wont be reccomending Big Grove to any of our friends or business associates.
Lovely evening until the restaurant got full, then the noise was overwhelming!
I love to go here for breakfast and lunch, for which I have had great experiences. However, the dinner service is consistently bad. This last time was extremely slow. We had to flag a host to get our servers attention. One of our drinks were incorrect, one did not receive an appetizer until the entree had arrived. Unfortunately this seems to be average as our last experience was similar.
