The problem is that the restaurant has limited menu before 5pm. And a rule that customers who sit down initially at 4.59pm or earlier cannot order from the full.menu. it does not help if you sit down at 4.59 but the order at 5.01pm. BEWARE we were happy to wait but the rule was strictly enforced. We initially booked for 6pm but moved it to 4.15pm with the idea of having drinks until 5pm but no one informed us that by doing so we would forfeit the right to eat from the full.menu. this is the exact opposite of a customer focused experience and ruined our day in st Ives. This strange and unexpected rule was NOT explained to us until we sat down by which point it was too late
The name of the venue and the location inspires you, however after calling 2 months in advance for a table at 6 for 9 people, we were told to book tables on line. However we could only get a 4pm table. We called again and were told the tables must already be booked we asked if we could still order food at 4pm and we were told yes. We also had to give our credit card number and were told money would be deducted if we didn't turn up. We arrived at the venue at the booked window, and were told food is not served until 5pm but what was crazier we were told we could not order food after 5 if our table booking was before 5pm!! Even though I might add there was only 1 other person in the venue from 5 onwards. We ordered drinks so as not to have our card debited and later went up the road with 5 hungry kids for pizza. I know you should not single out an individual but the woman in charge was abrupt, rude, unhelpful and generally grumpy. The young staff appeared to be frightened of her, as were we. I would not go here, particularly as holiday time with family is so precious.
Great food and very good service from staff and one woman was very knowledgeable on vegan food. Will definitely go again. Very nice unique interior. Good music.
We returned as last year as we had brilliant time and offered lots of gluten free options ..this year they had no gf batter so the kids couldn't have the fish fingers and the gf chicken goujons was just chicken and they couldn't even have the fries no other potatoes options ..they had the sweet potatoe fries in the end but only 1 person liked them . My husband is also gluten free he had to have plain fish ... £120 was expensive for 3 of the meals not what we wanted and a disappointment, waffles was half hour wait so in end so we had to skip as kids was fed up from the main meal ... Service brilliant, beer brilliant and ambiance great ..just let down on food .
When I booked I mentioned 3 X gluten free so advance warning was given .
Great place to eat, but if you like beer, this is the place to visit. The variety of Belgian beers is insane. We had nibbles( salami, cheese, olives and pitta bread with hummus), really tasty, goes so well with the beer. For mains we ordered burger, chicken schnitzel and mussels Thai flavour. Everything was outstanding. Our son wanted to try the waffles, but our tummies were too full. We saw other people eating them and it did look good. The deco in the restaurant is fun and quirky. Highly recommend to visit.
Lovely food and great atmosphere. Staff were superb.
Really lovely restaurant, the staff were brilliant and the food absolutely spot on. Strongly recommend!!
A treat of a place! Make sure to hand in your shoe when you have an extra special beer. The kids loved that. Food fresh & tasty. Popular place! Vast selection on beers. Cider not too bad either! A fun night out.
Food was terrific - moules, schnitzel, waffles all delicious.
A fantastic meal on a rainy summer evening. Great atmosphere and food!
First visit here. The service was friendly but a few things came wrong as it was the waiter's first few days on the job which is understandable and they resolved them. The restaurant is nice inside and has a good atmosphere. The food, for 3 adult meals and two children's, was no more than average but the prices by comparison are high. I don't mind paying £17.50 for a main course but it has to be better than standard bar food and there are many places in the town where you can get much better food for less. We wouldn't eat here again but might go for a drink.
Good decor, great selection of beers, tasty food. Unfortunately the service left something to desire.
Great service, lovely food and cool place!!! Loved every minute!!
Not a huge menu to choose from for an evening meal but still lovely
Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Excellent ambience and a fabulous choice of draft and bottled beers ( as well as spirits, cider, and hot/cold drinks).
Was doubly impressed with their Covid precautions......well spaced tables and no mask, no entry!
Big, succulent mussels. Perfectly cooked in a lovely Belgian beer broth. Excellent selection of Belgian beers. Fast friendly service and reasonably priced. Can't comment on dessert as I was completely stuffed! Highly recommended.
Mussels were lovely. Portions were excellent. Great selection of drinks. Recommend.
Not brilliant, expensive for what it was and food wasn’t good. It’s a very limited menu on the food side but obviously brilliant for beers
Great evening and food. Really enjoyed the restaurant
Excellent food with very attentive staff in hand .
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would highly recommend this place!
Our recent visit to Bier Huis was a really good one. All of the food was of good quality, freshly cooked and cooked well. Portion sizes were generous. The tables are well spaced and of a good size so there is no feeling of being overcrowded or cramped. We are very happy to recommend it as a good place to go for couples, families or groups of any age range. The atmosphere is lively but not too much so. The waiting staff are exceptional. They are happy to help and are attentive but not too much so. We will return as soon as we are back in the area.
Lovely meat balls and brilliant chowder - great staff and service
Really excellent experience as always. The new manager (Jess, I think) introduced herself to us and made sure we had a great evening. She was knowledgeable about food and more importantly the extensive and superb beer menu. We’ve visited for the last three years and will definitely return again 😄🍺🍺
I was a little disappointed with the Fish & Chips, after having such amazing Fish & Chips elsewhere in Cornwall during our hols. Staff were very friendly and waffles were lovely.
Really great beer choices, fabulous mussels and waffles.
Staff were very welcoming, hope to return soon!
Enjoyed our meal very much & also my fruit beer. Would recommend.
We enjoyed our dining experience at Bier Huis, we had a few issues with our order but was quickly rectified by the staff, ordered a large moules in thai sauce but after first presented with moules marinere I then received the correct dish but half the size! so I asked for some bread to make more of the meal, when we received the bill I was charged £4.50 for 3 pieces of regular white bread, a bit steep! We will return as we enjoyed the ambience and the food was very tasty, great choice of beers too.
Unfortunately if you arrive before 5pm the food menu is quite reduced. Went there specially for the moules but as my booking was for 4.30pm I couldn't order it! End up just having a beer and a sandwich (Brie and caramelised onion), which was OK but nothing extraordinary. Unfortunately also due to covid there is very short staff so guess that's why they don't have the kitchen open before 5pm.
A really unique place, authentic, even down to some of the furniture which has been shipped from Belgium, the beer and food were excellent, great atmosphere and exceptional service, we are lucky enough to be booked in again later this week, it definitely won't disappoint!
Very slow to get meal but understand staffing issues.
My mother had the mussels and was violently sick 3hours later and has been very poorly since. She hadn’t eaten anything else that day or the day before that would make her that ill.
Dear MartynP, Im so sorry to read that your mother has been ill. I am happy to report, however, that it wouldnt of been our mussels. Due to the nature of the farming, washing and preparation of mussels; we would not have made just your mother ill, but our whole Bier Huis. As we have not had a recall from our suppliers, or any other reportings of illness- I can reassure you that the mussels were safe. Additonally, the incubation period of food-borne viruses are around 8 hours, not 3. Jess, GM.
The Buddha bowl was to scrumptious and very filling.
Service was ok. Although it wasn’t their fault. The waitress was very attentive and apologetic as it appeared they were short staffed.
We would go back there again as the food was very good.
Lovely food beer and staff. The mussels were great.
Once again we absolutely loved our experience here. The staff are so friendly and helpful. The kids had the amazing waffles and we had moules et frites and Bier obviously. We will definitely be back😊
The best schnitzel ever - so buttery and more-ish!
Food was delicious and great selection of drinks
Pleasantly surprised on the decor and lovely atmosphere.
Superb service and delicious food not to mention the beer!
First time and won’t be the last, really good selection of beers so nice in these days of trendy lagers, food choices limited but good and tasty. Would recommend especially to beer lovers,
Fantastic little venue, great food, great atmosphere, amazing choice of beer and excellent staff. Would definitely recommend and would definitely return
