Beso Spanish Tapas and Wine Bar Ratings and Reviews
We stopped by for Happy Hour on our way to the theatre. The place was relatively empty, but that did not last long. The food was delicious, creative, and nicely plated. We ordered 3 tapas items off of the Happy Hour menu, the House Wine (Malbec), and a salad (roasted cumin baby carrots with yogurt —> yummy !!) off of the main menu. We would reorder ALL of them, including the wine !!! But then we had desert, and I think Beso created a new food good group —> “Torija” Camarlized Spanish Toast with vanilla Ice Cream = Fabulous !!!!
The food was delicious, the service was fantastic. I personally love when you go for dinner and the servers don’t bother you 100 times asking you “is everything ok” The made sure everything was perfect and our glass never went dry. They really had the perfect balance. Will definitely be back
We've been to this restaurant 3 times. This review is based on dinner on Christmas Day...so the place was slammed with people.
Our host greeted us immediately and was spectacularly charming. But we were marked as a "No show" by OpenTable despite me
saying we had an opentable reservation.
Not one, but two appetizers were presented before our glasses of wine arrived, despite the wine
being our first order. When the 2nd appetizer appeared, I insisted that we be finally served our wine. Our server was apologetic about the mishap and on point for the remainder of our meal.
We felt rushed by the waitstaff throughout our meal so that the restaurant could accommodate the 2nd seating. The staff kept trying to take our plates away when we weren't finished with our food. We finished our entire meal in 65 minutes, starting from when we entered the restaurant to the bill payment. Next time, please back off and let us savor the food.
The scallop crudo is both beautiful to the eyes and to the palate. Just enough olive oil so one can truly taste the scallop. The endive salad on the other hand was abysmally skimpy and lacking flavor. Just bland. A few leaves of chopped endives with a sprinkle of olive oil, a few specks of cheese and nuts...and only one anchovy on top! So not worth the price. Just avoid it.
However, please, please, please, order the seafood paella! Every mussel, clam, shrimp was perfectly cooked...so soft and tender, flavorful. The arborio rice was heavy with olive oil and salt, perhaps too much, but it was welcomed after the blandness of the endive salad. The quantity serves 2 abundantly so only one appetizer would have been better.
Do go when it's not so busy, and if you happen to be in the neighborhood. It's a wonderful neighborhood gem. Don't go on a holiday when it's a full house. Prepare to pay a big dinner tab; might be better for happy hour.
I feel terrible because I can't remember my server's name or the host's name... but they were amazing. Super welcoming and informative, really warm dispositions. I went on Christmas night with my boyfriend who's from out of town... and I always get a little nervous to go out on a holiday. I've worked in the industry before and I know it can really, really suck. We felt so welcome and not like a burden at all.
The food was freaking great- I was a little nervous because of a few not so great reviews on Yelp, but I'm glad we went anyway. Seriously- whoever posted those negative reviews must have just been having a bad day because Beso is superb. Not super pricey, yet the food was impeccable and the service was top notch. I'll definitely be coming back.
The food was mediocre, waiter brought us cold stale bread to start. The beet salad was under seasoned, just tasted like steamed beets with a litttle frisee. Mushroom Croquettes were tasty though. Grilled octopus was salty and tough. If you want a great Spanish tapas place go to Picaro on 15th, this place was disappointing. Music was way too loud.
We shared tapas, paella and sangria. The food was excellent. Nick's chef is always outstanding with his choice of produce. We love to go to Bisou, his French restaurant and love Beso even more for a friends get-together . The paella con pescado was delicious. For the tapas, we had patatas bravas, spinach with pine nuts, mushroom croquetas, garlic shrimps, some specials of the day, chorizo - everything was very tasty.
Sangria was terrible. There was 2-3 very small pieces (1.2”) of fruit in the whole thing. No ice! Red wine had no sweetness at all. Bad.
The 2 tapas choices were expensive and portions small. Had a seafood paella. Looked like the seafood was placed on top after the rice was cooked in the paella pan.
Totall for this was 114.00 plus tip. Overrated and overcharged. Typical in gay located restaurants in the Castro district. Never again.
When I look at the Beso menu, I usually react that the prices are pretty good. But then realize that most of these are small plates and you need to order a lot. Food was very good. I wish they would bring the paella at the middle of dinner instead of the end. For 4 people, we ended up spending quite a bit, but had a fun time.
The food was fantastic... very creative and well-prepared. I loved the cozy, yet lively neighborhood atmosphere. The door was open so we could people-watch while we ate (Sat night in the Castro is the best entertainment!). Given that it was a busy Saturday night, I think the servers were stretched a little thin. There were very polite and accommodating, just a bit distracted. I would definitely go back.
Walked in early on a Wednesday night for a 9:30PM reservation. Because I was told the kitchen would be closing a little before their close time of 10:00PM, I went ahead and ordered before my friend arrived. Before 10:00PM, our bill was dropped on the table. We were later told they'd be closing soon--odd, given they accept reservations for 9:30PM. We got a further two reminders before someone offered to box up our food and all but ushered us out at 10:25PM.
15-20 minutes after the last dish from the kitchen goes out you lock your doors? I don't think so.
Rudeness abound but aside, the croquettes were hard as a rock (microwaved), the octopus was undercooked, and the mountains of dry tuna on crostinis were absurdly inedible.
The next time I'm in the area and want Spanish food I'll just stop wanting Spanish food.
When we arrived me for our reservation for 6 ppl the host apologized that the previous table was still finishing up and asked us to wait by the bar. Not even 5 minutes later he came back with a glass of sparkling rose for each of us on the house! We waited maybe 15 minutes total after our reservation time...what amazing service!
the front desk or front greeter needs to have basic greeting behavior. when we showed up for our dinner reservation , he didn't bother to smile, or even say hi. he had a blunt , flat and uncheerful attitude. he took us to our seat without any eye contact or anything else nice to say. other than that the other waiters were attentive and nice. food was awesome!
Came here for my birthday dinner & could not be more pleased. We were promptly seated at our reservation time and service after that point was on par but not overbearing. Every dish was hot and delicious including many vegetarian options. Prices tend to be on the higher side but worth every penny. Fantastic wine list as well!
