Bertrand at Mister A's Ratings and Reviews
The evening was wonderful in every way. The Valentine’s prix five dinner was sumptuous. The choices were exquisite and our plates were delicious. The service could not have been more attentive. The drinks were as ordered. And, of course, the view is the best in the city.
On Valentine's Day I chose Mr As for the special occasion. We were 15 minutes late due to terrible traffic. They were very accommodating. The atmosphere was good, but busy. Service was great. The food was very good, but I think it was not representative due to the holiday and the amount of people there. All in all, I'd say A-
First visit - From the lobby hostesses to the wait staff and servers, all have welcoming smiles.
Our waiter Thomas was very knowledgeable, accommodating and friendly.
The one complaint I have is our table for two was positioned so my wife faced the beautiful city view while my back was to the view.
Arrived early for our evening, as we wanted to watch the view of downtown San Diego change from Day through in to to Evening. We were not disappointed, the views are wonderful. We sat at the bar gazing out of the windows towards the harbor and airport. Once sunset had passed we sat down for our meals.
My wife and I ordered foie gras for our appetizers, the taste was just ok, but could have done with a little more sear on both sides, i'm talking of just another 15 seconds per side here, my wife was a little disappointed with the lack of flavor. This could have turned a reasonably good appetizer into a really great one.
We then followed this with a waldorf salad , this was really fresh and well made, all the ingredients were very crisp, Overall a really well made salad along with a good portion size.
I ordered the Steak, with sides of Brussles and Carrots, this was a great hit with me, really spot on with the temperature, the sauce was amazing, the two sides were wonderful - this was a great 10/10 dish.
My wife ordered the Maine Lobster, which was poached and supposedly finished in butter, This dish was bad, not just a little either the lobster in my opinion was over cooked ( a little tough) and had zero flavor and certainly no butter, it seemed to have been over poached and then served. My wife also ordered the Truffle Mac n Cheese, this was also returned as at the bottom of the dish it was very watery, they replaced the Mac n Cheese within 5 mins and the second one was really good and so much better than the first.
We were asked if we wanted the chef to re-make the lobster dish, however as we all know, I would have finished my meal and then left my wife eating alone once the replacement dish arrived. So my wife decided not to have it replaced, The wait staff did sincerely apologize
Overall we have a good night, my meal was superb, however we left were disappointed with the lobster and foie gras. An expensive night ended in disappointment for my wife.
Usually our evenings at Mr A’s have been lovely, quiet, seated in a reasonable time (although seldom at the time reserved), with excellent, attentive service. This visit was an exception. We were seated more than 35 minutes after our reservation time. The table had a lovely view, but we were seated next to a table of loud businessmen in a festive mood. My husband has hearing aids and he was not able to adjust them to the noise for conversation at our table.
In addition, our server was very busy and didn’t seem to have the time for the usually excellent service. Our wine arrived well after our first course. My scallops weren’t to my taste, but I wasn’t asked why I didn’t eat them and the server was too busy to check after an initial inquiry.
Yes, I should have asked for a different table and searched out the server for a different dinner option, but that hasn’t been the kind of service I expect from Mr A’s
I ordered the lobster assuming that it was New England lobster as it did not specify on the menu. It was Caribbean lobster and it was flavorless. The waiter apologized and said the chef should have specified that on the menu. They didn’t even offer us anything to compensate such as a free dessert or anything. Very disappointing experience considering how much we paid.
It would be nice to enforce a rule on cellphones in the dining room. We went to celebrate our 50th anniversary and a party of 2 came, one of whom began talking loudly on his cellphone. My husband had to turn around to ask him polightly to keep his voice down. He did hang up but continued to speak loudly. Kind of spoiled our $250 dinner.
The preeminent restaurant in San Diego. Outstanding food and exceptional service. Bertrand Hug has everything going at his place. If you’re there for lunch, ask for Jerry. Lunch at one of his tables is always great fun and the service he and his team provides is impeccable. The reataurant’s manager, Ryan, is the best in the city - a real gentleman who ensures the experience is always the best.
Took my boyfriend there for his birthday, just the 2 of us. Made reservations for the patio. The weather was perfect, not cold but you get a little bit of breeze. Beautiful view of downtown, the food was tasty. The price was reasonable, expected. We also had dessert, their chocolate royale (can't remember the name) but it was amazing!!! It was a chocolate mouse cake and it wasn't too much, loved every bit of it. Service was awesome. It's a good place to go if you want somewhere romantic and relaxing.
Absolutely loved the view during dinner. Everyone was so pleasant and the food was delicious! each dish had its own flavor and complimented each other. The noise level was a little loud since we were seated next to a group of 11 people, but my husband and I enjoyed our anniversary dinner.
I have always wanted to try this place and I have to say that I was very pleased with the service, food, and overall experience. I came here for Restaurant Week 2018. And I was able to sit outside. It was a perfect night no clouds or fog, the weather was perfect.
For the appetizers, I had the salad with the pears and walnuts to be honest the salad was okay a bit under seasoned. My friend had the mussels which was very tasty I would order those again.
For dinner, I had the beef duo with the short rib and I believe it was veal, with sweet potato gnocchi. It was very tender very flavorful. My friend had the salmon with risotto I tried a bit of it and that was very good as well both the salmon and risotto were cooked perfectly.
For dessert, I had the passion fruit pavlova which was probably the best dessert that I have had in a long while. My friend had the marble cheesecake which was light and not overly sweet which was perfect.
