Bertrand at Mister A's Ratings and Reviews
We were looking so forward to dining at Mr. A's; been there a dozen times. This time it was toxic from bad service and grumpy employees (except for the Matre'D--good guy). Server didn't look at us once; did not welcome us; brought her moody demeanor to our every bite; her colleague server replaced our silverware by throwing them on the table (spoon and fork both thrown on the right side of the plate about a foot away from my plate); steaks were good; don't order the Paella; probably frozen and heated up. After we suffered through the night, we asked the bar tender to take our picture with the beautiful background of the city; he grumpily picked up our camera; didn't say one word; took a picture of our group after and then managed to hold the photo button down so I ended up with a dozen of the same picture; will be a very long time before we return; BTW, our bill was $649.09; can't figure out why they were uninterested in our patronage; bad management?
A birthday dinner for 4 and we were seated at the worst table even though at 5:15 the restaurant was almost empty. We were seated at a very uncomfortable half both/half chairs table. Right next to the every revolving patio door. The waiter was mediocre at best when he made a rare appearance and the vegan eggplant parmesan entree maybe equaled a 1/2 cup of food. The unexplained 4% surcharge was just the end to a very disappointing meal. We have dined at Mr. As over a dozen times. This was the last.
We celebrated our anniversary here and it was excellent. Our waiter Mark was super -- he was personable and provided us with excellent service. We sat inside at a window facing downtown. We were able to see the sunset as well as see planes land at the airport. (we got to see the British Airways 747 land shortly after we arrived -- and they all knew about it) Mac and cheese was fantastic. Drinks were incredible. Truffle fries were very good. The meat duo was good. The filet was amazing. The short rib was decent but not as good as other places. We had beignets for dessert and they were good too. The staff was patient with us and we were never in a rush. The prices are high and I was surprised they add a 4% surcharge there. (it is common with some lower end restaurants here to cover the minimum wage law changes -- but not common for higher end places that I've been to) But it was advertised ahead of time so I knew it would come. I would return for another special occasion for sure. It's pricey but the view, ambiance and service were outstanding.
It has been a few years since we ate here - we were pleased to find that the quality of the restaurant was still excellent. Tables are elegant and virtually every table has a spectacular view of the city. We arrived early and sat at the bar fora few minutes - cocktails were first class and well executed; my wife tried a drink off the menu “dreams of Green” and i had an old standby - Manhattan - both were delicious. we were seated at our reservation time. Service was outstanding - Wendy and a group of attendants took care of us- they were engaged and attentive without being intrusive; very professional.
Food was outstanding; consistent excellent quality; served hot or cold as appropriate, both of us were served simultaneously, beautiful presentation and healthy portions of beautiful food. We had fois gras, steak tartare, duck and lamb. an apple tart for dessert. We had an excellent bottle of Cabernet which did not break the bank. I appreciate the fact that their wine list includes a number of options in the 30 to 70 dollar range, in addition to many more expensive wines. And they also sell high quality wines by the glass.
This is a special restaurant. it has a unique history and location. It continues to live up to its reputation for fine service and food - as a matter of fact I think it is better today than it was several years ago. It is not inexpensive. People should not come here expecting to save money - having said that, it is an excellent value, as the portions are relatively generous, the food delicious, and the service outstanding. You can easily spend this much at other SD area restaurants and receive a lot less.
The food and ambiance were amazing. We enjoyed the tartare appetizer. It was tender and delicious. I would have enjoyed a little wedge of lemon but otherwise it was perfection. Definitely take time to enjoy a burnt orange old fashioned. The real star of the evening was the scallops. They melt in your mouth and tasted divine. We also ordered the seafood paella which was tasty but pales in comparison to the scallops. The view is incredible and romantic. Top notch and I hope to go again.
I wish I could love this place but the only thing I love about it is the view which we had requested for a window table but didn’t get it. We were celebrating my parents anniversary and we wanted to treat them to the immaculate view and food. But food was pretty disappointing. My husband and I gave it a second chance and we were disappointed with the food both times.
The menu for Christmas eve was too precious. They should have been a chicken dish as well. I like Mr. A's but I felt like the main course did not have anything that I really wanted. The beef wellington had no control over how well done the beef would be, and I like steak, but not prime rib, the sea bass was so-so over vegetables and I don't even remember the other choices. I would have been happy with an exotic plate of roasted vegetables, chicken of some type, or another fish choice. So, for 87 dollars, I feel like it wasn't a great value. Also, the bread is really tough. The atmosphere and view are great though.
Our regular foursome decided to celebrate with lunch at Bertrand at Mr. A's! We hadn't visited in years and found it to be a delightful surprise. The food was excellent--the three of us who had some form of salmon really enjoyed it, and service was attentive and unobtrusive. We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day and the view was outstanding. Will definitely return!
I have been to Bertrand at Mr. A's many times in the past being a theater goer in San Diego. For the holidays, I wanted to take some friends for their holiday decoration ambience and to celebrate a dear friends birthday. We did have a good time and the place looked fantastic. The service was top rate and really made us feel comfortable. Unfortunately the experience did hit a few road-bumps throughout the evening.
My first comment is that the value of our experience was poor. The balance of the menu as it relates to portion size left me feeling uneasy. Some appetizers were a good size, others were very small. The entrees were even worse in this regard. The steak duo entrée was like 4 ounces while other entrees like the swordfish special was a regular sized portion. Nothing makes your guests more uneasy that having to share their food because half of your party ended up with small dishes by chance. This was not reflected in the dish pricing at all either. It was strange and make me feel uneasy. It was almost like someone was trying to cash in on the holiday crowd. What a shame.
The other blaring thing my party noticed and commented on was that our appetizers were larger than our entrees. This was also a bit embarrassing for me as the host. Overall the food was excellent and as I expected. Thank God for that at least. I remember one of my party saying," yes it is very small but it does taste great".
My last comment is that I entered on my OpenTable reservation that this was a birthday celebration as I know Mr. A's does it right and makes folks feel special. However this time, no mention of the birthday in any way shape or form. I was upset but couldn't say anything in front of my guests.
I am chalking this up to an off night for the restaurant. They are usually much better so I would not shy away from going. The view is great and the meal is usually one you can brag about afterwards. This however was not one of those times.
The food and the service was good. There were 8 of us celebrating 39 years of friendship. Staff sent out a plate with 3 chocolates! I was offended by the 4% surcharge on top of the 18% gratuity. I would think our $1,000+ dinner tab would be enough! Will not be celebrating our 40th there! And frankly, I won't go back. Could you have spared 5 more chocolates???
By far the best restaurant I’ve ever been too. The service is unmatched with very welcoming servers that didn’t make us fell uncomfortable but made us feel welcomed and valued. The food was amazing and the drinks as well and the view is breathtaking. Nothing but positives in this restaurant.
This was a special treat but very worth it. The attention by the staff was excellent. The booth seat we had was very comfortable. The food was delicious and so were the drinks, even the "no proof" ones. We sat inside but were able to go outside to take pictures in the lounge area.
