Bertrand at Mister A's Ratings and Reviews
Restaurant week at Mr. A's was a good experience. Despite the fact that we are two old ladies, we were escorted, at the reservation time, to a window table with a view. The service throughout dinner was courteous and prompt, without being rushed. The bread and butter--unsalted topped by grey salt--were delicious. So was the sea scallop risotto with corn and asparagus. The lobster bisque--with foam (love those 90s)--meh. The pork belly was very good, and so was the seafood with pasta plate. Great idea to have two wine pairings for $17.50 each with the $40 menu, but the pours were excessively small. We were so full after the entrees that we took the desserts home. Nostalgia: my first visit to Mr. A's was about 45 years ago.
Aside from they kinda forgot our first round of wines with the appetizers (which our appetizers are almost gone when they remwmbered), the dining experience was great! Though were put at the back side of the patio, still enjoyed the spectacular view of SanDiego! Overall, i love the food! the pork belly as entree and the chocolate mousse was to die for!
We were seated outside at a table overlooking the beautiful San Diego Skyline. It was right in the landing path of San Diego International Airport, which was truly enjoyable watching. Due to Restaurant week in San Diego the menu was limited. I wanted to try the lobster bisque, vegetable lasagna & mousse bar & my hubby ordered the mac-n-chees, rib eye & short rib & apple dessert(not pear as indicated in online menu). We both are not big eaters so the small portions were not a problem the lobster bisque & mac-n-cheese were delish but the vegie lasgna consisted of green beans & brussel sprouts covered with what looked like crepe, covered with a little pesto sauce, it was very bland and dissapointing. My husbands rib eye & short ribs were good.
This is a popular choice during Restaurant Week, which was when we went. It appeared that their menu had more selection this time than previous Restaurant Week menus. The restaurant was inevitably slammed during this week, and this time we were unable to sit on the 'nicer' side [note: the decision of which table we were given was akin to upgrading to first class on a plane if you know what I mean]. A 20% gratuity was already added, but the value for the food was good.
A solid average lunch, which unfortunately is a little below what we expected. Admittedly it was during restaurant week so the prix fixe menu might not have done justice to the normal but other than the view it is not on the list to do again. Save it for something special and depend on the view to carry the event.
1. I was glad for a view table. 2. The prix fixe menu seems to be the same. 3. I felt rushed in that the server cleared away the table without asking us if we were still eating the bread. (I do that atd the end to keep down the carbs.) 4. They took too long to ask us if we wanted coffee, so we had to leave.
Apparently they always have lunch specials but Restaurant Week was a good reason to try Mr. As for lunch. It was a beautiful day, and service was impeccable! Celebrated a birthday and they did a lovely job of making us feel special. Food was good, but not great. Overall, we really enjoyed ourselves.
Bertrand at Mister A's is a beautiful restaurant, with a sweeping view of the city. We visited while on our honeymoon, and the staff was wonderful, setting us at a beautiful table with an amazing view. The wine list and cocktails were outstanding and the decor was fresh, neither too stuffy not relaxed. We had a wonderful meal and desert, expertly prepared. It was a great experience.
Unfortunately we got one of the worst tables (view-wise) and was my first time there. First impressions are hard to change.
The chef was not as his best. The reviews and comments I receive from peers, friends and others did not met my expectations. Maybe restaurant week is not the best time to go but chef must always be the best regardless of the restaurant week or not.
View was mesmerizing, especially with the fireworks. Service was impeccable, food was great with one exception. I had the Duo of rib-eye and braised short rib with the wine reduction sauce. The sauce was too tangy. It overpowered the meat. I was surprised I was not asked how I wanted my meat cooked. The short rib was buttery and melted in your mouth. As for the accompaniments, I didn't understand the cauliflower with mayo? Yuck! The desserts we had were yummy, albeit looked a little small on the large plates. Oh last but not least, the amuse bouche of watermelon "chilled soup" and the mac and cheese and escargot and watermelon/mint soda were the best parts with dessert, of course!
I have been here three times now, twice for lunch and once for late night drinks at the bar. Every time I have been here the service is awesome! The food for lunch is reasonably priced and very tasty. If you go for lunch and sit outside I recommend wearing sunscreen.
This was our first time to Bertrand at Mr. A's. We had a party of 4, but 2 of us showed up 20mins early for our reservations. They graciously found us an available table by the windows on the west side and sat us immediately while we waited for the others in our party. The view was spectacular! It was resaurant week and the food was excellent! We appreciated the vegetarian choices and my boyfriend said the veggie lasagne was the best he's ever had! The service was very attentive. We are very pleased with the restaurant and look forward to the next time we visit!
Best part of the Restaurant Week meal was the view. Great views of the planes and San Diego Bay.
Food was mediocre at best. You can tell it was pre-made and sitting for a while. I was disappointing with the scallop risotto, the fish, and the desserts.
Will never come back here again for the food.
Service is attentive, but pretentious. They seem very snobby and not at all warm or welcoming.
I took my now-fiance here after we got engaged. The staff made us feel so incredibly special - the host kept whispering to everyone, "they just got engaged, they just got as engaged," as he walked us to our table. It was just enough attention for my new fiance - she absolutely loved it! Beyond that, the food was delicious, the view was amazing, and they brought us a "Congratulations" desert at the end of our meal, 100% unsolicited. I'd recommend Bertrand at Mister A's not only for your special occasion, but really anytime you want to splurge and have an amazing view with an equally amazing meal. I just wish we lived in San Diego so we could go again...it really was such a great find, and I highly recommend it.
We took friends for their 25th wedding anniversary. What a perfect evening it was. When we arrived we had drinks outside and the view was just magnificent. When we went in for dinner the flowers I had ordered were on the table and were lovely. The table also had a great view.
We went full bore and had appetizers, entree, desert and coffee. Everything we had was wonderful and the food so was delicious. I also loved the service in that it was excellent, but we never felt rushed.
All in all it was a wonderful and special evening.
Bertrand at Mister A's is the best of fine dining in San Diego. It combines an amazing view with top-notch food and service, which is rare. Since it's not in the Gaslamp it's not beholden to the tourist set, so you can actually plan for a nice night out without someone in a baseball jersey and flip-flops at the next table over.
So dress up, and have a ball.
We were visiting San Diego and heard from a past resident that Mister A's was a great place for dining. Saturday was a great day spent at Coronado but also a horrible day because of bike rental problems, ferry schedule misinformation, and stolen sun glasses. When we finally arrived at Mister A's and met our waiter, he made us feel very welcomed. His suggestions for wine and food pairings were impeccable. He was a delight and we had a wonderful evening and all the problems we had during the day melted away. We had a very relaxed and enjoyable evening.
First rate from beginning to end. Even though it was our first time there, we were treated like old friends. Greeting was warm and personal, table service team was very professional and very personable, food was excellent and view outstanding. We had a truly great dining experience.
Bertrand at Mr. A's continues to be the best there is in San Diego. The location is spectacular overlooking downtown and the bay from a height that allows you to watch the planes coming in for landing from above. The food is wonderful, creative, fun and fresh. Wines are excellent. Service could not be better. A truly great restaurant.
Everything was PERFECT! I took a client for a celebration. They accomodated every need and desire. The food and service were amazing. Don't miss the Mac and cheese, I can still taste it! Spectacular views! Great spot for a romantic evening. It is pretty expensive (lunch for 2 cost over $100) but totally worth it for the right occasion.
